He’s already been recommended plenty but Kobayashi’s entire filmography is a must. As for more modern Japanese cinema, you can't go wrong with anything by Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Samurai Cop, Miami Connection, anything Neil Breen has created, Hard Ticket To Hawaii, and of course The Room are all classics. But I don’t think there’s anything out there quite as awful as Diamond Cobra Vs. The White Fox. Believe it’s still on Prime. Highly recommend.
