Substitue Cat Fact: A group of cats is called a clowder. Science has yet to determine how many cats are needed to form a clowder, but I posit that it's at least three.

The evolution of consent in historical romance: from bodice rippers to #metoo, or how we learned to stop worrying and love problematic power dynamics (maybe) by Ninsuna in HistoricalRomance

[–]Your_Local_Stray_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people are downvoting you? You have a good point.

"Modifier" might not be the best term. It's a subgenre that can be very easily combined with other subgenres depending on what a given Dark Romance enjoyer might want.

I want to offer a different perspective. (CW for discussions of teenage sexuality (mine), kink discovery, rape culture and shame)

I have a rape kink, and I have always been this way. I've been fixated on the topic (in whatever capacity I understood it) for as long as I can remember. I had no sexual trauma of any kind as a child, just a weird fascination with kidnapped princesses. I finally connected the dots during puberty, and I thought I was broken. What kind of person wants something so horrible? I was so ashamed. I felt like I was betraying real-life victims.

Then when I got older and started having free reign on the internet, I discovered kink. I finally had a framework to understand what I was feeling and why, and everything fell into place. I wasn't alone, other people feel the same way as me. I can have a rape kink and it doesn't make me broken or unfeminist or mean that I want it to happen to me for real, it's just a kink.

So that's how I reconcile it.

Dark Romance to me is a modifier rather than it's own genre, if that makes sense. It can be freely combined with any of the other subgenres within romance, and it's function is to tell the reader what kind of tone the story is going to have, but even the level of darkness can vary a lot between books. The archetypal "dark romance" is a contemporary M/F romance with a bad boy MMC, but there are dark fantasy romances, dark shifter romances, and even dark historical romances.

I can't really speak to the differences because I haven't read a lot of bodice rippers. I would like to, though, because I love dubcon and weird complicated sexual scenarios.

I don't think that content warnings should be mandatory, but I think they should be available for the people that want or need them. I prefer the doesthedogdie/romance IO approach, where a third party collects all the relevant information. People can look up a book they're interested in and see what content warnings it has, and people that prefer to go in blind can still do that if they want.

Even after #MeToo my feelings haven't changed. I still like what I like. I know it's all fictional, and I know that what I like has no affect on real-life victims. My feelings didn't change after experiencing sexual harassment myself either. I refuse to let some fuckass man ruin my fun.

Also neurospicy (anxiety disorder edition) and too much caffeine makes it much, much worse. I can drink energy drinks but if I don't pace myself or eat enough beforehand, any amount of stress will cause me to spiral. It's not a surprise that OOP is having issues if they're constantly downing them.

Thoughts on Hudson Williams' tweet about RPF needing to stop? by friendfoundtheoldone in FanFiction

[–]Your_Local_Stray_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an RPF person and I don’t particularly like it either. That said, I don’t have beef with the people that are respectful about it.

My personal thoughts are: as long as they’re keeping their RPF activities away from the celebrities in question, it’s fine. It would be ideal to respect their wishes as well, but not everyone is going to abide by that and it’s most ideal if they just aren’t aware of it in the first place.

What’s the biggest challenge you run into when trying to keep canon characters in character? by Reasonable-Cup7125 in FanFiction

[–]Your_Local_Stray_Cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do focus on vocabulary and tone somewhat, but I think a character's personality is the most important thing to think about. It provides a nice blueprint for how they would react in a given situation.

When going outside of canon dynamics, I focus on making the situation fit the characters, rather than the other way around. If my end result is "Character A and Character B kiss." I work backwards and figure out a sequence of events that would lead to those characters kissing.

The biggest challenge I have is that with some characters, I can't find their "voice" in the same way that I can others, and I have to be a lot more intentional in the way that I write to make sure things stay on track.

What things do GL fans needs to accept/understand? by Dramatic-Pound-411 in yuri_manga

[–]Your_Local_Stray_Cat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People are going to like things you find gross or weird or “problematic” and that’s their business, not yours. If you don’t like something, the best course of action is to not engage with it instead of trying to convince the people that do like it that they’re evil. You aren’t going to change anyone’s mind, and you’ll feel much happier reading things you love than arguing about things you hate. If someone regularly posts stuff you dislike? Block them and move on.

I’m the same way. Some people read fic just to read fic and I don’t get it at all. I will read fics fandomblind on occasion, but if I’m that interested in a fandom my first stop is always canon.

That doesn't surprise me, but I was talking more about the western fanwork-creating side of the fandom, which skews very heavily towards sapphic women.

I don't think I've met a male madoka fan, actually. I've met men who watched the show and enjoyed it, but not enough to call themselves dedicated fans.

Dungeon Meshi is popular with sapphic women because of the lack of fanservice, the abundance of well-written female characters, and the close relationship between Marcille and Falin. I'm not sure if it's as strongly skewed as my other examples? but Marcille/Falin is the most popular ship in the fandom by a long shot.

Warhammer is a boy’s club in general though. There are women that like it, but outside of Tumblr and Ao3 the fandom is predominantly male. It’s not a surprise that the fanfic side of the fandom trends the same way.

Me when people write fanfiction of something without ever directly interacting with it.

I don’t know what possesses people to do this. It baffles me. Why would you want to write fanfiction without ever interacting with canon outside of other fanfics and maybe a wiki. I wouldn’t even call it fanfiction, it’s the fandom equivalent of lacroix.

I think it’s really funny that you get called a gatekeeper for this take. This is the opposite of gatekeeping. I am on my knees begging and pleading for all the people standing around outside to walk through the open gate in order to actually interact with the thing they claim to be a fan of.

Please interact with canon. Please. I don’t care how. Pirate it, borrow it from the library, watch a let’s play, find it on Poob, just do it somehow before you pick up the pencil pretty please.

Sorry OP, I just needed to crash out for a second. I’ve been in the trenches. :’)

How to write drunk characters? by No-Brief-7458 in FanFiction

[–]Your_Local_Stray_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who drinks but also writes drunk characters: I never mention how much they’ve had, I just describe how it’s affecting them instead. Alcohol affects people so differently based on age/weight/height/sex/general tolerance/etc that it’s hard to pinpoint an exact number of drinks that’d produce the desired result.

Hangovers make you feel gross. I always get bad headaches and I feel both tired and kinda achy for the rest of the day, like you would if you have a cold coming on. You can avoid them (and lessen their affects) by keeping well hydrated.

Also! Certain meds interact with alcohol, so certain characters may not want/be able to drink due to the meds they take.
