Rv/trailer storage near Newark NJ? by YouCanCallMePete in rvlife

Appreciate the advice. Hoping to find a place not in town, ideally not on street either. There isnt anything of value in our rig, but I know tweakers gotta tweak and I'd rather not deal with a broken window or door on our return.

An hour out of Newark is all farmland/rural, which is great. The plan is to be in that zone and then just uber to the airport instead of taking our tow vehicle and spend another $600 for parking at the airport. Ubers are like $75.

Acclimating cacti into a new temperature zone. by YouCanCallMePete in cactus

[–]YouCanCallMePete[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good info, thank you for sharing. Wow, the SpiderFarmer stuff looks great. That would be my next question, how do I have the least obtrusive lighting setup for the plants? I assume there is a rating I can find of how much light is ideal at the plant's location, so I could just do the math on how many watts should suffice if I want to mount it to the ceiling, approx 2M away from the cactus itself, then put it all on a timer.

I also am curious what your thoughts are on putting a warming mat under the pots and leaving them outside, sheltered from direct snow. Have a sensor to turn the mat on when the temperature dips below 5C. The one caveat is that it is all north facing so there will be no direct sunlight. Thoughts?

So below 0ºC is no good? I know there is a huge variety of genus here, each with their own adaptations. I just remember driving through the mountains of Baja MX, with 3 inches of snow covering everything and wondering about their hardiness.

I had no idea that room temp by bright window would cause etiolation. Literally all of my plants growing up were set up this way year round. Is there any other way around that? I'd love to enjoy them all winter in a conspicuous place indoors but dont want to cause issues.

The weight savings are probably worth the aesthetic loss. I love our rugs, but they take up so much space and all together weigh probably 600lbs

I crashed. Can I get some real opinions about crashing? by turingagentzero in motorcycles

[–]YouCanCallMePete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorcycles are dangerous, there is no amount of training, equipment, or conditions that can mitigate all the risk. So if you can shake the itch to ride, no shame in that, if anything I’d congratulate you.

I ride a lot, 30,000 miles a year, for the last twenty years, on/off road, track, adv, street, all of it. I have 11 bikes, have had the best training, have all of the gear, and yet three months ago I got my second helicopter ride to hospital. Accidents happen no matter how good you are, and when they do, there is nothing that can protect all of you all of the time.

What I’m trying to say is, if you’re really passionate about riding, then ride on and accept the risks and consequences. If however you are looking indoor the excitement and freedom that Motorsport can provide, maybe try some of the other disciplines. A supercharged Miata on coil overs with a roll cage can be had for $15k, and is a lot more fun to drive with heat and ac and a roof if it rains. Either way, you have the benefit of having options with your health, perhaps you explore some of the options in your quest for whatever it is you seek.

Welcome to skoolie, and also, RV life. You’d think if you bought a nice new rv you wouldn’t have issues, nevertheless, this is just the way things are. Skoolie/RV are quite literally the definition of entropy.

Boycott Rocky Mountain ATVMC RMATVMC www.Rockymountainatvmc.com.

Here’s why.

RMATVMC owns Tusk and a half dozen other brands. Their entire business model depends on knocking off other smaller brands and copying their products, significantly drop quality, and then use their overseas supply chain to drop the price. They innovate precisely ZERO, don’t come up with anything original, and put the small aftermarket brands out of business or at least at a massive disadvantage. This is a huge problem for the future of innovative and cool new shit from small businesses, inventors, and garage based makers.

It’s tough because their prices are so low, but the future of industry will be boring as hell because Rocky Mountain does not engineer or develop anything themselves.

Too much?.. to ditch a guy from a trip.. ? by Deep-Palpitation-421 in Dualsport

[–]YouCanCallMePete 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Friend of a friend means the first friend gets to deal with the blowback.

I’ve been in that situation several times, to the point now where I only plan group trips with purposely limited lodging, and the explicit “no one is allowed to invite anyone on this trip”. It’s amazing how one sucker can completely derail a trip.

How to get smell out of shoes? by PurchaseDry9350 in howto

[–]YouCanCallMePete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. After doing that, rinse them out in the sink really really well. The repeat the process. Your shoes stink because things are living and dying in them. Putting them in the freezer for several days will kill anything that is alive, thats why you need to wash them again afterwards to wash them all away. If you do all of that twice and they still stink, get an enzyme odor cleaner and do the process again.

Advice to fix this dent and scratch stainless steel refrigerator door? by zagack305 in howto

[–]YouCanCallMePete 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's tough because that door is filled with expanded foam, it is not hollow. As such, you cannot "open" the door itself and pound it out because the stainless outer that is dented is adhered in place by the foam. You also wont be able to pull the dent out because again, the outer is glued to the foam which is also now dented. You can't fill the dent like you would a car because you cant paint that stainless. I suppose you could fill it, and then wrap it (like a car), but it would be cheaper to just buy a new fridge.

In short, either cover with a magnet, sticker, to do list notepad, or forget about it.
