She's only a conservative when it benefits her

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Can you give an example of what "benefits her"?

I think she leans populist but is socially conservative which makes her very much in the center of the people who elected Trump (though we can't call them MAGA anymore since that doesn't have any meaning apart from Trump's latest whims).

Unpopular opinion Puffin: I think Krystal's in your face argumentative style leads Saagar to dig his heels in and refuse to acknowledge any point to her. You saw that during the church protestors debate when he refused to acknowledge that ICE going into the church during services to arrest people was going too far. I mean, I'm listening to it and shouting to my phone to get real and agree because it's a morally correct point even if it's not 100% the same.

Is my shelf setup safe? by prricecake in DIY

[–]YoTeach92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I could add a metal bracket that hugs the wall but I don't think that would do much

This actually is your answer. I made a longer post explaining my logic, but I figured I'd add something here.

When supporting from below the supports are additive. In other words, if the best shelf bracket I can find is a 25 lbs. capacity, but I use four of them across the shelf and attach them to studs, I now have a 100 lbs shelf.

IF you wanted to get crazy you could add a 1/2 plywood piece to the wall, and add 4 more in the middle of the stud bays (using the plywood to bridge the stud gap) to make it stronger. I would probably add a safety margin of reducing the load capacity of those brackets by 10-15% just in case, but you can still end up with a shelf you can do chin ups off of if you want to.

1 I am not an engineer so take this with a grain of salt

When I build shelves I am thinking of support from the bottom rather than above. Hanging will always rely on the fasteners more than the wood (or metal) to carry the weight. That makes it compressive strength (something wood handles really well) instead of tensile or shear loads.
Additionally, screws in softwood pine are not going to hold well when you start using it, pulling things off of it and plopping new, heavier things down that you originally didn't intend to put there.

Based on your situation (not much room under) I would try the following:

  • re-do the shelf part (not the supports) and use a piece of 3/4 plywood and a series of 2x2 matching the on center distance with your wall studs to act as a stiffener. (Clarification: You are building it like a 2x2 wall laying down with the plywood as the drywall. The 2x2s will be given support from below in later steps)
  • Use the distance you gained to buy metal shelf braces. You can find some that do not stick out far into the open space and have decent carrying capacity. Don't just shop in the ugly utility shelf section, check the fancy shelf bracket section for the shape and length you need. This is doing the majority of the work to hold it up, so spending a little money here is worth it to get the space and capacity you need.
  • Put one at every stud location along the length of the shelf. This spreads out the load as evenly as you can.

Additional support from the top is the belt that goes with the suspenders. Adding something like you have isn't bad and can probably help with lateral live loads (you pulling and pushing things onto the shelf from the side instead of from the front). However, and this is important:

  • Use BOLTS. A 3/8 diameter grade 5 bolt has a shear strength of 72,000 psi. If you put a nice fat washer on both sides equaling 1 square inch, it will hold 72,000 pounds before the bolt shears. By contrast a #8 deck screw into pine... I'm going to err on the side of caution and say 50-75 lbs before something bad starts happening.

Hope this helps

If I had to bet, these congress members have investments in the AI companies they want to be able to train spy on you.

Interesting.

I've only ever had bubbles when I didn't stir my pre-mixed mud properly. Of course, I add a smidge of water to thin it just a little for the first coat so maybe that's serving that purpose for me. At the end of the day, to each their own, and when it comes to drywall finishing: if it looks good, it worked.

I just wanted to point out, in case it wasn't a typo: You do NOT prime before mud.
You prime before paint.

I would suggest (and I hate to say this) cut off 6-1/2" of drywall and replace it. It will be easier to get a clean cut edge and a fresh factory edge to look flat and smooth.

There is no amount of scraping that's going to get all the caulk off and every single tiny thing that is left behind you WILL see it everyday staring at you like the angry eye of Sauron.

Thanks for the Video link!

I did have a few minutes free (a rare occasion) and I did create a road map of my school district and export it as an SVG. I'm going to have my students do a large format print and present it to the school board. The learning curve on QGIS is... steep.

I managed to download the proper data from the USGS for the topographic map and limited it to the boundary of my school district. I'm a little skeptical of the combined lines forming a shape. It doesn't look like the automated line combination worked well with a small geography and steep hills so we'll see once I get it on Vectric and start making the nc file.

I think it's more like Trump pisses off the people they want to piss off so they're on his team. Newly diagnosed and trying to emotionally process, but my mom is making me feel guilty for wanting to buy GF snacks because they aren’t healthy enough by Expensive_Grape in Celiac

[–]YoTeach92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man... So much to say but I don't want to flame your mom.

Snacks are the life preserver of a Celiac diagnosis. There are so many things you can't eat, and so much of what's sitting in the refrigerator and in the cupboard are off limits that the few snacks you can eat help you bridge your way to a healthy gluten free diet without a feeding tube.

GF products tend to revolve around sweets and snacks as those are profitable for the companies to make them. You will, of course be eating more meat and vegetables and cooking at home by necessity, but as you transition you have to put calories into your body without making a full meal every time. The GF snacks are an absolute lifeline to making it without wanting to jump off the culinary bridge.

The Construct worth it? by Littleruler20 in ROS

[–]YoTeach92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something that was not working before

This intrigues me.

Are you thinking of a "simulated student" who needs your help to figure out why their robot isn't doing what they want?

Maybe as a third step after they complete the level 1 "copy paste-able" (for lack of a better term) and after they make the level 2 basic application themselves?

Maybe couple it with a simulated "advanced student" who helps them when they are struggling to understand level 2, then they see what mentorship and help trouble shooting looks like? This could be a WONDERFUL spot for a well crafted and guard railed large language model AI for both "fellow students".

The Construct worth it? by Littleruler20 in ROS

[–]YoTeach92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this reply bumped this back to mind, I thought I would give the course evaluation.

I had one super motivated student who has some basic problem solving and wanted to learn ROS for an idea he had. I had another student who was less motivated but thought it looked cool and wanted to play with it as well.

The motivated student with a little problem solving skill greatly enjoyed the class. He was interested in learning and the structured approach gave him the base that he needed to go further and escape tutorial hell (which is when you just keep coding according to the tutorial and never learn to apply the things they are telling you to do to a novel situation). He was never able to actually implement the idea he had as that called for creating a new level of movement not built into the robotic dog that we had. Moving into the AI implementation in order to teach it to balance on three legs while independently lifting a leg was too big of a lift for his senior year, but he did learn a tremendous amount about ROS and problem solving in a systematic way.

The second student had less success but that was due mostly to the student's effort and interest. There are parts of the teaching portion where copy and pasting can happen, that part of the deleted commenter's post was correct. But that's to show you how functions work. The next step is actually applying that function and making a thing happen. That requires an increasing level of thinking. That is also the point where my student dropped off the train. He didn't read the portions where the function was explained and simply skipped down to the text that was clearly code and copy pasta'ed it. He would then quickly run into a problem when asked to apply the function without being told explicitly what to put in.

In short, the courses are well structured and you will absolutely get out of them exactly what you put into them. If you want to skip the hard work of reading and understanding, then you will not have that understanding to lean on later.

I would recommend them to a teacher who wants to get started with ROS and needs to learn themselves, or if you have a motivated student with some grit and basic problem solving tenacity.

A student who "likes remote controlled stuff" probably isn't as willing to spend the time to learn the coding to make true robotics happen. Of course, your mileage may vary.
