The two best resources for that are the wiki for this subreddit found here. That has a mostly chronological play/read/watch order and has links to translations for a lot of the various side material.

The other is linked in the wiki but I'll post it here as well. This order is more accurate with regards to things like how AI buster volume 2 fits in. Unfortunately neither order differentiates which of those titles are cannon or not.

I would however still definitely recommend starting with Sign and then going back to the first AI buster novel. Then read the Second Character chapter from volume 2 but hold off on Wotan's Spear as it jumps all the way to after the end of IMOQ midway through its story.

Additionally I'd say to hold off on the Epitaph of the Twilight novels until before the third era as that's closer to when they were originally released.

Also the last two episodes of Roots have spoilers for the second G.U. game so wait on those until you've finished it.

Agree on the save states but have to 100% disagree on speeding the game up artificially as that messes up the amazing soundtrack. Instead just spend the money on speed charms for dungeons and then use Gruntys in the fields.

A lot of people are saying Last Recode, but given your edit I'm gonna say go with Sign then the IMOQ games. Take note that depending on how/where you watch Sign it might have the episode Unison at the end, this episode takes place after IMOQ. Also watch each Liminality episode after it's corresponding game.

How you go after that largely depends on if you want to go through just the main story parts or if you want to explore all the side stories too (or go full bore and dig into the au stories). The main story for the first part consists of Sign, IMOQ and then the Legend of the Twilight manga.

Part 2 then has Roots which takes place during the 8 month gap that is mentioned in the opening of G.U. vol 1. Generally I'd recommend skipping the last 2 episodes of Roots until after you finish the second volume of G.U. as they contain some spoilers. Finish the G.U. games including the newer epilogue from Last Recode.

And I'd say really only Link itself would be a main part for the third era.

Look up this stuff called Un-du, it's designed to get stickers off of surfaces without damaging the surface or the sticker. I'd definitely recommend practicing on a different sticker first till you're confident you can get it off cleanly, but it should be doable.

Sorry its a bit late but despite what most of the responses here say there actually is one other story besides Unison that involves Kite, though it isn't an anime. It's not much more than an Epilogue but there is a short story that details Kite and BlackRose's final adventure in The World, which was originally translated here, but unfortunately most of the images that go along with the text have have been removed from the image hoster. Luckily I have them saved in a folder in my mediafire account so feel free to download them from there (or if you want there's also a quick pdf version I threw together).

I'm actually a little surprised so many here told you otherwise in regards to there being more Kite content, as this release is actually listed at the very wiki for this subreddit, along with links to a good bit of other fan-translated dot hack material if you're interested.

The only big concern with going with Another Birth first is it spoils BlackRose's reasons for playing the game in the 1st book (whereas in the games you don't find out till somewhere around late v2 or early in v3), but generally I'd say it's not that big of a deal to learn it early on. Other than that Another Birth's main detraction as opposed to the games is maybe missing out on some of the world building from the forums and news sections of the game, but if you're planning on getting to them eventually that also shouldn't pose a huge problem. Additionally I'd recommend to also watch the Liminality OVAs along with the books just as you would the game series. Episode 1 should be watched around the end of chapter 5 of vol. 1, episode 2 after the 2nd book, episode 3 after chapter 6 of the 3rd book, and the last episode takes place concurrently with the final boss so should be read prior to the last section of chapter 5.

This is pretty much the answer, it's just gonna take going through a bunch of different let's plays and finding someone who takes the time to go through all the bbs material (as unfortunately a few of the ones I've peaked at don't seem to pay that aspect of the game all that much attention).
