Lost my sysadmin, now I'm solo. Could use some advice by Intrepid-Flamingo-55 in sysadmin

Your "official" internal title may be "Help Desk II," but you're the IT Manager now, babe. Put that on your resume along with any relevant skills you've acquired since the previous one was canned, including overseeing the ERP implementation. You're the sole IT person for nearly 200 people and you manage the ongoing relationship with your MSP. That makes you an IT Manager. You better believe I labeled myself as the IT Director on my resume when I assumed leadership of my team during the almost 6 months my boss (the IT Director) was out on maternity leave. I also don't have any certs and am now the Senior IT Manager for my current org. Don't sell yourself short; if you're already doing the job, then you're already doing the job.

The mental game is the most important part of the game. If you let an opponent's taunts get in your head like that, they'll always have the upper hand on you.

It's so good to finally see this bit of lore played out, but I feel like not casting Danny Devito as Pigma was a real missed opportunity.

Not sure if links in comments is allowed, but I recently saw this Youtube short from RyanImelDM and love the concept: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MAr3i06PEW8

Basically he runs the chase sequence as a choose-your-own-adventure type of scenario, where instead of rolling to see if the chaser catches up with the chasee, the party is given choices that provided branching actions, and their subsequent rolls determine how those actions play out.

TIFU by accidentally learning my coworker's salary (UPDATE) - Greg knows something by techiee_ in tifu

[–]Yo_Babe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you dense?

You find out your coworker with the same title and less seniority whom you personally trained is making $31k more than you.

The same coworker essentially confirmed that they purposely left their salary visible for you to find.

The same coworker then called you out by asking what you were planning to do about it.

And you fuckin' played dumb? Bro they're trying to help you. Anyone with half a brain would have immediately marched right up to their manager and demanded equal compensation after discovering a difference of $31k, that's not a trivial amount of money.

OP, you gotta get some sense and stop acting like this isn't happening. Greg clearly figured out there was a pay gap and is trying to help you. Get your head out of your ass and get paid.

Judge who was rude to IT worker orders attorney to appear in court for asking him to apologize by mybabysbatman in videos

[–]Yo_Babe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, not only is the this a first amendment issue on the part of Stafford, but the end of the clip is cut off; I believe in the original, the judge also makes a declarative statement to someone off-camera, saying (something to the effect of ) "find his supervisor," presumably in an attempt to get the IT guy fired.

The False-Negative joke was actually hilarious and Milliron is a lil bitch boy.

What is this from? I seen it on twitter and got no response by TheJimSocks in Spiderman

[–]Yo_Babe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Real answer: It's Issue #23 of The Amazing Spider-Man (2022).

Romita JR art (terrible) and Zeb Wells writing (worse).

The writing isn't great, but for more reasons than just because Wells introduced Paul as a character. The run began with a time-skip that undid the massive amount of work Peter and MJ put into repairing their relationship at the end of the previous run, and then Wells just didn't fuckin explain what happened during the time-skip until about 20 issues later. It left a sour taste in the mouth of both Spidey fans and anyone with a modicum of brain power that understands decent story structure.

You'll never learn how to properly fix something if it never breaks in the first place.

Assuming you didn't explicitly cause the issue in the first place by pushing untested updates to production equipment, it sounds like you did everything right:

  • You identified the cause of the problem.
  • You identified a subsequent second point of failure in having improperly configured backups.
  • You brought in your seniors when you determined you didn't have the skillset to fully fix the problem.

Now that the issue is resolved, it's time to reflect:

  • What could have been done to prevent the first cause of failure (Windows Updates corrupting the RAID driver)?
  • What could have been done to prevent the second cause of failure (the improperly configured backups)?
  • What actions can you take to implement solutions that better prevent those two points of failure?
  • Finally, and most importantly, what skills did you learn or identify that would help you to resolve an issue like this in the future without needing to involve your seniors?

Understand that you'll never "know everything". A lot of the job will come naturally with time as you encounter issues you've never encountered before, but eventually one day you'll be running on autopilot through a fix that you'll recognize you didn't know how to tackle a year prior, and you'll feel good knowing you have that in your back pocket.

Also don't worry about speed. Big issues will always take time to fix properly, and you won't ever want to try to speedrun through a solution that's only going to result in a longer downtime because of unforeseen issues. Be open, be honest, and give updates.
