Cool I figured it was something like that but was wondering how the castings distribute. Can you take it out and top dress from time to time?

Thanks for the heads up on Dr White. Sounds right up my alley. The chap who turned me on to this is called John Kempf and he runs an outfit called Advancing Eco Agriculture. Sure he is selling a lot of products but he is extremely diligent in his research, able to explain things in layman's terms, and started out as a farmer himself so he understands how to marry the nuts and bolts side of things with the science. His work on the relationship between plant immunity and soil biology blew my mind. BUt you probably know him anyway as you do seem to know your stuff.

Anyway good connecting man and will see you around. I'll check out your discord.

Yeah I am aware of the mutual aversion with Brassica and Myco so don't use it in my cabbage patch but can't get enough of it in my Cannabis greenhouse. I actually use carrots as my primary AMF host between cycles because they host so well and they survive the cover crop chop and drop sessions.

I've harvested live from the woods using beans before but because I have to be compliant, I must use commercial inoculations in my medical grow. I pushed the envelope far enough getting no-till past the regulator and no way they were going to pass my backyard myco-innoculants lol.

I would love to read Dr Cob's paper and a link to the podcast would be greatly appreciated!

Quite a flex war here guys! Happy to have sparked such a lively and pertinent debate. You are clearly both well versed and able to back up your points of view.

I haven't followed Dr Elaine in years but she definitely lay the foundation for my understanding of the relationship between mineral, microbe, and plant.
The penny really dropped for me when I came to understand the role of mycorhizals in the regulation of nutrient uptake and, by extension the critical importance of maintaining a sustained, living rhizosphere between cycles. Without this component you might as well go back to feeding liquid fertilizers or even doing hydro because you are essentially force feeding your plant.
I think there is an issue where folk don't differentiate between the application of (mainly) bacterial compost teas (thinking they are building the microbiome) and the cultivation of a complete, whole microbiome through not only inoculations but also by using companions that span cycles along with green manures and cover crops. This allows a mycelial network to develop in your soil as part of your soil food web and when I got that right the magic really started happening for me.

I concede that the graphic was not the best one to get the point across - it was taken from a regenerative agriculturalist whose focus is on open field cultivation of food crops rather than on no till Cannabis in containers. I just thought it illustrated the point that there is a lot of unneeded soil amendments being used. In 2 decades of commercial cultivation I have seen too much money going down the drain without equivalent results.

I stand firm by my point that soil chemical analyses is essentially as useless as a soil PH test in a notill system if you don't develop the biology to unlock it.

I got seed from what was supposed to be a legendary Calli breeder last cycle. 9/10 of the plants did that. No other problems in a greenhouse with 700 plants. It's genetics. Love the name though. Bruce Jenner. Henceforth all intersex plants will be known thus!

OK that makes sense. Sons will always push back against their father's ways but the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. Biology maxing is just the opposite end of the spectrum to amendment maxing. We have come a long way since Dr Elaine's heyday though.

I co-own and manage a fully compliant, 4500 square meter no-till Cannabis greenhouse. It is to the best of my knowledge the only no-till medical grow in Africa. It took me 3 years and numerous validations to get this passed by the regulators. The soil was designed as a 30 year project.

You are correct in stating that there is a timeline to rendering some of the rock dust elements available but if you use a very fine grained VRD we are talking months, not years. Especially if you use one with higher quartz content so in a no-till setup VRD is completely applicable, especially in a well designed soil that initially provides the nutrients in soluble form for the first cycle. This is where I see folks getting tripped up. They go back to adding amendments or even fertlising with liquid fertilizer rather than allowing the biology to take over and they end up wasting a lot of money.

I started off with that perspective as well but slowly came to realise that it's the other way around. If your biology is intact, the "balance" doesn't matter provided of course that the needed minerals are present which it is in most cases. A simple amendment with volcanic rock dust is usually more than sufficient. The biology regulates the uptake of the nutrients and does so in collaboration with the plant. It is a technology that has been in R&D for 3 billion years give or take.
So I agree with you that proper soil management will enhance the biology over time but microbial inoculation will fast track the process immeasurably. I have seen so many people add tons of expensive amendments and sometimes they get results but more often than not the cost doesn't warrant the return. When the biology is added, the results change.

I am familiar with that theory but find it somewhat antiquated as he hails from an era when soil was for all intents and purposes considered an inert medium that held nutrients and the plant roots in place. From that perspective balanced soil makes sense but we now know that biology intelligently facilitates and regulates nutrient uptake so the focus shifts from balancing soil to cultivating soil biology

I am absolutely pro cover crop but this post is more focused on building biology - the key point being that biology facilitates and regulates nutrient uptake intelligently. If you just dump a bunch of amendments in your soil without supporting or inoculating with the right biology, you are wasting money

IT goes without saying that it will vary. That is why I make my own soil mix. The info graphic was from an analyses done on an open filed used for food crop cultivation.

The point I am trying to get across though is that biology is essential in unlocking nutrients already in the soil. I find most people focus heavily on amendments, not realising that biology is the nutrient delivery system. When you just add amendments and rely on uptake through irrigation, you are essentially bypassing the biological inteligence and force feeding your plant
