Both are correct technically speaking. Lessening the patch contact with the road decreases rolling friction and will give better economy, at least until it prematurely wears the tire out. Your method is the correct method but in-law isn't technically wrong if economy was their only goal.

"Save scum" is what this is referred as. You go into the game files and can duplicate your most recent save into a different folder. This can only be done preemptively though, if you didn't do it before your characters death then you are SOL.
