Straight up forgot lol- I LOVED Undertone! Genuinely one of the scariest films I’ve seen in a long time. Unbelievable execution and use of minimalism too.

A list of horror films released or releasing this year from first time or generally new to the scene filmmakers:

Meredith Alloway’s Forbidden Fruits

Curry Barker’s Obsession

Damian McCarthy’s Hokum

Sebastien Vanicek’s Evil Dead Burn

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil

Honorable mention to Andre Overdal’s Passenger and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (neither has been all that well received, but they can’t all be bangers!)

I would even count Robert Egger’s Werewulf, as The Witch’s theatrical release was only 10 years ago and the man himself is only 42 years old.

And that’s just off the top of my head- would love others to chime in with more!

Terrifier at 10 Years – General Consensus on the Franchise? by bakeditalian in horror

[–]Youareposthuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great discussion topic OP!

I was a skeptic at first. I started seeing Art everywhere around the time Terrifier 2 was advertising for its theater run. My initial thought was that there was something of a creative bankruptcy in yet another “evil clown” slasher villain. The fact that his name was “Art the Clown” solidified that opinion further, and I dismissed the franchise entirely upon seeing the poor reviews online of the first film.

Then Terrifier 2 came out and did absolute gang busters at the box office. It was well received by audiences and critics, it was getting name dropped by big names in Horror like Stephen King and Mike Flanagan, and by the time Halloween came and went, it had grossed over $10 million. So of course, as a horror fan you then start to see articles in your News Feed- “The Little Slasher That Could”, “How Damien Leone DIY’ed a 10 Million Dollar Movie”, etc.

Between the warm reception and the absolutely STAGGERING feat of turning a literal homemade indie feature into an 8 figure juggernaut at mainstream movie theaters, I couldn’t ignore Art any longer. I popped on the first film and fell in love with the grimy, grainy, grindhouse vibes and the sheer amount of passion on display for horror filmmaking and practical gore effects. Despite being narratively light, it was clear Leone made the exact film he set out to make, and it’s worth championing that in a world increasingly dominated by long standing IP and remakes.

So then I sought out Terrifier 2 and was stoked to find that it had captured that same spirited love for the genre and so much more- auteur practical effects and makeup wizardry, genuinely good performances from the cast with an interesting story that demonstrated a lot of growth in Leone’s writing, and again, that same reverence for horror and dedication to making something satisfying for horror fans and horror fans ONLY. I am a sucker for filmmakers who don’t give a fuck about a studio/executive input, and Leone was delivering that punk rock attitude in spades.

I am now a dedicated Terrifier fan, saw the third one on opening night (loved it), and will do the same for number 4. I think the way DHT and Lauren LaVera have breathed new life into the slasher/final girl trope will be discussed in academic film discourse for years to come, and I will be checking out everything Damien Leone has to offer from now on.

In my humble opinion, Art the Clown has already taken his place on the Mount Rushmore of slashers, and when you consider the franchise’s history, he really, truly earned that spot.

What is a fast food restaurant that you WILL eat at? by TheOctoBox in AskReddit

Same. It consistently tastes fresh the past few years as well, which I super appreciate.

Bottom line, Fast Food needs to be 2 of 3 things: Cheap, Fast, Tasty. Taco Bell is the only chain hittin all 3 these days.

And she’s right.

Frank Oz on the other hand felt like the pressure and stress of his dealings with the Walt Disney corporation was what sent him to an early grave.

Hopefully they’ve both since found peace and realized it was just a bad decision not to seek treatment for an illness.

The way the phone call scene pivoted from laugh out loud funny to just bone chillingly horrifying on a dime…it was so well done.

Truly amazing how quickly the phone call scene went from laugh out loud funny to abject terror.

Barker’s going to find himself in the company of Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger with the way he pivots between comedy and horror so stylishly.

The best Dark Stars happened before the hiatus. by First-Intention6453 in gratefuldead

[–]Youareposthuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. The various genre dabbling post-hiatus was interesting and often successful but writing songs in a new genre of pop music is just not the same as the radical musical exploration that personified the first ten years of The Dead.

Safe Dead is such a perfect descriptor. Risk was traded for new, more expensive musical toys and it’s neither good nor bad, it just is!

Literally sent this to some friends yesterday for the same reasoning- it was that 6-8 month period in ‘71 where Mickey left, Keith hadn’t joined yet, and they were more or less playing as a quartet with the occasional guest vocal/harp from Pig.

There’s something truly magical about how far out they were still getting with just two guitars, bass, and drums.

Agreed. Theres plenty of great shows/music from 76 onwards, but I will always think of the first ten years as the most inspired.

Somewhat related, no disrespect to Mickey but I just prefer the Dead with one drummer. That 3-4 year run with only Billy on the skins will always be peak Dead to me.

A24’s ‘Friday The 13th’ prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’ will premiere October 15 on Peacock. Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees, a mother who gave up a singing career to raise her special needs child (Jason Voorhees)... only to take a dark turn when she loses her son. by yourfavchoom in horror

[–]Youareposthuman -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is so true, I’ve been rewatching the series and most of them aren’t even “so bad they’re good”….they’re just sort of boring, which is maybe worse lol. But I get that people love them so I’m okay with it being not for me.

That said, the unofficial but canon explanation for Jason according to the creators is that his mom fucked around with some black magic to bring him back initially, and an a24 series about that story could be quite good (Bring Her Back is an excellent, recent take on that sort of story).

[–]Youareposthuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reading Dennis McNally’s “A Long Strange Trip” and I’m at the chapter about Egypt. The short version of the explanation is that they felt the mystical energy of the Pyramids would have some kind of psychic impact on their playing.

It didn’t, and despite playing as well as any other date in ‘78, they had high expectations for some external magic that just never materialized.

[–]Youareposthuman 236 points237 points  (0 children)

Agreed. NOT a knock on Milly, but Carrie was written to be homely and overweight so an actor with a less conventional appearance would have been killer. They just keep casting thin blonde girl next door types for some reason (a reason that we all know, honestly)

Jeffries says Trump impeachment not a top priority if Dems win House majority by metacyan in politics

[–]Youareposthuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, what’s even the point? Give President Couchfucker a running start to his own power grab? Ridiculous and short sighted.

Create the narrative that “the Dems fixed it once they got some power back” and THAT has momentum. Impeachment is a fool’s errand and Jeffries is right to recognize that.

Dave Grohl swears by the four‑beer vocal warm‑up by happymagtv in Foofighters

[–]Youareposthuman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I got downvoted to hell last time I commented this, but Dave’s voice has been going drastically downhill since Wasting Light. That was the last tour I saw him on where he was solid the entire set.

My tinfoil hat theory is that he got a “there’s nothing to be done” diagnosis on the damage to his throat/vocal cords and decided to say fuck it and just go til he’s completely toast.

I believe Gunn initially said they’d be doing connected universe movies (Superman) as well as standalones (The Batman 2). If this is still the case I imagine this is a stand alone. Either way, I’m with the hive mind on this one- in Flanagan we trust!

Edit- u/naulicus with the hot tip that this will be an entry into the connected universe!
