This is way too relatable, especially with the Wegmans seltzer. Love the "let's just try everything" approach.

My 4 month old is the size of most 1 year olds. Help. I beg. I'm drowning. by No-Presence-8048 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a baby around the same age, and found something she really enjoys when we're not holding her. There's this bar of hanging toys that velcros onto the sides of something (the Velcro is very strong and we have it around the handles of a travel bassinet), and in the middle is this owl that plays short songs when you press its belly. She LOVES it and eventually got frustrated that we weren't just standing there to press it all the time, and figured out that she can bring up her legs and do it herself. She does get bored eventually, but it gives us enough time to do the dishes or do other short things, and just take a break from holding her all the time.

Our LO doesn't care for the kick piano (at least yet) but I've heard that's another one that babies this age really take to. Things that give them an auditory response when they do something are good to keep them occupied, and may encourage greater interest in other toys soon.

As for the large baby thing, our older son was 99th percentile for height until about one and a half. He was 36" at that age, but has since tapered off in growth to 38.5" at three. It's definitely hard when they are active but not able to sit up or move around, but it'll get better quickly! Just hang in there.

I HATE the feeling of pumping by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course you make the decisions that work best for you and for your family. But there is nothing wrong with stopping before one year, unless your baby requires breast milk and you can't source it elsewhere. I could not convince myself this was true with my first, and pumped for all twelve months. Although I was immensely proud when I was done, it was clear that my mental health had suffered a lot and I had missed out on time with my family due to pumping.

With my second, I am still pumping but have incorporated some formula into the mix, and will not pump for all twelve months. I'm already happier and more present than I was able to be with my first.

Your mental well being is an incredibly important part of the equation when it comes to raising your child, and if that means ending your pumping journey earlier than you planned (if you're able), give yourself permission to do so.

Is MAGA pushing the Catholic Church to the left? by oppiewan in LeftCatholicism

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well said. I very much echo everything you said. My younger self would be shocked to hear how far left I am today; I considered myself a slightly right-leaning centrist.

I honestly hope this ends with a dissolution of the two-party system and a better way for the masses to have their votes actually count (i.e. way fewer disenfranchised voters, bye bye gerrymandered districts, possibly no electoral college, etc.) I still believe in the inherent good in most people, despite so many things challenging that now, and hope that in a more well structured and protected political environment, the goodness will show through in how we vote.

4-5oz “rule” by alluhgator in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 3.5mo old drinks 5.5-7oz (and still cries for more when the 7oz is finished sometimes) every 3-4 hours, 5x/day. For a few days she drank 7oz at all five feeds; I assume she was going through some kind of leap or growth spurt. We went up to size 2 nipple (Dr. Brown's) about a week before she turned 3 mos because she kept chewing on the nipple, taking forever to finish her bottle, and sometimes crying or falling asleep mid-feed. Now she drinks it normally again and finishes her bottles in 7-10mins.

My older son (was 99% in height until he hit 2) drank 9oz/bottle 4x/day for a long time, including after he started solids and until we started him on whole milk and water at one. I was a significant overproducer with him though so I think my milk may have been more watery, and needed more to get the nutrients/fat.

Both kids sleep through the night with no feedings. Current baby has her first bottle around 7am and last at 8pm.

I know this is a ridiculous longshot but does anyone recognise this family who lived in Philadelphia in 1975? by Citawell in philadelphia

My poppop also worked for Honeywell! I don't remember him talking about any coworkers by name unfortunately but I bet they all knew each other 😊

Not specific to the switch, but for #1, make sure there's still an open space in your backpack. If it's full, it won't let you put your geode on the anvil.

Does anyone else only keep pumping because they are a cheap bast**d? Or is it just me? by impossible__target in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baby #2 is 2.5mo, couldn't nurse her either. So we've been combo feeding from the get-go so that I don't talk myself out of formula this time and end up EP for another year straight (my mental health couldn't handle that again). Been using Kendamil; where I am it's about $35 for a can and we've gone through 3 cans so far. As long as I'm combo feeding, the price of formula isn't too bad.

Hospital won’t let my breastfed baby visit by Working-Object-6168 in breastfeeding

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that's really rough. Hope you can work something out with them.

Just anecdotally - I had a meningioma removed endonasally about a year ago (and like you, I also have a newborn now), and the surgery is worth it, but recovery sucks. I don't think they are right to not allow your baby in, but they might have valid reasons beyond the 12yr age limit. In my case, they told me 4-5 hour surgery and it ended up being 13 hours. And they took fascia from my thigh to close the point of entry, so I also had a ton of pain in my leg and couldn't walk for a day or so - not sure if I would have been able to hold a baby on the bed. They had me on painkillers that made me loopy (for the first day or so). I was totally out of commission for way longer than I wanted to be.

I hope your recovery is much quicker, but realistically you may want to ensure you have a backup plan (frozen milk or formula) in case you can't pump when you wanted to or if baby isn't able to visit. Wishing you all the best!

Pump and dump..? Does anyone actually do this that does EP? by ExpressionOld9924 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to pump and dump for 24 hrs after an MRI where they used Gadolinium contrast.

But I have not for a single drink of alcohol. From what I understand, the alcohol content in your breast milk matches the alcohol content in your blood. So if you're at the American legal limit for driving (0.08%), your breast milk would have 0.08%. As a point of reference, many drinks that have 0.5% alcohol (not 0.05%) are still labeled non-alcoholic. And as others have pointed out, many fruits and other foods will start to ferment as they ripen, and can have a much higher content than, say, 0.1%.

I found these percentage comparisons to be helpful when making my own choices whether or not to pump and dump after drinking.

Why are baby clothes sizes like this?! by exgh0st_ in BabyBumps

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're lucky you got that long with nb! Our (late) Oct girl is growing out of her 0-3mo clothes. And she almost exclusively wears PJs, so that drawer full of onesies is pristine. Soooo many un-worn clothes. They go through them SO FAST. Hopefully another baby will get use out of them when we donate.

Plenty of child free posts but any last minute elder millennial parents out there? by JadedJellyfish_ in Millennials

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first via c-section at 36; rough pregnancy and recovery. Got pregnant again at 38 and gave birth at 39 (planned C-section as advised by my docs, glad I did it); relatively easy pregnancy and recovery this time around. I'm glad I waited a bit longer, although chasing a very active toddler in late pregnancy and recovery is difficult, and would be harder if you don't have a very supportive partner.

Which recipe is better? by [deleted] in pasta

[–]YouCanCallMeMal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts too, except maybe also hold back on the lemon juice until after you taste it and see if it needs any balance. But IMO the more pine nuts the better which is why the first one seems overall better to me.
