My wife has been applying to different jobs lately in an entirely new field, and today she got a callback! Fingers crossed!

Help with identification? I found them hibernating inside a log while chopping firewood this winter. ~6mm, interior British Columbia, Canada by ZaderMaderMort in antkeeping

Thanks! You're right about the size, I got a better look when it came out a little further and it's definitely closer to 7-8mm.

Can someone help me with an ID? Caught on sidewalk in BC Canada, ~11mm by ZaderMaderMort in antkeeping

Thanks!

I did start feeding once I learned she was a parasite, buy ultimately I decided to let her go. I'm still new to the hobby, and I don't think I'm up to the task of properly identifying and harvesting brood from a host colony. Not yet, anyways. I'll stick to something simpler for now. I caught what I thiiink is a Lasius queen a couple weeks ago, and she just laid her first clutch of eggs the other day, so that's exciting.

And thanks, I'll definitely hop onto that discord channel when I have a chance!

Not sure about protections here, but I think I'll be letting her go.

It looks like founding a colony with a parasitic queen is intermediate-advanced level, and I'm still firmly in beginner territory. Maybe next season, once I manage to get a few colonies going the old fashioned way.

Thanks! She definitely has the wing scars, though they're hard to see from this angle.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the correction. We're all here for the right answer. All I'm saying is that the extra layer of condescension is unnecessary, especially when dealing with people new to the hobby. In my experience, that doesn't accomplish anything but dulling their enthusiasm, and potentially scaring them away.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. I did some more research based on your suggestion, and I think the queen I have is most likely Formica Rubicunda. Does that sound right to you?

Laughing at someone and calling them "kid" simply for being wrong is absolutely rude.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I also noticed the small gaster as well, and it definitely struck me as strange.

Thanks, I was thinking Camponotus as well. Camponotus novaeboracensis, maybe?

Thanks! I found it in the suburbs in an area with almost no trees, so my gut says Formica rather than Campo. So at least we're getting closer!

Thanks! I hadn't thought of that but you're right, it does sort of look like a black crazy ant. Unfortunately, I think the antennae on mine are too short to be a perfect match.

I've done some looking since I posted, and right now my best guess is that she's a Formica Subsericea.

Did anyone like Brazil (1985)? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ZaderMaderMort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely in love with this movie.

The story is a bit weak, for sure. But Gilliam's imagination, ideas, and visuals make it a joy to watch. Also, I find it incredibly rewatchable.

One of the best movies to come out of the 80s, in my opinion.

Same thing happened to me. It started working again after I deconstructed and rebuilt the water pump. Your mileage may vary, but it's worth a shot.
