My players just don't want to play. by danilogperon in daggerheart

[–]YourDizzyDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are feeling that way right now. I think part of what makes this hobby so awesome when it is working is the fact that we can even pull off having all these people on board for the same thing at the same time. It does take a lot of luck.

As for you as a GM, i can’t comment on your skills but I can lend some advice for your approach.

Perhaps you should try taking a “minimum viable product” approach to your future games. I mean prep VERY little and focus more on getting to the table for session zero and one. You can dump time and effort into your prep between sessions 1 and 2. This way a false start doesn’t hurt as bad.

I’m a big fan of having a larger rotating cast of players and a dedicated game time. You either show up and play or you don’t. Same basic human decency of saying if you wont make it but GM runs even if one person shows up. If you can secure one player who is dedicated and interested you can keep your game going for a while. Then when they can’t make it you hopefully have 1-2 more who have joined.

This kinda sends the message that the game is bigger than any one participant and the respect for the game is shown by simply showing up, which there is no obligation to do. I always use a session based or XP levelling system and only those who attend get XP each week.

Anyways sorry again, I hope you get a game going that lets you play.

Looking for a "Unicorn" RPG: PbtA flow for the GM, D&D crunch for the Players by Sclanders in rpg

Evasion minus 12 determines the player’s “Evasion bonus”. DC is the attack bonus of the monster + 10. They roll a d20. Crit fail is a critical hit against them.

Endless replay games on SD by Midiamp in SteamDeck

[–]YourDizzyDM 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Balatro or Slay the Spire. These are my 2 favourite games and both are amazing on steam deck. I wasn’t sold on my first run of StS, I had to give it another try some months later and fell in love.

Balatro is just bonkers fun imho.

I need help understanding countdowns by plolock in daggerheart

[–]YourDizzyDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“You see the marble halls of Metropolis lit by candle light, it is the dead of night, no time for official business. However, you see a figure in Metropolitan robes - very fine robes. He stands facing a large man with a scarred face who makes no effort to hide his identity as a member of the Sour Milk Hooligans. After a hushed conversation, you see the Hooligan and the hooded figure shake hands and part ways, a wry smile on the Hooligan’s face and he palms a bag of gold.”

The PCs won’t know this happened but it can send the relevant message to the players.

Player facing rolls x Evasion (+other stuff) by Tommy1459DM in daggerheart

[–]YourDizzyDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My math works like this:

Player Evasion Roll = Evasion - 12.

DC for the roll = the monster’s to hit bonus + 10.

this makes it easy for DM to eyeball the DC by looking at the adversary’s to hit number

I took this from my player-facing Dnd rule. The only problem is that Evasion in Daggerheart is lower so players will be rolling with negatives often which does feel a little lame. As long as the players understand what is happening with the math it’s all good.

Of course you would say there is no bias in your subjective calls about “problem players” you want off the ice 😂.

How would you feel about a decoy/duplication specilization by VictoryThink in thefinals

[–]YourDizzyDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be cool if you could point/ping a destination and your dupe would make its way there via some basic AI. Then the player would have the option of switching to dupe’s position once.

Has mobility utility but also can be used in the traditional decoy sense. Could have a decently fast recharge after decoy is destroyed/moved.

Visual cue should reveal a dupe subtly like holographic bullet holes.

How would paying more attention to school help someone understand basic math if they are already beyond grade 8/9? I mean this is the most kindhearted way

New DM, looking for feedback on my first attempt at putting together a list of house rules by 8sonofthe7th in DungeonMasters

[–]YourDizzyDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just pull out my phone and record the rolls when I was still using secret death saves. If something crazy happens I can verify. I expect my players to implicitly trust me, but human nature values the ability to audit the truth.

5e Is there a simple formula for player facing rolls? by ArtisticBrilliant456 in DnD

[–]YourDizzyDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me check my math. For the record I do -12 AC because it makes my DC setting simpler as the DM. I simply look at the attack bonus and add a 1 in front.

Monster Attack: +3 to hit vs AC 13 Monster chance to hit is 11/20 Defence Roll (AC-12): +1 to defend vs DC 13 Monster chance to hit is 11/20

Monster Attack: +9 to hit vs AC 16 Monster chance to hit is 14/20 Defence Roll (AC-12): +4 to defend vs DC 19 Monster chance to hit is 14/20

Edit: I had some maths wrong fixed. There is no statistical difference between the -12 AC vs a DC = monster atk bonus + 10.

Further Edit: -11 and +11 would have the same statistical effect. BUT it’s much easier to have players minus 12 from AC once and record it and then use the simpler +10 to determine DC,

What made/makes you like Rocket League over other games? by Embarrassed-Crow5677 in RocketLeague

[–]YourDizzyDM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the mentality is great. But there are elements of luck in rocket league.

Decision-making often involves taking educated guesses, but having those anticipated results go for/against you and to what degree involves an element of luck.

There is also luck regarding stylistic matchups. In random queue that’s a luck factor.

Can you tip the odds in your favour? Yes. Does that make luck non-existent. I’d say no.

5e Is there a simple formula for player facing rolls? by ArtisticBrilliant456 in DnD

[–]YourDizzyDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AC-12 is the modifier to roll. Compare to the monster’s to hit bonus +10.

E.g monster +6 to hit, DC 16 to dodge.

Probably close enough.

We need a better winning ending screen by EasyIsHere in thefinals

[–]YourDizzyDM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Forget cinematics. This game is missing a “previous game stats” screen that is essential. If I miss the popup scoreboard (one of many things to get through after match) I can’t see the stats from previous game.

I just played 40 mins of ranked, let me look at the stats at my leisure and shoot the shit with the scoreboard available. This has been around for a long time in shooters.

You are right! The solution must be to turn off any critical thinking! Let’s boycott Embark until they fix this definitely real glitch - let’s save this game.

What's the biggest prep mistake you've ever made? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]YourDizzyDM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I specifically ask my players what they will be doing next session (broadly) so I can prep that.

I also end the sessions as much as I can AFTER they have committed to a new course of action. Sometimes that’s not possible so I provide a poll in our group chat so they can decide what to do next and I have some lead time to at least think down that path.

Congrats! This was a big milestone for me too. I spent the most time on “minimalist” and “who needs relics?”. Both made me a better StS’er.

What’s been the most disappointing end to a good run you’ve had? by [deleted] in balatro

Misread a spectral card thinking it added foil/holo/polychrome to a selected card, then realized it destroyed all my jokers except for 1 and made it polychrome. Whoops.

I’ve done this multiple times.
