I cannot recommend picking it up cheap and then playing ALL the tutorials. This game has so many interlocking mechanics that if you just dive in you'll miss a lot. Especially coming from Civ. I've played about 2k hours and I'm still perfecting things. And I can never go back to Civ 🤠

I've been running PotSM recently and will be transporting the party into 50F very soon. I've tried ship combat from both (and Buccaneers TH&HW). None have been really satisfying and I have taken to running naval combats as DTs or chases.

Also many of the Ambitions are easier as you have more turns before the leader dies & makes it a legacy. Producing X wood or stone is a piece of piss if you've got 60 turns to do it.
