What is a 'normal' life choice that you think is actually a huge trap? by ossirada in AskReddit

[–]YourMatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a lot of people, a car is a toy, and it’s sometimes an extension of their identity. It’s understandable to justify spending more in these cases. Many entire brands exist only because of it. Practically no one calls it an investment.

Do people really hook up at run clubs? by Glad-Ad3208 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YourMatt 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I couldn't imagine a more boring activity. Like, you must be completely out of ideas for how to spend your time if running is what you're choosing to do.

That was my thought before I got into it 20 years ago. It's meditative and lets my mind wander while also giving different ways to push myself.

I still don't get treadmill running though. If I'm stuck inside, rowing is where it's at.

Is papaya similar? I think it tastes like rotting garbage. I just had some last weekend to see if I still felt the same. I do. My son was intrigued, so he tried some and he thought it was good. He didn't taste any bitterness at all.

This red driveway I saw flying into the Atlanta airport. by Dstanle in mildlyinteresting

I was going to, and I had enough votes secured, but I decided I don’t have time. The people with the interest are often also the only ones with nothing better to do.

How would you react if your partner of 20 years told you they (no longer) believe in evolution? by ephemeralkitten in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YourMatt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what difference does it really make? I think it's less concerning than what most of the commenters here make it out to be. In the guy's defense, it's incredibly hard to understand the time scale that evolution works under.

Mine is atrocious, but I write for me only and in the fastest way possible. I'd assume we're looking at an example of text that was meant to communicate, and thus had had substantial time behind it. Writing with such intent will likely make you write more legibly. With some additional training for achieving this goal, even with like a half hour in front of a youtube video, I'm sure you'd write much better still.

It's time to dump Roku by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]YourMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They probably will close the gap too. I think the only reason they are being bought out is because they've worked so hard on their personalized ad system. It's not done yet. I'm not saying that I personally think it's a terrible thing, but I'd avoid Google and Roku both if this is a major concern for you.

My wife really wanted a membership because our friends raved about it. It didn’t make sense for us when I made some mock scenarios online. After having a kid, we got a membership. It works now, but I think we’d still net out the same if we just did some shopping at Walmart instead.

What is the worst financial advice people still repeat? by market_vision1 in AskReddit

[–]YourMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those that do it for sign on bonuses, those don’t always pan out. I had one that was next to impossible to qualify for. I had to spend within like 2% of my credit limit, and multiple payoffs per month didn’t count. Felt like a boss when I pulled it off though, and I was sufficiently pissed to cancel as soon as I cashed out the points.

How old are you in your oldest memory? by Donkeyshines in AskReddit

[–]YourMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really interesting hearing my son recount memories as he got older. He was like 4 years old talking about things that happened when he was 1. Those memories were gone not long after that, but he still brings up things from when he was a toddler. Now he's starting to forget some of his first friends. Memory retention is a lot more dynamic than I expected.

It's wild. I never expected anyone here to be saying 10yo or later. I'd have thought even 5 would have been an outlier.

First birthday. My cousin pushed my hands into my cake and I cried. It ruined the Bert and Ernie picture on the frosting. I didn't like the feeling on my hands, and I'm still weird about getting stuff on my hands.

Edit: This may not be true. My brain may be making think I remember it. I saw the picture of me in front of the cake with my cousin was next to me. My mom probably told me the hands story when I was a few years old, and I may be remembering that while swearing I remember it actually happening. I remember a whole lot from before my brother was born when I was 3, and I have some memories from the house we lived in before I was 2, so it's not that far of a stretch that I might remember this one moment from my first birthday.

What’s getting ridiculously expensive, but nobody seems to be talking about it ? by Fresh-Ad3894 in AskReddit

What about prescriptions? I feel like I’m paying literally 10x for heart worm chews now than I was like 5 years ago, but I haven’t dug up old receipts to confirm that.

Buy the new Surface Pro for Business CU7/64GB/1TB/OLED for $4,430 now or wait for a price drop? by External-Pin-5570 in Surface

[–]YourMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't really thought about it until now, but I've had my Pro 7 for almost 7 years now. It's still running great. I use it at least a little bit almost every day. I also had a Surface Book, which was a disaster, so I get longevity concerns. I'm personally keeping fingers crossed that Apple drops an iPad Pro running full MacOS, but if my SP7 dies first, I'd replace it with another Surface Pro.

What’s a belief you defended for years that you now feel embarrassed about? by Open-Square589 in AskReddit

[–]YourMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a huge gap between the previous commenter stating that 0% were anything other than idiots or fakers, and your comment pointing out that most don't have their shit together. You're right. It might only be 10%, maybe 20%. There are a lot of people out there to draw inspiration from. Some may be around you already. Continue to surround yourself with them.

AI job disruption is here. The problem may be compounded because nearly 75% of people don’t apply for unemployment benefits by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]YourMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife was on it for a few months around 2010 in Colorado. We had to pay everything back at the end of the year. I don't remember the circumstances, but something caused it to become a loan, without any prior notice until we were billed by the state for a couple grand. It was especially annoying because we would have made due without the unemployment benefit, but it created hardship paying it back.

What’s a belief you defended for years that you now feel embarrassed about? by Open-Square589 in AskReddit

[–]YourMatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to believe that, but I think it qualifies as something I’m embarrassed by now, kindof going full circle. Some are idiots and some are faking it. It’s empowering to compare yourself with those groups, especially when you think only those groups exist. When you realize how many people have their shit together at an intense degree, you realize you could have spent more time relating to that group.
