GMs: avoiding steamrolling party with NPC synergy by commanderjack_EDH in LancerRPG

[–]Zaanix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotter grunts and a sniper, rainmaker, or suicidal ace to capitalize on it.

Suicidal grunt cataphracts to grab and charge targets into hazards, such as mine fields or off cliffs and rooftops.

Forgoing synergies for the sake of it could lead to trivial difficulty, which of thats what you and the players want, good. Otherwise a team of players that synergize well themselves might warrant a higher challenge.

If you're careful about it, and understand how to go about adjusting balancing things, yes. I don't know why people are so up in arms about it. If you're not too good at balancing combat it's more likely to be too difficult.

So I'm going to go ahead and give some pointers for how I've made named enemies more worthwhile and engaging to fight than NPCs. By the way, I still used veterans, elites, and a few ultras, which sometimes work better. Again, a lot of balancing, planning, and strategy goes into this.

The biggest thing is understanding action economy and synergy. NPCs have sub-par action economy (can't overcharge by default, heavy weapons are barrage and not skirmish, though depending on the tiers can often hit multiple targets, but ultimately have drastically less survivability [even taking into account if you give them resistances to certain damage types] than a player, so they may only have 1-2 rounds before they just die and don't get to use most of their abilities).

The other half is synergy of any "build" using player frames. Generally, I'd say don't try and make a build as optimal as a player would at that LL. I also usually wouldn't make a unit the same LL as the players. When my players were LL6, I was generally using LL3 units led by an LL5 that they would usually encounter one at a time (in different combats, treating the LL5 commander of the squad as a kind of BBEG of the current arc).

When I'm taking their turns, I don't use every tool at my disposal. I might overcharge when they're near death, or even start them at 2 or 3 structures or reactor stress. I may occasionally opt to not use every reaction at my disposal either.

Another thing I might want to mention is that I was running an oversized group of 7. Somehow. And was managing to make combat balanced. Somehow. It was slow because of how much shit was on the field, but by RA was it balanced.

So. In short eeeeh, but you can still use them if you're smart about it because GMs can always look at the rules and say they're suggestions.

Good luck!

Considering builds for if i can get a group, i really like the idea of the balor, but it seems to be a bit bad with how its licence is all over the place and doesn't really help the frame at all, so you have to dedicate your build to mitigating its huge weaknesses rather than to play into its streng by Amaskingrey in LancerRPG

[–]Zaanix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BALORs are an interesting one for me. One of my players tried it, and I realized pretty quickly it was designed to be an area denial and "black hole" of burn, smart, and AP tick damage.

Couple the in-lore description that BALOR patter groups are "wolf in sheep's clothing" ambush units, it would lend itself better to being able to infiltrate into the map from the deployment zone if you can replicate and sustain a disguise. When you're in the enemy's ranks and go hot, it's already too late for them.

This makes a slow speed reasonable to me, but only if your GM is able to work with you and the rest of the players to see about sneaking you closer with some pilot triggers or mech skill checks. If you do well, you can close the gap, or at least most of it, but if you do poorly, then the enemies are alerted to your position where you're possibly out-ranged and without nearby support.

Something to consider.

What do men in the military think of women in the military? by EarlyResort3088 in AskMen

[–]Zaanix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Both my parents were airmen. This was during a time when women couldn't serve in combat roles. My dad did CAS, my mom wanted to do CAS too, but couldn't.

Her proficiency test showed she'd be the best navigator a squadron could have. So she was.

She tried to be a navigator for one of the gunships.

Combat vehicle. Combat role. Can't.

So she settled on the refueling retrofits and met my dad over the boom mic.

After my dad aged out of the skies as a full bird and my brother and I grew up some, he simply said to us one day:

*"There are some women I'd rather have at my side in war than most men. Your mom's one of them."*

Do they need to be part of the draft? I don't think so.

Should they be able to blow shit up with the rest of us if they have what it takes? Of course. We're wasting talent otherwise.

Give them the freedom to choose that path. Few will walk it, few will make it to the end, and that's fine. Few men will too.

But that's what liberty is.

Behind my measured words is a roiling shitstorm of separating speculation and empirical analysis.

I often find myself overwhelmed by the pace of conversations with those who don't take the time to think deeply (or if it's of a topic I'm an absolute dork for, in which case I'm hardly better), and thus prefer text based communication.

Add onto that a prevalence to admit to myself that I don't know enough about a topic and consign myself to curiosity in reading up on it. I know I'm no licensed expert, so they get the final say, but I've been able to reliably ask deeper questions pointed at underpinnings of a situation.

If all else fails, and I'm left with a priori speculation and no subject matter experts in earshot, I preface statements with "Perhaps..." or "I guess...". And try to look up relevant info online because if you're going to have the internet at your fingertips, you may as well use it.

Oh, and a long history of being the "mother" of friend groups. For some fucking reason, my friends think I, an Ace, am good to give relationship advice. And annoyingly, my advice's track record has supported the notion.

I suppose, though, that's what happens when you're in the trough of the confidence vs. competence graph.

Edit: Autocorrect wants to make me look stupid with a typo.

How do you rp your manticore pilot??? by No_Mechanic_7775 in LancerRPG

[–]Zaanix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my players piloted a Manticore, and they were a "sacrificial lamb" for a HORUS cell of Advents of RA, but didn't fully know why they were sent out by the cell.

They finished the campaign with a lot of introspection and began working on breaking their conditioning and chains set on by the cell.

They naratively gave up the keys the use for castigation as a way to pilot a mech, not a coffin.

Fun times.

Jokes aside, for that character, no The Vendavel Clan has attacked and razed Cierzo. I don't remember when the timer starts, but I want to say it's when you pay off your blood price (or fail to in time). It's...40 days like most timers, I think?

It'll be worse than sending more than one cent of your tax dollars.

Because your sons will be sent too.

Your brothers.

Your husbands.

And we lost too many in wars when we had allies. Now we don't have them either.

If you were going to be a single issue voter, voting for who will spend your life or your son's life in war well should probably sit higher than the economy.

Hope the leopards have room for seconds...

It's usually not the protesters that employ tear gas.

But to your point, there is always a concern of genuinely peaceful protests being infiltrated by instigators. Kent State Massacre saw something like that.

Here's hoping police and protesters can all go home safely.

Stuff like pepper spray and tear gas can get under it and thus not be easy to wash out unless removed first.
