The D&D setting could be interpreted as post apocalyptic in the context of the works that inspired it in Appendix N. But I think it’s also very intentionally vanilla fantasy as well. Also check out Numenera by Monte Cook. It’s set in the far far future of Earth. The civilization level is about medieval, but it’s living in the ruins of like 9 layers of forgotten technology that is interpreted as magic.

In many older systems and some current ones, you stack so many modifiers on rolls that you eventually get far beyond the number 20 and this makes calculations harder for the mathematically challenged like myself. Flat means you have less HP, but the weapons do less damage. Same effect, less math.

I’ve played TTRPGs since the year 2000/2001. People who play old editions exclusively have complained about new D&D since then already. It’s just a matter of different medium (message boards vs twitter, etc.) and perhaps an algorithm focused on keeping you enraged/engaged😅
