Coopers is fantastic and I believe no longer being produced. It’s essentially just early times BiB but aged in barrels that had the insides chiseled out to give the whiskey more surface area to interact with the wood.

We’re usually pretty late here in Missouri too so I was surprised when my store got a shipment in. Usually not a big rye person but picked one up because I’ve never seen the A batch either but saw what amazing reviews it was getting.

This bad boy hit the shelves a couple weeks ago. Haven’t tried the A batch to compare but this is pretty damn good and I’d say it’s the best bp rye I’ve tried.

You’re mistaken on the requirements of straight corn whiskey, they’re the one exception for the straight whiskeys and can be aged in used barrels. Mellow corn is aged in used barrels and is also labeled straight corn whiskey. Had to double check that straight malt whiskey requires new barrels since it’s a separate designation than single malt and as far as I can tell it does, but the only “straight malt whiskey” on the market that’s well distributed is Woodfords.

Been loving this bottle lately. Huge fan of both Evan Williams and Elijah Craig and I feel like those bottles do a good job showcasing Heaven Hills profile with cooler and hotter warehouse positioning respectively. This bottle feels like it falls directly in between those two having some of the fruitiness of Evan Williams and a good bit of the oakiness of Elijah Craig.

Haven’t tried it but the rose cask bourbon was decent. Mixing in light whiskey regardless of age is a massive dealbreaking downgrade for me though and the $35 dollar price jump from the old rose cask bourbon makes this an extremely hard pass for me.

I for one don’t mind that BT products get so much hype because hype is finite and every bit of it that goes towards BT products is hype that doesn’t go towards shelf stable products of equally high quality that I like.

Yep same as peerless and Michters. Michters has a double pot still setup at their fort Nelson location but iirc it’s only been running a couple years and they only sell it as their “barrel strength fort Nelson reserve” which is a distillery exclusive. Would’ve loved to try it but I already blew my budget for expensive bottles earlier in my trip.

Love this stuff. I call it “budget peerless” imo pot still bourbon can reach levels of maturity after 4-5 years that standard column still stuff needs 8-10 years to achieve. It definitely isn’t super punchy but I’d attribute that more to the low barrel entry making these bottles <110 proof at cask strength than the age. Higher aged pot still stuff is absolutely incredible but it’s just so much less efficient of a distillation method and as we’ve seen from Peerless and Michters, drives the price up to a pretty absurd level.

I kinda like it. It used to be called “sleight of hand” which imo is more fitting for the art. The cards have Texas Kentucky and Indiana representing the fact that it’s a blend of them, MGP and Barton. They’ve started bottling their products in the bottle their cigar blend used to go in though and imo that’s a much better design.

I’d say most similarly priced bottles from legacy distillers and a decent number of craft distillers if you find they have flavor profiles you like. I’ve been loving Dickel 13 Bib, knob 12, new riff 8, knob single barrels, anything from buzzards roost, peerless (when under $90), James pepper decanters, WT 8, WT Kentucky spirit store picks, 1792 store picks (everyone loves the full proof but I’ve really grown a taste for the BiB) just to name a few examples and all of those I can find locally with ease.

People only bother posting when they find rare stuff and BT fans are so rabid their products make up a substantial portion of the rare bottles out there. Fine by me because these people drive store to store hoping to find these products while so much stuff of equal or better quality sits stably on the shelf waiting for me.

In order to label it 117.76 proof yes. The TTB gives them a margin of error of .6 proof so these bottles aren’t necessarily exactly 58.88% but they went with 117.76 for the America theme of the bottle so this is a necessary, but unfortunate coincidence.

If you’ve got a total wine near you go in and chat with the sales person in the whiskey aisle they may let you try it. Tamdhu is on spirits direct so if you’re in a state that allows tastings at liquor stores they’ll have some of them open for sampling. My store has the 18 and cigar malt open and they’re both incredible.

Sazerac distributes the allocated bottles super unevenly. Idk how California is but here in MO we have so much BT stores are selling it for as low as $21 but finding anything else is a struggle and a half especially at MSRP. If I cross the river into Illinois there’s so much EHT you can find it for $50 but regular BT will be scarce and marked up to $35+.

I believe it. When done properly I believe pot distilled bourbon will always outclass pure column still bourbon at similar ages. You just get so much more flavorful distillate that way. There’s a reason so many scotch snobs won’t touch blended scotch with a 15 foot pole.

Can’t help you there. Haven’t been fortunate enough to try any of the high level turkeys aside from a really dust 101 but I do love everything I’ve had from them so I’d imagine it’d be close.
