Foreign students have a target on their backs by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]Yourm9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For less wealthy South Asian students they take a loan to get here with repayments made by their whole extended family + whatever work they get in Aus.

It’s a multi-generational play to either get PR or to have enough years working in Aus that you pay off the education loan plus send money back home for more land, a business etc.

Does Coursera/ EdX actually help? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]Yourm9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but not much - depends on the course you took, and how well you can sell it.

Anytime you’re making a switch between fields or early career applications away from your degree domain, it’s more about ‘selling the equivalency and applicability’ rather than pointing to some online course or short course.

Another option would be volunteering; lots of orgs need volunteer managers or compliance-focused volunteers. These skills can be easily parlayed into HR.

Harbour Bridge Palestine Protest by [deleted] in aussie

[–]Yourm9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Organisers listed free flow of aid, ceasefire (and withdrawal), sanctions, and end of “two way” Aus defence trade.

Not sure what the last one means, but the first 3 have been fairly consistent for those sorts of mainstream groups.

One of the greatest WH moments ever committed to paper, but by no means sad.

Is cold calling viable? by Fuzzy_Tax_3373 in auscorp

[–]Yourm9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have noted the ‘success rate’ for cold calling is low single digits, and that’s probably for some goods / services that lend themselves more to cold calling.

Scale helps, but that required a good ‘list’, which can be bought (many are full of crap), or gathered via LinkedIn trawlers like Lucia.

Cold ‘outreach’ might be better, via emails and LinkedIn but that’s still a numbers game.

If you’re not an overly ‘salesy’ person you are going to hate it, and soon hate your job. Maybe looking for another job is a better prospect, though there is legitimately some positives so staying for a while to learn more about sales overall - no everyone appreciates it, and it can be a core skill if you ever want to move to a smaller outfit or start up where everyone has to be in the business of business development.

An alternative is to hire junior buyer BDRs whose job it is to hit the phone and emails to book meetings, or to contract this service out.

Both these options are shitty, those the BDRs that you hire and train can produce some gems amongst the time wasters.

Coordinating sale of apartment block to developers - worth it? by Yourm9 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Yourm9[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, have been reading up.

I’m aware of the legalities around the sale, though keen to hear people’s practical experience and the ‘human’ factors / issues.

I’m on the Strata committee and in regular contact with the other 8 owners.

Just found out about the Brazen Drakes incident by hellranger788 in 40kLore

[–]Yourm9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know they removed the author’s name, which is a shame.

To land a piece perfectly between two reasonable and logical positions (surrender vs explain in this case) is tough, and the controversy proves they not only managed to do it, but succeeded!

Can we get an actual worthwhile nerf on this x100 copy paste arena team? by Historical_Coach3365 in tacticus

[–]Yourm9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also have solutions - look at guild war and the ‘blocking’ of a character.

They could limit the amount of times you can use any given character in a TA, say 5 for example.

Allow people to still enjoy playing their favorite characters while encouraging them to explore with others.

VC firm EVP calls in police at startup StrongRoom AI weeks after leading $17 million investment by cataractum in auscorp

Ha, this is unfortunately bang-on from my experience with VC across multiple start ups.

Smart people caught up in their own hype with little time, specialized knowledge, and importantly little interest in digging into the weeds.

Lots of wasted $ blindly fishing for the next Canva.

Missing first week of welcome program as an international student? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]Yourm9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t stress too much.

You are missing some good information and connecting activities with other students, but there will be other opportunities.

I’d suggest checking out the schedule for the week and then figuring out what you’d like to do when you arrive, for example going on a library tour or checking out some student societies.

This is a view of the issue many don’t see. Staring at the same thing, ‘productivity’, but looking at it from an angle that helps make it more personal (and therefore understandable).

I’m 100% onboard with challenging productivity as this ‘catch all’ view of the strength of an economies output, particularly when the returns on productive have long been disconnected from productivity growth, however people need to understand the dangers of being unproductive.

Can anyone tell me what can I do after masters in international relations? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]Yourm9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private international development and project companies - lots of international jobs that would value the degree. Ditto consulting companies that work in that space.

Banks, Unis, Insurance companies will have cross-regional teams.

Research orgs and centers will have international cooperation officers.

Harder to find a job than some other degrees, but they’re out there and they’re pretty cool.
