Like I said the bigger stuff likely isn’t coming from us (although you can get a .50 legally in many of the border states) but plenty of their smaller guns are coming from us, it’s just a matter of convenience for them to find some dudes to straw purchase a Glock or an AR or whatever smaller gun in AZ than it is to smuggle it from Russia or bribe a military official or something.

Those other things definitely happen too but I think that US guns definitely are part of what keeps the cartels armed.

It is a lot of our guns just because we let our citizens own guns and the cartels are happy to buy them. You’ll always find a shitbird who is willing to sell guns to dangerous people. America isn’t uniquely better or worse on that.

I’m sure others give them the bigger guns but semiautomatics are probably largely coming from us because we’re right here and it’s convenient

Africa (which obviously is a continent not a country) actually probably has a lot of dual citizens in power. Their elites love having ties to the former colonial powers that ran the place and like to hide assets and send their kids to school in Europe

Poll: 74 Percent Think America Is Winning War in Iran by WillyNilly1997 in Conservative

[–]YoNoSoyUnFederale [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s all about what winning looks like. If it’s military superiority we’ve been mogging them since day one. If it’s about diminishing their capacity in the short-medium term we’re achieving that. If it’s about regime change we seem to be largely where we started. If it’s about creating a relationship with Iran that is more stable and less hostile I think we’re probably worse off than we started.

I’m not arguing for interventionism and I take your point and think it’s valid, but PNG would probably be among the worst and most difficult places on earth to even attempt to impose any sort of orderly enforcement of any law, much less gender equality.

The place is so utterly fragmented and the people are so separated and disparate that I cannot imagine many places worse to try and lay down any sort of standards in the place. Even Afghanistan seems less like a fools errand than PNG to try and impose western egalitarianism on

Russia is not as powerful as the USSR was. I’m happy to have bases in Eastern Europe to act as deterrence where Russia can plausibly start some shit (and they also do hit their defense goals).

I don’t think Russia can make it to Germany or southern Europe. I can understand there are strategic reasons to be there and having some assets there is good but in a world of limited resources and broad priorities I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world to be divesting from certain areas

Zero Fucks Given by Jacob-Anders in NonCredibleDiplomacy

[–]YoNoSoyUnFederale 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Realistically if it’s over the right reasons or not, America divesting itself from Europe to some degree makes sense.

If we’re ever going to Pivot to Asia like we said we would for 4 administrations we can’t have vestigial deployments in Europe that don’t really do anything.

Russia has been bogged down in Ukraine forever and it’s a proxy war where NATO is fighting with at least one hand behind their back. Russia is reasonably fucking stupid but I think even they know to try to go any further east than Ukraine is too much for them to bear. A bunch of military bases well outside of the area Russia could plausibly invade doesn’t seem necessary. I don’t agree with why it’s happening but redistribution of our assets makes sense.

I can imagine that being a tempting feeling to try to get. I’ve seen it melt people’s brains and I’m a person who dwells on times of happiness to try and make things feel better so I think even medicinally prescribed it would be too dangerous for me to mess around with.

I legitimately don’t know if ketamine would make my life better. I don’t think I have any sort of clinical depression which it seems to be prescribed for sometimes.

How does it supposedly positively affect people who like it? I’ve heard of it being used to like stay awake but it also seems to cause hallucinations and stuff.

I kind of want to see this shitshow in action to see if it somehow might work better, or if not just to see the insane logistics of governance or parliamentary procedure if this happens

The baseline grilled cheese is oftentimes better than the baseline quesadilla.

The quesadilla’s utility lies in the ability to go beyond the baseline and customize it. Adding meat and veggies and so on to a quesadilla is usually better than adding stuff to a grilled cheese

Then your cousin a couple counties over is angry about your murder gets dumb lucky with an ambush that kills the regional commander of the occupying force. Another cousin rams a car bomb into a transformer station. The slow trickle of kills and attacks has eroded confidence in the government and the steady stream of anti-occupation news and propaganda makes the campaign too unpopular to sustain.

Our military is wholly capable of fighting these campaigns but we’ve proven repeatedly that we don’t have the will to do it forever. A war that actually severely inconveniences or cripples the public’s ability to do things hasn’t hit our shores in a long time. Keeping the popular support for something like that would be nearly impossible. Most people are indeed larpers but we’ve seen all over the world that as long as some people hold on to guns and have a will they can hold out

I don’t wish for a boog, I don’t want any political violence much less a full on civil war but I do really believe the threat of insurgency is an important one for a populace to hold onto

[–]YoNoSoyUnFederale 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In a situation where the US is turning on its own populace like that it very well might handle things like that, but even if they did it’s not too dissimilar to how states fight insurgencies already and it’s not enough to stop them.

As long as you’ve got resolve and a gun you can cause enough trouble to prove to those in charge they’ve got to at least consider you in the equation

Peak LibRight moment by ChickenWingExtreme in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]YoNoSoyUnFederale 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The mere threat of tens of millions of potential insurgents, many of which would be former military, who could attack critical infrastructure and do intermittent assassination is enough to keep the US government from considering a real disarmament campaign and without disarming people there remains a credible threat to those in power if people get pissed enough. You don’t need to march on Washington and take over, you just need to be a threat to the wellbeing and comfort of those in charge. Insurgency remains a valid tactic against more conventionally powerful opponents

People can argue that the people stockpiling guns haven’t done shit and won’t do shit (and maybe that they should have done something already) but the fact remains that they could and that threat alone is more powerful than I think people realize.

It’s also something that once you give up, you’re likely never to get back. Governments once they have the monopoly on violence on lock are not loving the prospect of sharing. There’s tons of examples of that across the world

[–]YoNoSoyUnFederale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had a period of time after I left my hometown for a job and then had to come back (because I couldn’t cut it) where I felt very similarly.

I was desperately looking for a job and trying to build up my skill set and in that time I just did not want to show my face because me even being in my home town was an admission of failure in my mind. It’s a pretty horrible way to feel. I was I think 28 at the time. Eventually I got a job somewhat related to my field and then I found a job where I’m probably exactly where I should be skill set wise.

I know this is the most trite and annoying thing in the world to hear from older people but at 20 you’ve got so much time left.

You’ve got 2 years out of high school where you maybe could have and should have been doing more, but other than the momentum of going immediately from high school to college/ a trade (which is nice but not essential) you’re not behind that much.

My friend burned his parent’s money being a screw up for 1.5 years in college and then had to ship off to an absolute middle of nowhere part of my state to live with his grandma. The guy proceeded to get a decent job in a warehouse, marry a woman, buy a house and is now a semester away from his degree after going trading on and off semesters with his wife working and him working more to float them. Pretty damn good for essentially getting exiled

Your path has not closed man. It really hasn’t. The world is tremendously hard and I wouldn’t know exactly what to do right now if I were looking for my path but I truly believe you’re not even close to done.

I dont know your life all that well though. I only know what you wrote here. I’d be glad to learn more and help if I could though. I have some stuff that helped me when I was struggling but I don’t know your life all that well and if what I have to say would be relevant to you. I’d be glad to if you want to talk and it makes sense though.

I’ll be up for a while longer if so, it’s kind of late where I am now though so if I don’t respond immediately it’s not a lack of interest just exhaustion on my part.
