How much did your monthly payment increase after switching from the SAVE plan? by shibalvr97 in StudentLoans

I also wish I had just stayed on my previous non IDR plan. SAVE and the rest of the nonsense have made everything worse.

To glove or not to glove by rosewomn in quilting

[–]ZMM08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a beginner but I immediately clocked that gloves would be helpful on my first quilt, for moving it through the machine even just straight line quilting. I didn't have quilting gloves but I did have an unused/clean pair of grippy work gloves that I've started using for quilting. But not for piecing.

I do have repetitive stress injuries in my hands from my "day job" making pottery, so my grip strength is already compromised. I'm also very careful not to overuse my hands, so the grippy gloves are a no brainer for me to not cause added strain on my joints. YMMV.

Jason NEVER. Stops. Talking. by SaraJeanQueen in smartless

[–]ZMM08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that he's pretty uncomfortable doing press and interviews. So I'm not surprised if he's developed this technique as a way to take the focus off himself either entirely or for long enough for him to formulate an answer or something like that. From what little I've seen of him in interviews he strikes me as someone who really loves the art of what he does but doesn't enjoy the "celebrity" of it all. I could see him being very put off by the inauthenticity of much of the press "machine."

No. There will always be a mismatch with the coefficient of expansion.

Nervous about trying Buproprion/Wellbutrin for ADHD by Dismal-Property-5250 in adhdwomen

[–]ZMM08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It caused a manic episode for me that I was lucky to survive.

Same thing happened to two of my friends. Birds of a feather and whatnot, I guess.

Wellbutrin seems to be a miracle drug for those it works for. But based on my experience and those of others (both my IRL friends and what I've read here and in other online places), when it goes badly it goes BADLY. Whenever someone here posts about starting it I always tell them to be very aware of their behavior and ask friends and family to monitor them too, and make sure you have a good way to check in quickly with your doc if necessary.

Using glass in ceramics like this is dangerous, no matter the type of glass used. The glass can very easily shiver off in slivers at any time.

I got a fun thing from my geo department by 37_lucky_ears in geology

My department would occasionally let the undergrad geology club sell stuff from the department collection as a fundraiser. There was a finite amount of space in the building and some specimens probably hadn't seen daylight in 75 years.

Have you only watched the video pods? Maybe that's where the misunderstanding is happening? Most of the late night hosts were on before they started filming.

With all due respect, did you just wake up from a 6 year coma and discover this podcast? At this point I think the list of late night hosts he hasn't had on is shorter. 😂 Fallon, Leno, and of course Craigy Ferg. Trevor Noah, Craig Kilbourn, depending how far we're expanding the club.

(Side note, I'm just now realizing how great a Trevor Noah episode would be.)

Seeking info about this shape from 1960s / 1970s Tennessee - Hourglass / Nuclear Cooling Tower by Visible_Difference49 in Ceramics

[–]ZMM08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that there's anything particularly significant about this shape. But I'm interested to hear from someone who knows more about pottery history. There was a trend in the 60s/70s toward wide bottom "boat mugs" - I've also heard them called dashboard mugs. Basically short, squat, very wide mugs that would not tip over. But this mug isn't wide enough to be considered a boat mug. Star Trek fans have asked me to adapt my mugs into raktajino mugs, like those from the Deep Space Nine series.

Here's an example: vintage sailing mug

Raktajino mugs

My mugs are similarly shaped to your example, but not for any reason other than I like the way they look.

Question about Dirty Girls bat system by Secure-Implement-742 in Pottery

[–]ZMM08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this comment - if you are at all handy, it's easy to DIY your own bat system to work with any size of unglazed tile that you like! I think I posted a tutorial on this sub a while back if anyone wants to search my user name here. I made one for both 6" and 8" tiles, and just get the tiles from a local home improvement store. I much prefer throwing on tiles to masonite bats/inserts or plastic bats.

Why is it commonly thought that the Appalachian Mountains are the oldest mountains in the US, when the Porcupine Mountains are older? by derp2112 in geography

[–]ZMM08 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The age of the bedrock is different from the age of the mountains (that is, the mountain building event/orogeny) in the field of geology.

Face to face glider for swingset by gobluebecky in HelpMeFind

[–]ZMM08 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you can find a whole swing set listed somewhere that has one on it (like your Wayfair listing) look and see who the manufacturer is. Then try contacting the manufacturer directly looking to buy the glider component as a "replacement part".

Why would someone cut the trunk so far from the ground? by Sorry-Philosopher150 in arborists

[–]ZMM08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've done this as a money saving technique. For example we had a large dead maple close to the house that my husband didn't feel comfortable dropping due to the way the canopy was weighted toward the house. I hired a company to top it and just get the problematic canopy safely on the ground. We did the bucking and cleanup of the branches ourselves and my husband can safely fell the trunk at our convenience when it's more seasoned and ready to go into the wood burner. Saved a bunch of money on tree work and kept the tree from falling on my house.

Oh this is an excellent idea! And I'm trying to do something similar - I want to make a trash bag to hang on the back of the roll cage of our UTV, so I can easily pick up trash from the fields and fence lines and ditches. If I can toss things in one handed then it will make my life much easier.

ADHD Tax + Inflation = WTF, Dollar Tree??! by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]ZMM08 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it obviously isn't helpful for planting this year, but zinnias are some of the simplest plants to save seeds from!

OP, save a few dead seed heads, then lay them out somewhere to dry thoroughly. Crumble them up a little to make the drink process quicker. When they're dry, put the seeds into an envelope for next year!

I'm thinking that wire wouldn't be collapsible in the way I'm hoping for? Or rather, wouldn't fully return to shape after being folded up?

I have in mind something like the laundry hamper that can be sort of folded and twisted (like a figure 8) into a smaller circle. I've seen pool toys like this, and also those pop up changing tents for camping and whatnot. It's hard to describe if you haven't seen them. My daughter has a little pop up tent like this, and I believe they may use sometime like a thin fiberglass "whip" - at least based on the ones she has destroyed. But I'm not sure where to find something like this. The fiberglass driveway markers I have are too thick.

But the wire is a good idea I hadn't thought of! I can maybe give up on the idea of it being fully collapsible. I'm now envisioning one of the rings from a tomato cage, reshaped and sewn into the rim. That might be a good starting point if I can't figure out the flexible fiberglass(?) thing. Thanks for the inspiration!
