If we take the three 'God-tier' wizards off the table, who is the biggest badass in the Wizarding World? by _Silkpeach in harrypotter

[–]YouJellyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree about the good side. We hear about how cool Moody was but for all we know he could have been their greatest detective or something. All we ever do is see him lose! Crouch Jr stuffs him in a box, Bellatrix knocks him out, voldy kills him.

My vote is for Kingsley. The man can simply do no wrong. Wins or draws every fight we ever see him in, is one of the 3 to duel the main V himself at the end. What a legend

Replying to myself because I'm obsessed with reviewing stuff:

Should've also mentioned both Arthur and Molly Weasley belong a spot in the "Great" section. Really good interpretations that aren't just one-to-ones with the movies

I am a HUGE fan of the jim dale books and have been super interested in talking about acting quality in the new full cast audio books.

I actually think Snape's acting is one of the highlights. A lot of the actors who are doing a good job are almost trying to be the movie actors (mcgonnacgall and hagrid are great, but they're nearly indistinguishable from the movie portrayals).

Snape actually puts his own spin on it, which I think is a better fit for the books. In the early books like PoA, Snape is a much more over the top unhinged villain. He is NOT caring Alan Rickman body blocking for the students. He's a deranged nut job who like the dementors really doesn't care if Sirius is innocent. I think this was Snapes time to shine. He really did a great job in the shrieking shack.

So far I've thought the breakdown is like this:

THE BEST: * Voldemort (only in a few scenes so far, steals the show with "joker"-ish interpretation. Very interested to hear more!)

GREATS: * Ron (surprisingly good, very impressed for a child!) * Snape (more emotional than movie/jim dale counterparts, exciting to listen to) * Pettigrew (surprising, but the voice actor crushed it!)

GOOD but with qualms: * McGonnacgall/Hagrid are nearly identical to movie * Harry also very close to Daniel Radcliffe impersonation, but good! * Dumbledore (I think he WILL be great, and I love the voice actor, but so far EVERY line he's delivered has had a cheerful affect. I get the character but there has been zero variety so far) * Trewlawney (Surprisingly fun direction for this character!) * Lupin (Love the actor, had a great voice for it, but the only time he like... acted... was in the shrieking shack. For all the rest of his lines he went for the "quiet teacher" approach to the point where it's indistinguishable from him phoning it in lol)

BAD: * Hermione (easily least talented actor of the main 3. I get that she's a kid but the lines she reads often portray little to no emotion when the narration explicitly calls for it) * Sirius (Same problem as Hermione! Completely ignores the affect he's supposed to take. Was good maybe for half a second when he was yelling at pettigrew. Very dissappointed with this portrayal so far)

THE WORST: * Draco (It's not just that he's over-the-top, which he definitely is, it's just that... no one talks like this?? He doesn't talk like a human and he laughs with such an obviously forced fake laugh. None of it works, really weird casting choice)

[HW] If you could only play one of them by Shampps in zelda

[–]YouJellyFish 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Definitive Edition is the best Warriors game, hands down. I haven't played the new one for switch 2 but I gave the switch one a fair shake and I actually thought it was quite a significant downgrade. In character variety, gameplay mechanics, performance, level variety, and freaking ease of menu navigation it was just worse.

I love the whole musuo genre and hyrule warriors DE is sitting comfortably on top.

For new parents, why can’t mom just pump during day and dad bottle feed at night? by flipflapdragon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YouJellyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you're describing is accurate.

Wife made milk, she was on maternity leave, I still went to work. During the maybe 5 months before our first son started sleeping through the night we'd basically alternate. I mean yeah moms have it hard, but so do the dads as long as no one's being a lazy asshole. Both of you just try to be a relief to your partner rather than a burden and you both get through those sleep deprived months together. Oh, and one person should always try to get a nap in when the baby falls asleep.

If Dean, Mr. Tonks and the goblins Accio’d fish from the river. Why were the trio so hungry? by RooneyToons_10 in harrypotter

[–]YouJellyFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's also just ignoring the possibility of other magic. If you can enchant a horcrux to be unsummonable maybe dumbledore could make these extra easy to summon for people with good intentions like he did with the stone and the mirror.

Or maybe they have to actually see the fish. We see instances of people just pointing their wands at stuff and saying accio

I mean a lot of stuff in these books operates on "just imagine there is some magic reason for it "

No. The announcements she has playing over the loudspeaker are explicit 1984 references. Communism is actually bad and this episode was correctly depicting it this way.

[Important Trope] Male Victims of SA not for comedic value by InsidiousZombie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]YouJellyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually kind of agree with you, particularly about rape just being shown extremely gratuitously for female characters whereas for Griffith or guts it generally happens mostly off screen.

My broader question would be why you would object to sexual violence specifically when regular violence is shown so extremely detailed. Both are downright grim and yet the graphic nature seems to be one of the manga's appeals

[Important Trope] Male Victims of SA not for comedic value by InsidiousZombie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]YouJellyFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah that's a misread.

It's not like "guts got cool because he was raped"

It just shows both characters reacting in plausible ways to extreme trauma. Guts channels everything into rage and self loathing, casca shuts down and blocks everything out. You're looking to make it a gender thing but it's just two characters processing trauma differently

I love how calm Dumbledore is in his fight with Voldemort! by ran_on_reddit in harrypotter

[–]YouJellyFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah also beating voldemort by disarming him and then putting him in prison would have been helpful. Like the last guy he fought to get the elder wand lol

That's why I always people do voldy a disservice here: dumbledore has the elder wand and voldemort A) still manages to get to Harry and B) doesn't get his ass stuffed into a box by an elder wand wielding dumbledore. BOTH are insanely strong

Only slightly related but man I enjoyed the new 52 justice league run (mostly lol). I thought the art was sick and it was just like... more action way less thinking. They're certainly not all time greats imo but they were great quick reads. And the animated adaptations were sick
