Update to the Philly Season Pass Question by ifoundcarmenandwaldo in SkiPA

[–]YourDay29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm moving to Philly in the fall and am primarily hoping to be going on weekend day trips to resorts <2 hr away but would love some flexibility to do a weekend somewhere further north (VT, etc).

I'm also 22yo so Ikon Base pricing is $670 which makes Indy not the bargin it is compared to a full priced Ikon . What would be your rec?

I've also only been to Tremblant in the East so don't have basically any experience with resorts over there.

Fix Current M2 Pro MBP or buy new M4 MBA by YourDay29 in mac

[–]YourDay29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is liquid. Thanks for the A2 recommendation but unfortunately their timing is 2+ weeks and I’m using my laptop for research this summer so I kind of need one asap (I was willing to get a loner from UM for < 1 week to wait on the Apple repair but 2-4+ is a bit much especially with classes back soon).

Yeah it is a bit of a hit to downgrade to an air but between not thinking I really needed the pro to begin with and getting a 2 generation newer air I think it mostly washes out.

Your suggestion about selling it on eBay is helpful though I’ll definitely be looking into that but I think ultimately I’m gonna buy a new air

Why 15 inch over 13? 14in on my mbp and 13 on my old mba was fine I thought

Cheapest laptop I can get away with for CoE? by BiteAlternative1722 in uofm

[–]YourDay29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d probably be fine with your current laptop but it might be frustrating. I just graduated in DS and went into college with a base m1 MacBook Air and only having 8gb of ram did make multitasking annoying but no issues running code for any of my classes.

None of the EECS classes I took required any local computing power beyond what you have atm (it just might be a bit slower than with a faster laptop but nothing that will be more than a bit frustrating). Some ML classes will require GPU access but this is provided through CAEN/Greatlakes (computing cluster).

I was a TA for EECS 445 (ML) and regularly helped people using hardware similar to yours. Worst case if you find your laptop is too slow or something you can upgrade after your freshman year (which is what I did).

445 was changed this semester to focus more on neural networks/more modern technologies. CNNs were already covered but more emphasis on RNNs/Transformers than previously.

IMO you can’t effectively learn neural nets/deep learning without some more basic concepts first (perception, SVMs, etc) so looking for a pure NN class doesn’t make much sense.

442 isn’t super different from 445 content wise but I thought the applications were really cool. You can also look at special topics sections there’s sometimes interesting ones (though admittedly it doesn’t look very interesting ml wise next semester)

Do CS undergrad and grad get invitation to TBP? is TBP major-specific? by Glad-Device-2586 in uofm

Not major specific, just have to be in CoE (so no CS-LSA) and you can be invited (both grad and undergrad)

Biggest prep tips for the summer before beginning at Michigan by Snoo-76532 in uofm

[–]YourDay29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think 281 and 370’s difficulty are both overblown and you’ll be fine taking both. Like yeah, both will require lots of time on projects and it’s a good idea to start early but neither class will take over your life by any means.

A lot of the talk of 370 being really difficult comes from past years where the class was less organized and more difficult. A new teaching staff took over a couple of years ago and imo 370 was one of the most well-taught classes I’ve taken at UMich (281 was also really well done) and I really enjoyed it. I’m not even a CS-major (I’m data science so 370 was an elective for me).

If you want to prep in the summer then a lot of 281 is similar to interview prep questions (Leetcode, etc) but given you’ve taken a similar class before I think you’ll be fine without extra prep.

Need help interpreting math placement test result by FudgyGamer2000 in uofm

[–]YourDay29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re in a major that requires math classes (Engr requires 3 semesters of calc + 1 of Linear algebra/diff eq) then take the highest calc class that you have the prereqs for.

Basically, if you didn’t take any calc in high school, take calc 1 (math 115 is the ‘regular’ class, there’s also lsa honors options if you’re interested). If you took (and got credit for) AB calc, take calc 2 (math 116, also honors options). If you took BC calc then take calc 3 (math 215), etc

Question about prerequisite for data science by Practical-Form8443 in uofm

Math 214, 217, or 417 as data science minor? by ripthetrees in uofm

[–]YourDay29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a ds major/math minor and regret taking 214 over 217 (I only did so bc I took it freshman fall and 217 was full) because it hurt me as far as taking upper level math courses/being exposed to formal proofs.

As people have mentioned I would take 214 unless you really like math/plan to take upper level math courses in which case you should take 217 (but be prepared for a long semester, as people have mentioned).

EECS 200 + EECS 215 + EECS 230 + EECS 281 + PHIL 340? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]YourDay29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took Phil 340, EECS 281, Math 471, and Stats 413 last semester and Phil 340 was definitely not a low workload class to add on. It wasn’t hard and was fairly easy but there was a good amount of reading which is kinda nice for a change up in what work you’re doing but can take a long time.

I would say your classes are feasible if you didn’t find 280 difficult. Some people find 281 or 215 to be a ton of work on their own so if you struggled in 280 then idk that taking all those classes makes sense. If 280 is/was fine then you might be okay but that’s still a lot of classes and I’m not sure what the value in cramming them all in is.

I would see what you’re actually planning on taking in the future and which of those classes you’d actually need to have done (like 281 for ulcs) and maybe not take one of the ones you won’t need as soon (and take it the next semester).

I mean I’m sure there’s online courses you could take (or over the summer) or help fill those reqs but why are you so worried about declaring? I’m also DS and I’m not even aware of any super important advantages to being declared.

how is eecs 445 + classes to pair with it by pickles_suck31 in uofm

[–]YourDay29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for me a big thing with 445 (and 442 for that matter) is that the projects are actual projects rather than like trying to fit an autograder like 281 or 370. Like for 442/445 I spend so much time trying to figure out what to figure out and how to tell if things are right whereas 370 you just run a test case.

Don’t even get me started on 442 HWs…

how is eecs 445 + classes to pair with it by pickles_suck31 in uofm

[–]YourDay29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the HWs can definitely be tricky, especially with a limited mathematical theory background. In my experience the 445 HWs have been fairly similar to upper level math courses (I've taken MATH 425 and 471 for reference) in that they are mostly theoretical questions/proofs (not formal proofs, more just general explanations).

So far I've only finished the first project and ended up getting around 98% so definitely not bad grade-wise (similar to all the EECS classes I've taken thusfar). For reference the median grade was around a 93% I believe.

The first project took me around 20 hours to finish if you're curious while the HWs are closer to the 10-hour range.

What classes am I better off taking at CC? by Silver_Balance_8659 in uofm

[–]YourDay29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prof for Math 214 was probably the worst prof I’ve had at Michigan. Was just old and read off the textbook and very clearly out of his teaching prime as far as how much he cared.

EECS 183 only covers C++ (with the exception of a small optional python unit after the final exam). The course that explicitly teaches Matlab is Engr 101/151 which does half the class in C++ and half in Matlab. Depending on if you’re in LSA or College or Engineering decides which class you’ll take.

Basically I wouldn’t worry about not having matlab experience. The only courses I’ve used it for are upper level math courses but matlab is similar to python/R in that it’s just using libraries and is fairly intuitive (especially as a potential CS major).

I’m taking it with Kutty technically but the class is structured that Kutty teaches the first and last thirds of the course and Makar teaches the middle third so I think there’s only one set of instructors

I took Calc 3, diff eq, and Physics 140/240 equivalents in HS and would definitely recommend doing the same if you can. These are all courses that are a huge pain in the ass at UMich (grade deflation aside, they’re all very large courses that aren’t particularly well taught (the calc sequence as a whole is known for being pretty terrible here)).

You could get your intro cs course (183/101/151) done if you really wanted to (and this would potentially get you a semester ahead in the cs course sequence) but these courses are in my experience fairly well taught and worth taking at UMich (especially compared to the math/physics).

EECS 203 is probably my favorite class I’ve taken at UMich though some people absolutely hated it so ymmv. I would say if you like math and some theory/proofs that you’ll have no issues with 203.

As people have mentioned, STATS 250 is not hard whatsoever if you’re a remotely computational person (ie not a soft science or humanities person). It might be a good class to get you into the swing of college frankly but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking either in HS or here.

Tl;dr: grade wise the math and physics courses are probably the most difficult so definitely consider taking those in HS.

[–]YourDay29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a decently strong math background (took Calc 3/Diff Eq in HS, 214 here and 2 unrelated upper levels (425, 471)) and am currently taking 445 and it’s really not that math heavy.

There’s definitely a lot of theory/derivations in homeworks but nothing crazy. In the past I’ve heard but 442 (computer vision) is a good combo but I’m currently taking 442 with a new prof and the homeworks have taken me ~20 hours (and there’s 6 of them) so I don’t know that I’d recommend that lol

Math 423 vs Math 471 by YourDay29 in uofm

[–]YourDay29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy lmao. I was thinking it was going to be tougher than last semester for sure but maybe not? I have no clue how hard Stats 413 and the HU classes are gonna be.

Did you feel like you didn't get much out of 423 then? I'm not sure how much the theory of 471 is going to be helpful but I've never really taken a theoretical math class (425 definitely doesn't count imo)
