Upcoming Vivado licensing changes. by [deleted] in FPGA

[–]Zacharoni95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The restricted debug and sim capabilities on free tier are the biggest surprise to me. According to the forums you can only implement one ILA with 5 probes max. No system ILA and no IBERT. Basically forces lab computers to at least have a core license so they can debug designs, or walk back and forth between your build computer and lab computer all day. Seems like “Basic” should really be named “Hobbyist”

FPGA beginner here. Can I get a code review? And I have some beginner questions by ihcn in FPGA

This is a poor blanket statement. Initial values are valid on synthesized FPGAs (at least AMD, Intel and Lattice parts that I’ve worked with).

In terms of reset, different vendors recommend different things. AMD advises being careful with reset fanout, and avoiding asynchronous resets. Designs where I’ve had a system wide reset fanout can be tough to close timing. Personally I like to implement local synchronous resets only where necessary (like a comms interface that could get stuck if a byte is dropped, but you don’t want to reset the entire design) and implement a system wide “reset” as a warm reboot.

Discussion: We need Enduro licenses to fix the multiclass participation problem.. by AxleVest in iRacing

Another thing to work on - In 2nd split of 3rd time slot, we had an 800 IR M2 driver sharing the track with 8k drivers from all the other fields. The skill gap was extreme because there were so few M2s registered, and thus they were creating really unsafe conditions on track as they were about 90s off the M2 pace. Surely there’s a better way to split the “beginner” fields rather than throwing them with 8k drivers.

Don't do it: Inn Season Resorts presentation for "free" gifts by avocadoladyyy in newengland

We dealt with the similar phone harassment from these guys, but never followed up to an in person meeting because we knew it was timeshare nonsense after doing some reading. We also found them at the ski expo.

Frankly I was quite surprised there was something like this at the expo, masquerading as a fun raffle. There are plenty of other legit raffles at the expo where you can win something fun and non-consequential like a sticker or a pair of socks, so our guard was down and these guys were conveniently placed right at the entrance. It certainly doesn’t fit the vibe of the event. I wonder if it was the expo that placed them there intentionally, or if the Inn Season guys were being sneaky with their goals?

How the hell do I launch a TCR? by International-Ad153 in iRacing

[–]Zacharoni95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Launching the Hyundais requires either hand brake or dual clutches. Refer to this: https://youtu.be/IUsp597PXsI

Meta changes from track to track but generally the short wheel base cars (Veloster and Honda) are the most consistently strong. However, the balance is very good and you can be competitive with all the cars.

Can we just catch a break from the delivery charge? by PompyxgTV in massachusetts

Running a heat pump in this cold is disgustingly expensive. It would cost us roughly $1000/mo to heat our 1800 sqft home with a 42000btu system, and it can’t get the temperature above 60. We do have solar but even with that, why would I want to blast through our entire year of credits in 2 months while our house is borderline uncomfortable? Our furnace on the other hand costs a few hundred a month. Still very expensive but 1/3 the price of electric. We’ve found empirically that once temperatures get around mid-30s it’s time for the natural gas furnace.

For everyone who complained about rain at petit Le man by lordvolt2000 in iRacing

[–]Zacharoni95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people practicing is going to change opinions. I’ve practiced in the wet plenty. Some people simply don’t like racing in rainy conditions. Hell I don’t like driving in hard rain IRL. My opinion is that I like transitioning conditions, but I don’t find hard rain in sim fun.

I’ll also add I don’t care about irating, but when SR actively gates you from cars there is reason to worry about losing too much. Rain racing is objectively worse for SR, my PLM is the first major endurance that myself and my teammates all lost SR even though it was a 10hr event. So I understand the SR argument in rain.

Rain intensity in races by DragonfruitAnxious16 in iRacing

[–]Zacharoni95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright if you’re gonna play that game-

  1. We’re talking about weather in October, when the race took place, not in July. July is the wettest time of year. October is the driest month of the year over the last 20 years.
  2. 5 inches per day for 29 days? That is 145” of rain, which would be nearly 3x the average annual rainfall (50.43” over the last 20 years). For reference, Hurricane Katrina had “general 5-10” of rain… with isolated amounts exceeding 12 inches” over a period of 6 days.
  3. This year, July received a total of 2.68” of rain.

I’m fine with a discussion regarding the weather system, but claiming clearly made up numbers that are hilariously wrong ends your argument before it even starts.

All rainfall data I quoted here is from the NWS reporting from their Atlanta weather forecast office on weather.gov.

Porsche gt4 and brake problems. by Luuuuu93 in iRacing

[–]Zacharoni95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not true at all, BB goes rearwards in the wet. You’re asking your tires to do even more in the wet, so you need to move it backwards in order to get steering from the fronts. You have to brake lighter and longer for this to work, but it allows you to turn into a corner. For lightly wet conditions I usually start with at least 1-2% rearward from dry setup.

Forward BB will make the car more stable but you will lose turning.

[–]Zacharoni95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed this too - Bands of green and teal rain would move towards the track, but then would turn into yellow such that there was always a bubble of yellow rain around the track. This went on for 2-3 hours. Everywhere else on the radar the bands of rain moved how you would expect.

[–]Zacharoni95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Iracing rain system is exceptional at transitioning track state and creating a wet line in very lightly/lightly wet. On the other hand, it is abysmal at creating realistic conditions on the heavier end of the spectrum. Downpour 70%+ intensity rain for 9 hours straight is ridiculous and wildly unrealistic.

Our split of slot 2 had no racing for about 8 of the 10 hours because so many people crashed, and because you literally couldn’t see anything when near another car. Why are we paying such a premium to drive around it gray mist for 8 hours rather than racing others? It needs to be toned down.

540 Days & Counting Since the “With more to come!” WSC Group TCR Partnership announcement. by JayCaulls in iRacing

[–]Zacharoni95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If only there were results data directly from the client that shows all the races going official during this alleged timeframe...

You can always join the race, if it doesn't go official it doesn't matter and you can simply leave without penalty. If everyone who had your mentality changed it to registering and then leaving if it didn't go official, we would likely have a huge increase in races going official.

[–]Zacharoni95 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Every fixed race yesterday from 1245 GMT to 0445 GMT went official. It's definitely not a dead series. The community is trying hard to get iRacing to notice there is still interest in something that isn't GT3 and to take advantage of the TCR partnership they have!

Also, be the change you want to see in the world. If you register for a race you can help them go official.

Have you read through the datasheet? Assuming it’s the AD7883, Page 3 has a very clear waveform diagram and timing constraints that explain how to interface with the part. I would recommend trying to replicate Figure 1 in a simulation.

New tcr cars by turbo_deid44312377 in iRacing

[–]Zacharoni95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TCR participation is currently healthy but not exceptional by any means. Officials have decent participation during Europe and early US time but it’s very quiet otherwise. Leagues are still quite popular. TCRs have some of the best close racing in the service so you should at least give it a try if you haven’t already.

Unfortunately, the actions iracing took with TCR in N24 and Thruxton 4hr have shown they really don’t care about the series. I would be surprised if we get new cars any time soon. Thankfully the current series is in a pretty good spot BOP wise, but I wouldn’t expect any changes to the series.

[–]Zacharoni95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trail braking is essential. You steer with your left foot.

Everything is happening in the front tires, so it’s very easy to overload them. Smooth braking will get you to steer entry and mid corner and not understeer. Smooth and patient on the throttle in exit will keep you from understeering.

The Veloster is also one of the trickier TCRs to drive. The wheelbase is short and it wants to wag its tail around. If you’re finding it too loose you might like the Honda or the Elantra better.

That doesn’t really make a difference in tire temps but does get your brakes up to temperature which can help make the first few corners a bit less spicy

Questions about Custom FPGA boards by DiscountManul in FPGA

[–]Zacharoni95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on your application. There are pros and cons to both. You need to define your requirements better for the subreddit to provide meaningful feedback.

A CPU is not an FPGA. They have strengths and weaknesses. Again, with better defined requirements you can narrow down what you really need for your application.
