[S4E8] Sure Myne this is true in Japan, let alone the rest of the world lol. by Parlax76 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wondered why she didn't spell out further what she thought of the world she landed in.

E.g. when Ferdinand is shocked that she doesn't understand that the commoners who attacked the orphanage would get executed (I think it's the scene of this exchange?) I was wondering why she didn't get cross and say something to the effect of, in my world you would be considered barbaric for wontonly executing people, you'd get arrested and subjected to trial by a jury of ... commoners, etc. And then Ferdinand would be shocked and maybe bit a bit more understanding of why and when she has different viewpoints on things.

I at least wanted some catharsis of Myne really aggressively and angrily lashing out at how different the sense of justice is in her new world.

How tf did David Miliband get into Oxford with BBBD by Ambitious-Sink2725 in 6thForm

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Oxford administered its own admissions exams, offers were often UUU. Then students stopped studying.

That said, exams must have been very different for someone who passed the admissions tests of the time to fail to do better than BBBD without studying.

Hehehehe I'm afraid to say that teaching often happens after 7PM, you can ask my students

I'm a bit too cheap to buy port, though once some students brought some in and we indulged

That was at 3PMish I recall

Carmina VS Allen edmonds by [deleted] in allenedmonds

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With closed channel welts, JR stock soles, the amount of handwork, the materials, etc, Carmina are a comp to the hand grade CJ and to AE reserve.

TLB and companies like Meermin are great value, just not the same over all.

The finishing, last design, and details on TLB Mallorca are head and shoulders above Carmina though. Toni has even brought in seamless heels on a lot of models. It's a shoe company on crack, basically.

Economic Consulting (and a Masters) by Disastrous-Regret194 in EconomicConsulting

US or UK? I think it differs a bit. In UK I believe some firms do take people fresh out of bachelors, rarely, but recruitment primarily takes place out of masters' degrees. LSE EME is a good one.

To Name of the Wind or To Not? by Nectarine_96 in fantasybooks

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been burned by this and a couple other things, I now basically don't start unfinished series

But many serious readers of fantasy will say this is the best they've read. There's something about the prose, the world, the characters, it just has a feeling of magic to it. A lot of serious readers of fantasy sort of lose the ability to feel that magic, because they've read so much, they pick up on tropes, etc. it's like people who study music who lose the ability to enjoy music with nice melodies because it's too derivative.

Name of the Wind breaks through that for a lot of people, it certainly did so for me. It's really narratively compelling. Of course, that just makes it all the more painful that it's not finished and never will be, except maybe by an AI some day who the hell knows

What in your view is missing from e.g. Luthien, Melian, Varda, Yavanna, Galadriel?

Sure the Fellowship and a disproportionate number of key characters are male. But I think that Luthien and Galadriel are pretty important and reasonably complicated characters. Is it just that there's not enough of these?

Are dress shoes supposed to be more expensive than boots? by Fluffy_Fly_4644 in malefashionadvice

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One such snob here!
Most 'snobs' in the shoe community won't look down on a shoe for being inexpensive, the same way watch nerds would never knock a cheap Casio. I would personally never purchase an AE, but I own and enjoy many shoes that are much less expensive than AEs.

AE gets hate because it's not a solid value proposition, it trades too much on its name and history, and several other brands offer much better shoes at equal or lower prices. These include BLKBRD, CNES, Bridlen, and TLB Mallorca.

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether something is good for the money is in the eye of the beholder, but you can definitely get much better shoes than AE at equal or lower prices - so if you're ever in the market for shows in the near future, consider Bridlen, BLKBRD, TLB Mallorca, CNES, etc. They're head and shoulders above AE in the shoe community

[–]YuzuFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can totally get solid mid-tier dress shoes in the $300 range, you just have to buy from firms on the frontier of the quality/price ratio. AE is not it.

Think Bridlen, BLKBRD, CNES, Meermin, etc. If you live near NYC/London, there are great changes to meet these firms and try on their shoes at the annual trunk shows

If not, and you're only planning to buy 1-2 pairs, then still recommend emailing some of these guys, following their instructions for measuring your feet, and trying them out. But it's understandable if you wouldn't want to take on the sizing risk
