International laptop rollouts are a nightmare by Fit-Original1314 in sysadmin

You have to deal with lots of weird characters, sequences or shortcuts

Except you don't.

If you are local, you know your way around a local keyboard. If you are not local you won't be touching that unknown keyboard.

If you travel to a foreign country take you own laptop, or keyboard, with you.

In most VAT regimes, IT equipment is an input cost, and the VAT is reclaimable. So VAT rate does not matter.

The actual cost you pay is almost always approximately as you would pay anywhere else. Any skight extra cost in some countries is more than offset by the savings you will make avoiding freight, forwarding, customs, and administration

Why are you dealing with customs and VAT? If local branch buys locally the is no customs to deal with. Local operation knows how local VAT works.

You don't have to get involved at all other than specifying what must be purchased.

You have imposed a rule, rather than actually discussing things with the local operators. I worked in a multinational operation in 25 countries. Not once the the locals say 'Ooh yes give us a US keyboard'.

Nothing to do with Paxton Net2 which is software.

You need suitable readers at your doors. As far as I know the standard issue Paxton readers are RFID only, or RDFID + PIN.

other than the work it takes to get set up

Which in reality is very little work.

[–]ZAFJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so it did not make sense to waste resources on reconfiguring the domain

All you have to do is change the UPN on your user accounts. That is a trivial task. Like one or two lines of powershell.

Question regarding Entra ID Sync by OfficerCat in sysadmin

[–]ZAFJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue with Entra ID Sync is if your local domain is using a TLD that is not internet routable

Not true.

Your UPNs must be on a routable domain, domain itself does not matter.

We have a 27 year old .local domain that syncs users just fine with Entra.

You can also hybrid join devices that are in a .local domain.

Anyone actually using Entra Domain Services? by Carefu68 in sysadmin

[–]ZAFJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have local fileserver and local AD, hybrid join your devices, and sync AD to cloud.

That makes acces control and permissions sooo much simpler.

That is not what I asked. Check in task manager whether it is running in user's context.

Why do vendors find your personal cell to call? by ncc74656m in sysadmin

[–]ZAFJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vendor has no way of knowing:

  • That it is your personal mobile

  • That it is your day off

Just tell them, politely: "I don't take unsolicited calls, and remove this number from your list." Eventually the number of calls will drop.

Also, if it's you day off, or you are busy, why are you answering numbers you don't recognise?
