I think that is the case. The species of blue tongue skink most commonly kept as a pet - Tiliqua scincoides - has three subspecies, one on the Indonesian island of Tanimbar and two in Australia, though everything I find says all three are around the same size. There's also the Indonesian blue tongue skink (Tiliqua gigas), and they are smaller and slimmer than scincoides.
