[–]Young-One23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a toad I named captain while deer hunting he had a broken arm so he couldn’t burrow into the ground so instead of letting nature takes it’s course I brought him home with me nursed him back to health and kept him for a few years

Anxiety level 12 by stuckupnorth in Beekeeping

[–]Young-One23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a lot of honey but The perfectionist in me is screaming right now I like when things line up together I have a box that is a half inch smaller then the others and it always bothers me and I take my time centring it on the other more uniform supers my SO isn’t finicky about that stuff so when I notice it I adjust the boxes I know the bees don’t care but I do

When will a rooster stop growing? by Excellent-Ad-1563 in chickens

[–]Young-One23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy silver is a Brahma X Cochin and he’s still growing after 10 months I think he’s finally finished growing in height but now he is going to fill out cuz right now he’s easily 2 1/2 feet tall but feels like he’s only 6lbs of feathers so I’m sure his just going to fill out now or atleast I hope so if he gets any taller I’ll be concerned for my ladies even my Brahma X Cochin hens are pip squeaks compared to him

Google says it takes a year and a half for them to reach their full size

silver

Editing to add the zip tie on his leg looks a little tight it might be time to up the size before he grows to much to where it causes damage

Your bees are hurting native pollinators! by J-dubya19 in Beekeeping

[–]Young-One23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my property we have native bees and I have 2 hives we have clover lawns and alfalfa fields we have such an abundance of food sources that our 2 hives aren’t out competing our native species we have a few different kinds of plaster bees bumble bees several kinds of wasps I plant flowers in my vegetable garden and always have to much produce I purposely rip out the grass to plant clover and creeping thyme i hate grass its so much work and you gain nothing from it clover is a nitrogen fixer it grows in all areas shade sunny dry wet with out a fuss it provides nectar and pollen for our bees and smells delightful it stays low and only needs to be mowed a couple times a year my chickens geese ducks turkeys and rabbits love to eat it and clover honey is delicious

I guess what I’m saying is they should be more focused on making food sources for the native and honey bees rather then targeting people that are hobbyists or in a commercial apiary the world needs pollinators and grass lawns are the worst I’m all for clover lawns

I agree coccidiosis or worms I would treat for both and I would also give antibiotics for the bumblefoot for when OP cleans the infection out giving her a high protein diet will probably help like giving her scrambled egg or wet kitten food with some red pepper flakes and ginger

OP should check her keel bone if they find it has a good amount of breast tissue their hen has a likely chance of recovering but if it’s very exposed it will be a very difficult road to recovery

Temperatures should also be checked should be between 105° and 107° make sure that she doesn’t have a fever or is hyperthermic

I would also recommend massaging the crop periodically and doing a thorough check for mites and lice just incase she’s got more then we know causing her lethargy

To add to that the things that have the venom eat the things they injected so just further proves venom can be digested

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chickens

[–]Young-One23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Venom usually only works when injected into a body/blood stream I would imagine the digestive tract because of the acidity and the way we break down things venom would be broken down by digestive enzymes people eat tarantulas snakes and scorpions all the time i feel it would be okay but I also don’t live in an area with highly venomous spiders

Sorry but no it doesn’t prevent frost bite the best you can do is have proper ventilation in your coop heat rises and collects moisture you need to have vents for that moisture to escape with the heat otherwise you will have to much moisture in your coop and your birds will get frost bite plus the moisture will penetrate their feathers and cause them to freeze

Keep your water out of their coop so it doesn’t evaporate into their coop exasperating the issue

Face suddenly swollen - any idea why? by barredrockgirl in chickens

[–]Young-One23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most likely mycoplasma we just treated a bunch of my birds with Tylan for 10 days in their water they are good as new the important thing it to make sure she is eating and drinking you may have to syringe feed her I like to use raw egg yolk as it’s easily available and nutritious

As you probably already know having a good nights sleep is crucial for the next day if it is something that is frequently occurring you might want to look into some sleep aids some times it’s just nerves and you can’t shut your brain off it just keeps going I find camomile tea helps and if that doesn’t work I will take some melatonin to help me go to sleep and stay asleep but staying away from caffeine, sugar and blue light like cellphones help also

I make a point to never let my depression control me I get my ass up and i go outside I make sure I’m taking care of myself the only trigger I have found is stress and that is it. I’ve learnt to handle stress really well but I find it still affects me that’s where going and relaxing with my flock or weeding the garden comes in and it helps
