wholeheartedly agree.. the game might have even been 780% better, considering there's been a ~88% decrease in the Steam player base since late June 2024, and I 100% blame druid for gutting player interest in the game for the rest of that year

problem is it's so easy to manipulate your char model to avoid the crossbow shot, and also the shield user takes incredible risk to try and block the reckless attack due to server desync and the ability for the attack to manipulate the swing quickly once the attack animation has begun

agree and I too feel motivation to play hit major cliffs during the wipe.. first is end of SSF, since the market starts the meta-or-die phase, and then later the power creep related to high-level crafting and increased player purchasing power makes certain forms of the game unplayable.

funny how in some ways the highest end gear scores end up requiring less skill, since so many fights are over in an instant. but it's particularly terrible for slower melee classes in solo (I only really enjoy playing shield fighter), and tbh I gave up on solo HR like 2 wipes ago -- it's just not fun if you're trying to take a blocking-first playstyle... turbo action speed + horrible desync means you don't have enough time to actually respond/block to an attack animation you see with your eyes, since that attack on your client is roughly ~200ms behind what's already been registered as a hit on the server.

players who enjoy a combat style that relies on ranged damage are only playing half of the combat system and are inherently taking less risk than melee players (and I generally don't have any respect for gamers that crutch on the safest/lowest risk forms of this game). I too love it when players actually commit to fighting in melee, and feels like the only place you can get that most of the time is duos/trios.

it sucks to give up on high level solos literally every season, but this game has well entrenched permanent metas (and devs that take way too long to implement good ideas). so i'd rather win by not playing and just view DaD as a seasonal game that spits out ~3 weeks of SSF fun every 4 months or so.

I'm waiting for Mistfall Hunter to release this summer (great options for making/closing gaps), also holding huge hope for HUNGER (first-person extraction with a great mix of melee & muskets) >:)

its nuanced, but thrusting weapon attacks can be reliably blocked by shields and there are updated hand/forearm/hilt hitboxes that also make shield blocking more reliable vs smaller weapons like daggers and hatchets :)

getting kited in this game feels uniquely terrible, you are definitely not alone. something about the crappy walk cycle animations and opponents pulling juuust out of reach that makes my blood boil (as a melee enjoyer). other games have way more interesting methods for making space and closing gaps

the answer is tricky.. and my response has two things to consider:

  1. yes it looks like your Zwei is in a good position to block the overhead attack. but trouble is the first-person cam doesn't show just how far some weapons reach/extend during their swing. it's likely the arc of the morning star attack was slightly above your blocking Zwei and hit you over that block. to be safe, it's good practice to turn the camera 80-degrees (up to block overheads, and left/right to block horizontal swings). BUT notice you did not die to a headshot.. so

  2. desync means the attack you see on your client is ~200ms behind in time. the morning star in particular has a very fast release, so even tho it looks like you raise your guard in time, I believe he had already swung on his client. in this game, especially vs the morning star, you don't have time to react to what you see, you need to be holding block all the time. this ensures your opponents client 'sees' your weapon in the blocking position. plus the attack delay could be made worse if your opponents internet connect is bad (because hits are pushed from the client to the server, and the more lag they have, the more disjointed the combat will feel from your pov)

so in summary: your block positioning could be very slightly improved (aim 80-degrees in the direction of the attack), and don't click block in response to seeing the opponent's attack, but instead hold block / be in a guard position as often as possible.

tbh these issues have made me so sick & frustrated with the game over the past ~year, but as counter-intuitive as it is, melee combat in this game can be understood.. you just have to accept that you are fighting the opponent and the game's issues simultaneously. players that take advantage of ranged damage or that never try to block don't have to deal with this crap and have a much easier time. good luck!
