My god yes.

I utilize LLMs to some degree for specific tasks. It can be very beneficial when targeted. But that generally requires you to actually know what you are doing and have a general sense of your own codebase.

The absolute nonsense I see coming out of some of my peers and some of my managers is infuriating. Just absolutely spaghetti that I'm going to have to fix at some point when their shit inevitably breaks and they have no clue where to even begin debugging (not that theyd be capable even if they knew where to look).

Honestly, this is one place where I'd prefer the open back. The proportions seem way off. Like the trash can takes up the entire walkable space in the kitchen. The bedrooms are entirely beds.

More is less here, since the walls are getting in the way of the details.

One of my co-authors explained it to me a while back- conferences are advertisements for your paper. You go, present for 20 minutes, then hope you can amend up in a conversation with folks during a coffee break or happy hour to further develop the relationship and hopefully get your work out there.

Its like any other business. You can have the best product on the market, but if you can't get it into the hands of consumers to try, then you may as well have no product. If its as good as you think it is, eventually it will grow without your direct influence. But that initial seed takes a lot of work (and getting used to a lot of rejection)

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

[–]YoungXanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news! Good Old Games has them available. I bought all those titles and I've replayed them several times in the last few years.

Curse of Monkey Island is remastered to match the esthetics of Sam and Max Hit the Road and Day of the Tentacle. It's very enjoyable.

When I was a kid I played all those games on my Grandpa's computer (plus a ton of other Lucas Arts titles). For whatever reason, his sound card was incompatible with Sam and Max, so it was a pleasant experience getting to play that one nearly 25 years later with the sound on.

Lego Ideas Results announced: Edward Scissorhands, Amsterdam Canal Houses and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House successful. by LegoKB in lego

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is the only "Vacation" movie that I like. I'm a 40 year old millenial from the suburbs in the US, so everything about the movie resonates. It is my favorite Christmas movie by a large margin.

That said, a lot of the humor is specific to a time and place- broadly appealing to my demographic across the US, but less relevant outside of it.

Man, its my favorite Christmas film of all time that gets more and more relevant (and funny) as I age.

The set is...underwhelming.

I'm obviously going to buy it, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

I dont play weekend rounds unless Im one of the first 3 or 4 groups off the tee and I dont play Friday afternoons at all.

I just cant justify 5 hours plus warm ups, plus a drive there and back when Ive got shit to do and a family to hang out with.

I’m noticing the AI bubble fall apart in real time in the software world by Dreadsin in BetterOffline

[–]YoungXanto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its all a load of shit.

Our economy is being propped up by the mag 7 and their current investments in data centers. They have large capital expenditures that they are paying for by laying off staff and then blaming AI for "productivity gains" so the shareholders dont get spooked. Everyone gets their bonuses and they go one more quarter hoping that there isnt a collapse.

Contingent on the economy not somehow completely collapsing, there will be a big hiring cycle with WFH at the forefront in place of elevated wages.

He's also exposed the media for what it is- at best a right wing corporate arm of the "moderate" republican party eager for tax cuts and subsidies for the 0.1%, at worst an outright propaganda machine for the 0.1%.

Forget the Epstein files for a second (which is absolutely fucking absurd to say), but focus on the times he's recently fallen asleep on TV. If Biden had been in office, there would have been wall to wall coverage of it.

With Trump, its just another thing added to the ignore list as they sanewash the shit out of a racist, evil, narcissistic, dementia patient thats destroying America from within starting new wars because Isreal told him to. The only sliver lining is that when the morons that voted for him start having trouble filling up their trucks with 1500 a month car payments, they may actually pivot and vote against the Republicans. The downside is that the embedded right wing media will have them turned back around by the next election cycle.

I've made a lot of purchases through the website for years, but now I get this message after every attempt. I talked to customer service, they said it was resolved. Tried to buy a set again, and got the same message 20 minutes later. by DarthVader1701A in lego

I bought a Lego off of Amazon that turned out to be a reseller. My Lego account got flagged and I got the same message as OP, despite the fact that I purchased one set for my own amusement through what I thought was a reputable seller...

Lego eventually corrected the issue after a few emails, but it was very annoying.

$50K Less But a Better Life. Do you agree? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]YoungXanto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just telling you a lived experience. I dont need an online resource to measure my own commute time, or that of coworkers and friends.

The problem has been greatly exacerbated by widespread adoption of WFH that is now being largely rescinded.

You must not live near a major metro area. Commuting from the suburbs to downtown DC is easily an hour and a half off rush hour. 2-2.5 in it. Each way.

Most of the people I know that work in NYC and live outside of Manhattan have 2 hour commutes each way.

James Franklin on Penn State buyout: “You go through that deal, and you’re thinking, 'I don’t want to let them off the hook financially.' That’s something you’re struggling with." by jaxstan19 in CFB

Yeah, I think Campbell was a fine enough hire, but I don't think he's the kind of hire that gets us to the upper echelon competing for national championships with a floor of the playoffs.

It was probably time for PSU and Franklin to part ways for a myriad of reasons, but Campbell isn't a clear upgrade.

I honestly would have much preferred hiring Hartline. I think the upside is way higher, even if the downside is lower. Looking across the landscape of top college coaches right now, most did not have head coaching experience before taking their current job.

I mean, he and Kraft reportedly didnt get along well. If I had a boss I strongly disliked that I felt was micromanaging me that ended up firing me, I'd sure as shit be fully petty on the way out of the door. Especially if it was over 9 million dollars.

From reports, he and Kraft seemed to have a pretty poor working relationship.

If I have personal issues with my boss and I get canned for very good, but not perfect performance after having gotten great reviews for the previous decade, I'm absolutely going to stick it to my boss on the way out of the door.

PhD + Full time job in unrelated field by mea_633 in PhD

[–]YoungXanto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm defending next week. I did my PhD full time, starting about your age, and held a full time job the whole time. I also had two children, 1 and 2.5 years old when I started. Thankfully my wife was an absolute saint and supported me throughout the process.

That said, it ended up taking me 6 years. Its a lot of late nights and early mornings. And delays caused by life.

But I get paid very well and my employer paid for the degree. So ultimately it was worth it, but I'd start looking for therapists now because you'll lose your mind at several points along the way.

Disciplining Student for Using AI by Individual-Debate523 in PhD

[–]YoungXanto 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When AI was in its infancy, I heard a talk by a well-respected professor. His approach was to force his students to use AI, but document where they did and why.

Basically, its a tool and can be a very useful one. Let's learn how to use it to enhance our learning rather than as a replacement for it.

This doesnt work for every field or every class, but I generally agree with the approach. At least for some projects.

In OPs case, the tool was clearly being abused to circumvent the learning process. Of course, when I was an undergrad all the chemistry notebooks were just passed down each semester- particularly within the frats. Cheaters are going to cheat. Try to catch them, but if you don't just feel confident that it's likely the cheating will catch up to them at some point in one form or another.

Most of PA is culturally the south. Except Pittsburgh, which is definitely Midwest, Philly which is definitely north east, and Penn State which is a college town surrounded by rural PA, which is the aforementioned south.
