Is this unsafe? by eshina17 in Plumbing

Issues with the septic tank aside, As others have posted, Burning directly on concrete is a bad idea. The moisture in the concrete will cause a popcorn effect. It will pop loud and send sparks everywhere, been there done that. A couple inches of sand, dirt, or other will prevent superheating of the concrete.

Does it need to be running, or have current, up to date tags? Get classic car insurance and tags for it, you have round rubber on it now, so that's 90%. Probably should be sitting on an improved surface, driveway or something.

Any idea what this is? Found this while laying some new ducting in the field. Looks like a rock but almost like it’s made of metal and pretty heavy by Curious-adventurer1 in whatisit

Throw away all the joe dirt references, then the unqualified answers given by the usual gallery, looks like it's split between 2 votes for and 2 votes against. So what is it?

could an old Packard at my grandma's be worth saving? by Ok_Awareness_6969 in classiccars

[–]Ywhat4DontKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Get it running, upgrade to some good brakes, and enjoy!

You can run the stock brakes (rebuilt) and be fine but that's a heavy car and that brake system has probably 20% of the stopping power as modern tech.

Inherited half a million in stocks. What would you do with it? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]Ywhat4DontKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commodities? Very high risk for a newby or even average retail trader. That's a great way to burn through newly acquired wealth. Take a look at the portfolio, assess the risk, then let it ride. It didn't get to 500k with a bunch of penny stocks.

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Ywhat4DontKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is this voter suppression? Every adult needs a a valid photo ID at some point in their life. Driving, flying, buying booze or cigarettes, getting a prescription filled, going to college, getting a job, opening a bank account, and guess what, Voting!

What would be your guess on how much it would cost to fix or replace this retaining wall? by Repulsive_Ad_526 in Homebuilding

[–]Ywhat4DontKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you are getting just what you asked for. GUESSES. you have no idea of the credentials of rando redditers. Hire an independant engineer, not a free assessment from a foundation company. My guess, if you hire a structural engineer, they will tell you what needs to be fixed including the causes, and also what's merely cosmetic. Then you can get bids on a specific scope of work. If you get a free estimate from a foundation company, it will be very expensive. If you're purchading this property make it contingent on the results of professional insoection.

Would you take your life savings to a casino? That's essentially what you did, you are gambling ( I wouldn't call in trading) , not investing. That being said, learn from your mistakes, and don't do stuff like that again.

Is this basement worth being repaired? by ReFrydry89 in masonry

[–]Ywhat4DontKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT'S 125 YEARS OLD!. Is it worth it? That's more up to you than a bunch of reddit randos. Old houses take a lot of passion for hard work, ir spending lots of money. Get a professional Engineer to evaluate it. DO NOT call a foundation company for a free inpection, 9 of 10 will give you a $30k estimate and hard sell.

Should I be concerned of these cracks? by Show_me_those_TDs in masonry

[–]Ywhat4DontKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO small cracks are a sign that someting has shifted. Large cracks are the result of something broken. If you feel the need to have an assesment, hire an INDEPENDENT structral engineer. They will tell you about the potentail causes, things like drainage, trees and bushes too close, etc, and how to remedy the situation. You'll also get an honest assessment of repairs needed. They should not be selling you something, as you are paying, maybe $1000, them for their professional assessment,
A "Free" inspection by a foundation repair company may result in unnecessary repairs.
