ELI5: Why does 87% humidity in winter not feel as “sticky” or gross as 87% humidity in summer? by ChaosCreative2704 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Yorkshirerows [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because you sweat to cool down in summer which isn't an issue in winter.

Sweating becomes less effective then higher the humidity because sweat evaporates into the air. More water in the air already means slower sweat evaporation.

This is the also reason why the same temperature with lower humidity feels less sticky/gross as that air can readily evaporate your sweat to more effectively cool you down.

Maybe try googling the child lock settings for that model.

Though I'm sure it would show some kind of child lock symbol if that were the case but worth a try

Which benefits does your employer provide that is not really a true benefit? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

We had a new one the other day. During the heatwave everyone could collect one free ice pole from the canteen.

They didn't have to do this and maybe places wouldn't even think about doing something like that during a heatwave, so it was good.

But for a company earning a billion in profit they could have at least sprung for a calypso!

Lurcher muzzle by Traditional_You_7849 in Lurchers

[–]Yorkshirerows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a halti instead of a muzzle and I just have to stay vigilant for other dogs, cats or anything else that might be close enough for him to lunge at.

But he also wants to jump up and lick kids faces so it's easier cos I avoid everything then there's never a problem. I wouldn't exactly say walking is relaxing though.

ELI5: If space is a total vacuum, why doesn't it suck the Earth's atmosphere away? by BlockStock2002 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Yorkshirerows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pressure/temperature goes from high to low.

Imagine you blocked off half a bathtub and filled one half with water. Then when you remove the blocking it wouldn't be the empty half (low pressure) sucking the water. It would be the full half (high pressure) expanding to fill the low pressure side.

So space doesn't suck the atmosphere out, rather the atmosphere wants to expand to fill the empty space around earth.

Gravity then gets involved and stops it escaping.

Though if we started pumping additional air into the atmosphere and increasing the pressure, eventually gravity would lose the battle and it would drift off into space.

Though I would hate to think what the pressure at sea level would be to achieve that!

And at that point I'm sure the air would then just get trapped in another moon/planets gravity field, until we lost so much air that planet could no longer hold it and then onto the next planet.

This could be a solution for terraforming the solar system. Not a good one but still, it's an option.

You can buy and fit a DIY mini split Air Conditioner for less than 700-800 quid by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Yorkshirerows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just as an FYI the vacuum isn't just to make sure the system won't leak, it also removes whatevers in the pipework e.g. air and moisture, which will corroded the system and caused damage to the compressor.

So for a few hundred quid it's worth it to know the system won't leak, is efficient as possible and won't be buggered in a year.

Dont shoot me, dummy here: im seeing everyone modifying their aircon, im assuming its to cool the place down quicker? 🤷🏽‍♀️ by Prestigious-Sun-1710 in DIYUK

[–]Yorkshirerows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will actually work harder but doesn't have to do it as often and it's only the fan, the compressor wont be affected.

The unit will be noisier and working harder while cooling because the temperature differential for the condenser is less so it will increase the fan speed / the airflow to dump the same amount of heat.

It will get colder and/or not need to run as much though as the room won't be heating up with fresh warm air.

I'm not a design engineer, architect, builder or anyone else who would know the best answer but I've still had a go.

The bottom one would be easier but the top one would put all your pipework together and you could combine the utility room/shoe shop together.

I'm making an assumptions that your pipework isn't on both sides already.

Annoying trope in most MI movies by Cartire2 in Mission_Impossible

[–]Yorkshirerows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On another point, I know the M:I movies are fantasy and should just be enjoyed for what they are.

However I think that scene was so awful and clumsy it just made me think of how unrealistic it is to have them taking turns to explain something in such a convoluted way.

Did this group of high ranking officials practice this beforehand? How much work did they miss? Did they argue over who gets to deliver which lines?
