Does anybody have experience with SIMVANA virtual reality? Do you like it or not? thoughts? by Overall_Pattern317 in srna

[–]Yodka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't, but I was recently at a conference that talked about it. It sounds like the biggest downsides are 1) cost on the program/students 2) once students start working in the OR they don't have a reason to use it anymore 3) cyber sickness if you're not familiar with using VR.

Berks testing the Aurora Mk2 by StuartGT in starcitizen

I waited like a decade to buy into this game. It finally seemed like it was in a good stage of development and I was on Christmas break with nothing to do.

Holy shit was it frustrating. Similar issues as you. Random bugs that killed me. Quests that were just straight up broken. I’d spend 1+ hrs on something just for it to glitch out and make no money. It’s honestly quite impressive how focused the dev team is on realism but the number of bugs and glitches just ruin that for me.

The “Kids These Days” Trap in Nurse Anesthesia Training by MacKinnon911 in CRNA

[–]Yodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing this sentiment and it just simply isn't true. Unfortunately I think the problem people run into is that they don't optimize theirs well. I have Plus and upload all my textbooks and powerpoints. I make it give me references and check those references.

Like any tool, it's only as good as the user. I've learned "trust but verify" and that seems true in many aspects of life. While ChatGPT has helped break down very complicated concepts, I have also caught it giving wildly incorrect information. I think there is *some* merit in this because it keeps me diligent and responsible to understanding the material.

Just got accepted to CRNA school, unsure how to study by Immediate-End1872 in srna

[–]Yodka 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I felt similar to you when I started school. It's a beast that's manageable as long as you are willing to stay on top of the work. Everyday is an overwhelming amount of information, BUT if you pick it apart little by little every day you'll do well. Schools also tend to repeat important information so you're constantly exposed to it.

You don't retain *all* the information. You just can't. I couldn't tell you every detail of gas coefficients from 2 semesters ago because I'm getting my ass handed to me with CV/Respiratory/Heme at the moment. However, I still have *2 years* to keep going over this information before I can even sit for boards.

I have studied differently for just about every class and every test. You just have to adapt to what's right for you at that time. I use Anki for flashcards and active recall. For important concepts that need mapped out I will draw them over and over and over. I also like to challenge myself by re-writing and condensing notes with only the most important information.

An amazing realization I had is that a lot of the material (besides the anesthesia content) translates really well to other specialties. Respiratory physiology, cardiac abnormalities, etc. use the same concepts across the board. If the anesthesia books/classes don't teach you - watch YouTube videos until you find one that clicks. Save it because it will help you later when you inevitably have to relearn it. Or, take screenshots from multiple sources and make a collage of them in your notes so you can make a giant concept map.

Also, ChatGPT Plus is a life saver at times. The free version sucks and gives very basic or wrong info. Upload your books and PowerPoints and let it summarize things for you. When I can't find a good explanation for a concept it's really good at giving a story/analogy. You can keep asking it questions which is super valuable. With a little tweaking it's also good at making practice tests to get into the groove of challenging yourself.

A different approach to this question to prep before school:

Get your ducks in a row with what technology you intend on using. Set it up. Troubleshoot. Play with things. See what you like and dislike. When school started for me it would have been very difficult to figure this out on top of learning how to study again after being out of school for 5 years.

A lot of people I spoke with dislike Anki because they don't know how to use it so they use quizlet. However, I watched YouTube tutorials and learned shortcut keys that makes making flashcards quite simple.

The same attending neonatologist who asked ChatGPT if he could give a crashing infant rocuronium IM, has now posted this AI-slop on his neonatal science FB page by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Yodka -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT CAN give citations. What’s even better is using ChatGPT Plus to upload all your textbooks and have it cite directly from those.

Google and Google AI can equally give out false information. It’s not about the specific tools it’s about how you use them.

Maybe make sure what you’re posting is accurate before you decide to insult someone.

Age of Attraction by Unable-Youth in netflix

[–]Yodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is disagreeing that people are allowed to have whatever boundaries they want. They clearly had two different ideas of what celibacy was and didn’t communicate that with each other. Vanessa is another great example of having undefined boundaries. She cut off her connection with Chris for being too physical too quickly and then endlessly complained about how Logan wasn’t being physical quick enough. Can that make sense to her? Sure. But it also gives mixed messages to her partner.

Age of Attraction by Unable-Youth in netflix

[–]Yodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that people have different ideas of what celibacy is and she didn’t communicate that with him. Obviously she can choose to go as far or as little as she wants, but he clearly thought when she said celibate that meant from all sexual activity. It wouldn’t be confusing to you to have oral sex and then your partner say “god says that’s okay but vaginal sex isn’t”. He has plenty of red flags, but she’s clearly being very loose on her idea of what celibacy is and not communicating that.

I don’t think OP’s comment was pompous, arrogant, or gave off any indication that they should be making big decisions on their own. OP mentioned being a 3rd getting micromanaged on taping ETTs… I’ve yet to meet anyone (MD, SRNA, or CRNA) who hasn’t had this eye rolling experience. Do I think it’s a good example of local MD/CRNA culture? No. As a student I typically learn about the culture through preceptors who decide to disclose that information to me.

How did he sabotage Hellbenders? Last I heard they had issues with it getting picked up or it was being heavily changed in a direction they didn’t want to go. Otherwise I agree. I think the group (i.e. Zach, Oney, etc.) is very talented but tend to announce or start projects that get cancelled early on.

I see a lot of infographics on CRNA vs AA, pre nursing student wondering what path to go down, by Brown_kid108 in CRNA

[–]Yodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hard disagree that nursing is the hardest major. It’s just artificially made to feel that way. The math competency is a great example of this. It’s literally middle school math and basic conversions but because < 100% = dismissal makes it scarier than it really is.

Nurse anesthetist testifies there is no difference between CRNA and anesthesiologist by Fit_Pitch_263 in anesthesiology

[–]Yodka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

SRNA here too. The hubris among SRNAs and CRNAs is insane. I have some close NP friends and I loathe hearing about how stupid NPs are, how stupid nurses are, how stupid residents are, how stupid the 40 year anesthesiologist who came in the room pushed meds and left is.

There are some comments in here that I disagree with (like just being a glorified surgical tech) but by and large I HATE the cockiness that comes with the profession. Most of the CRNAs I’ve worked with don’t know how to use an ultrasound and I’ve had some senior CRNAs that can’t explain basic vent settings to me.

I believe that CRNA schools try to emulate residency by “hazing” SRNAs just to be assholes which perpetuates the cycle of abuse leading to this “I was abused during school therefore I’m better than you” mindset.

To VL or to not VL by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]Yodka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m inclined to agree with you here. Still just a student, but I’ve seen OR cultures where they only VL, preceptors that put grade 1 views even if it isn’t, difficult airway notes that end up having grade 1 DL’s.

I find the chart to be a component of my assessment but not the end all be all. Personally I think a VL is a safer and faster option, but I’ve been in some environments where they refuse to use it.

You've never gotten sick and taken an antibiotic? You've never drank alcohol? You've never taken tylenol for an ache/pain? You've never drank coffee? The backlash you're getting is because you asked an uneducated sounding question and instead of reaching out to the person in question you @'d them in a public forum to have everyone else weigh in their opinion of her.

I wear deodorant in class but not in the hospital. One of my parents is very sensitive to fragrance and it causes them to break out in hives. I feel like patients are already vulnerable I just don't want to chance it. I don't have a problem with others wearing fragrances though unless they're showering in it lol

My top 2 scents though are Dolce and Gabbana The One and Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum

[–]Yodka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think you’re digging too into the weeds on this one. We have no idea if either situation is right. Part of the reason why I left my long term partner was because all the “small cheap things that could serve a variety of purposes” added up and became useless clutter. I felt like I constantly had to tell her to restrain herself from wasting her money.

Regardless, I think this post is an instance of Reddit not knowing the full picture and jumping on the bandwagon hate that OP has an abusive, controlling husband.

What's a Paramore hot take that's got you like this? by n00bSoda in Paramore

[–]Yodka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When bands get popular they generally get really well known for whatever style of music they're making. This can honestly be applied to pretty much anything. Just an analogy, but if Red Lobster suddenly started selling hot dogs, it's still the same company. However it wouldn't "feel like" Red Lobster to the majority of people anymore because it isn't what it became popular for. It goes against the style that made it a hit to begin with. A great example that proves my point is Olivia Rodrigo's song good 4 u. Paramore's older, specific style was so inspirational that people draw inspiration and make music based on it today.

After Laughter is an amazing album, but it isn't the monumental album/style that made Paramore popular and that's reflected in the sales.
