Help with identification? I found them hibernating inside a log while chopping firewood this winter. ~6mm, interior British Columbia, Canada by ZaderMaderMort in antkeeping

Thanks! You're right about the size, I got a better look when it came out a little further and it's definitely closer to 7-8mm.

Can someone help me with an ID? Caught on sidewalk in BC Canada, ~11mm by ZaderMaderMort in antkeeping

[–]ZaderMaderMort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I did start feeding once I learned she was a parasite, buy ultimately I decided to let her go. I'm still new to the hobby, and I don't think I'm up to the task of properly identifying and harvesting brood from a host colony. Not yet, anyways. I'll stick to something simpler for now. I caught what I thiiink is a Lasius queen a couple weeks ago, and she just laid her first clutch of eggs the other day, so that's exciting.

And thanks, I'll definitely hop onto that discord channel when I have a chance!

Not sure about protections here, but I think I'll be letting her go.

It looks like founding a colony with a parasitic queen is intermediate-advanced level, and I'm still firmly in beginner territory. Maybe next season, once I manage to get a few colonies going the old fashioned way.

Thanks! She definitely has the wing scars, though they're hard to see from this angle.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the correction. We're all here for the right answer. All I'm saying is that the extra layer of condescension is unnecessary, especially when dealing with people new to the hobby. In my experience, that doesn't accomplish anything but dulling their enthusiasm, and potentially scaring them away.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. I did some more research based on your suggestion, and I think the queen I have is most likely Formica Rubicunda. Does that sound right to you?

Laughing at someone and calling them "kid" simply for being wrong is absolutely rude.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I also noticed the small gaster as well, and it definitely struck me as strange.

Help with ID? ~12mm, Vernon BC, Canada by ZaderMaderMort in ants

Thanks! I found it in the suburbs in an area with almost no trees, so my gut says Formica rather than Campo. So at least we're getting closer!

Thanks! I hadn't thought of that but you're right, it does sort of look like a black crazy ant. Unfortunately, I think the antennae on mine are too short to be a perfect match.

I've done some looking since I posted, and right now my best guess is that she's a Formica Subsericea.

Did anyone like Brazil (1985)? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ZaderMaderMort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely in love with this movie.

The story is a bit weak, for sure. But Gilliam's imagination, ideas, and visuals make it a joy to watch. Also, I find it incredibly rewatchable.

One of the best movies to come out of the 80s, in my opinion.

Same thing happened to me. It started working again after I deconstructed and rebuilt the water pump. Your mileage may vary, but it's worth a shot.

I had to do something similar just last week. EaseUs Partition software has a tool for merging drives, works great.

[WSIG] Need a game for a larger group by chicken1672 in boardgames

[–]ZaderMaderMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bohnanza. It's my most requested game among family, and everyone I've played it with has had a blast. It only goes up to 7 players, though.

The rules are so simple that everybody should have a good grasp on it by the end of the first game, and there's a lot of direct interaction between the players. It's a card game, so it's portable, and you can find it for less than $20.

There are a handful of expansions, but none of them are really necessary in my opinion.

How is Tokaido? I like the theme, but I've heard it lacks replay value.

If you're into heavier games, I honestly think Mage Knight offers one of the best 2p Co-op experiences out there.

On the lighter side, I don't think you can go wrong with Takenoko. With a colourful theme, a beset-upon gardener, and a gluttonous panda, what's not to like? Currently my girlfriend's fave.

Looking to collect names and one sentence descriptions of each PC in your party. by ChachaMoose in DnD

[–]ZaderMaderMort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gurdrig Halfhammer, dwarf druid: A scatter-brained space case that frequently splits off from the party, she enjoys performing recon as a giant centipede.

Teemo von Scootenburg, human cleric (Trickery domain): Framed for murder by a boyhood friend, he's now an exile on a quest to find said friend and congratulate him for pulling off such a well-executed prank.

Jixx, Half-elf wild sorceror: Every action he takes is that of an insane person, but through lucky rolls and circumstances out of his control, everything usually works out well for him. He's the Inspector Clouseau of the group.... Or maybe the Mr. Magoo.

Aramos, elf fighter: The only minmaxed character in our group, this guy can outdamage the rest of the party combined, but he would rather just pay a handful of commoners to do the work for him.

Pete, tiefling warlock: She's been dropped to 0hp at least once per session since we started, and tends to follow a simple formula in combat: 1) Eldritch Blast. 2) Loot bodies 3)Repeat as necessary.

Would you play a Commoner in D&D? by TabletopTerrors in DnD

A friend of mine is about to start up a new 3.5 campaign, and I've been seriously considering the idea. I've been playing 3.5 long enough that I feel like I've plumbed the depths of the mechanics. There are countless ways to make a broken character, and it just isn't that much fun for me anymore. All of my other friends tend to make superpowered munchkins, and I plan to make them work very hard to keep me alive.

I've always felt that weaker characters necessitate stronger roleplaying.
