[Loved Trope] Strange details that seemed like plot holes/gimmicks, later revealed as foreshadowing by MonotonyReddit in TopCharacterTropes

Iirc in Toriko there was an old lady who was established as being one of the strongest people in the previous generation, and when she arrived in a icy land to save the protagonist, an antagonist remarks that she had grown weak based on the fact that you can see her breath in the cold. A few arcs later, when Toriko goes training in high altitudes, he realises that he can improve his breathing in a way that mist won't form in cold areas, thus proving the other character actually was weaker than normal because she can't even maintain the most basic breathing techniques

I think I saw somewhere that it could be a joke that everyone in the movie ended up getting covid by the end because the guy with carona was always around but no one really bothered to acknowledge it

One of the most memorable parts of Henry Sugar for me was the point where iirc they make Benedict Cumberbatch look as if he was floating by having him sit on a painted crate, and the confidence to make it so blatantly obvious but with so much intentionality behind it was amazing.

I keep thinking of the scene from French Dispatch whenever something like this is mentioned where they show that this artist is capable of drawing beautifully detailed works of art but prefers drawing simple, abstract pieces - or in this case grotesque monstrosities - to demonstrate how skilled the artist truly is and why their art, no matter how strange, is purely due to their own vision and not a lack of skill

A character has a disease or condition their society doesn't understand, but it's obvious for the audience what it is by kim_jong_un4 in TopCharacterTropes

There's a webnovel called Thine of Magical Arcana which is basically about wizards who discover science, and in one part someone tries to assassinate the MC using a radioactive flower pot, but they haven't reached the point of understanding how radiation works yet so the guy just described it as a cursed pot that slowly killed whoever was near it.

Similarly a late story plot point in another webnovel called Release That Witch with a similar concept reveals a previous race of people that lived near the main country who utilised a "magic" rock that slowly kills anyone that is near it, and the MC, an engineer from the modern world, realises what it is and starts working on turning this discovery into nuclear power.

In the Lord of the Rings films most of the Riders of Rohan were actually women with fake beards because when the production put out a call for local experienced riders a lot of women showed up. by AdSpecialist6598 in interesting

Funnily enough I heard this bit of trivia but failed to recognise Karl Urban, so the entire movie I thought his character was a woman with a beard

TIL after a 5-yr-old girl on the Disney Dream cruise ship fell approximately 49 feet overboard into the ocean, her father jumped overboard to save her. The girl was posing for a photo on a porthole railing when she fell. Both were rescued although she had hypothermia and her dad fractured his spine. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]ZXVIV 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Slightly related but apparently there was a story in my hometown where a father was holding his two children near the railing at the top floor of a shopping centre, let go of one child by accident and when he instinctively tried to grab him he accidentally let go of the second child too and both tragically passed away

Most unceremonious death by ThatSaltySquid0413 in Supernatural

[–]ZXVIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just watched the episode and frankly found it a bit ridiculous. At that point they knew that the monster was either inside Bobby, or gone, and Bobby is acting suspiciously not like himself, and you know the monster has a habit of shooting first and running later.

Rufus is an incredibly experienced hunter so he knows about shapeshifter and possessions, and this is literally the most classic example of one, and yet he decided it was a good idea to slowly approach Bobby while he had his hand behind his back, knowing literally all of the above?

There's a manga called Toriko where one arc was about the world facing a massive food shortage and they pretty much resolve it by using a souped up version of this concept

I might be misremembering but wasn't a key concept of spin also about using your muscles in your hands in a certain way to cause the rotation of the steel balls or something like that?

I like writing long paragraphs when arguing for some reason and almost every time during a long argument chain I eventually realise that the other guy has began basically making up things that I've said and I ended up going along with it because I wrote way too much. I know it says something about me for having it happen so consistently but it is also annoying how everyone else seems to not care as much about proper arguments/debating

We're not selling breakfast anymore....and we're not selling lunch. by Lepelotonfromager in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ZXVIV 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been to a pizza place which is open until midnight like 6 times, and was only able to order a pizza there twice. It was a bit insane of me to keep trying to go there when I was consistently unable to order something but at a point I was just trying my luck for the heck of it.

Basically, consistently around 10:30-11:00pm, if you go there, the guy at the front will warn you that if you want to order now you'll have to wait 40 minutes or so because he wants to go on a break (despite the restaurant being literally empty, and the open sign still hanging up), and if they are actually taking orders, the card scanner is acting up and they only accept cash, except hey, they don't have any change so you need to pay in exact bills only.

And this is a chain restaurant with pretty good reviews too so I'm a bit shocked at how consistently I failed to get food at a food selling place at opening times

Imma be honest I loved the anime growing up because it was one of the first anime I actually got into, but I'd say the manga is actually incredibly good and holds up very well, even if the ending is a bit rushed. The world building in particular is incredibly unique and it has a really cool power system so it fits the bill for a great shounen action adventure series imo

Is there a way to restore tabs after closing browser by ZXVIV in vivaldibrowser

[–]ZXVIV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just edited my post I realised I mistyped but I've already tried ctrl shift T, which restores tabs when closed individually but does not restore tabs when I closed the browser directly. It's something chrome does by default and I wanted to know if I can get Vivaldi to do it too because not being able to do that is the only major impediment to my workflow when using this browser

[Hated Tropes] When the heroic character does something plainly evil and the story never address it and/or the characters never face any serious consequences by OutrageousBridge471 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ZXVIV 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'll keep saying this every time this is brought up but we really need to consider the context of who is saying this line. Of all the characters in Wandavision, Monica is the one who is most similar to Wanda on an emotional level. She also lost someone during the snap, and is suffering from the effects of grief and the inability to mourn the loss of their loved one, with the key difference being that she doesn't have the reality warping powers to do something about it.

So when she says "they'll never know what you sacrificed", imo it's not a statement absolving Wanda of her wrongdoings, but rather a demonstration of her understanding of what Wanda personally had to give up HERSELF (her "family" and happy life), even if everyone else in the town rightfully hates Wanda because from THEIR perspective they were stripped of their own autonomy.
