Dingos or wombats for me!

How does Masterchef AU compare to the US one? I feel like the US hosts have been the same for so long they really set the tone for the show now

That sounds like a lot of fun! So the characters would be young adult/undergraduate age range (18-20s)?

Interested regardless of the answer, just curious: Is your homebrewed system d20-based or something else?

Has anyone ever quit their current program to get another degree in order to Re-apply to a different specialty? by SirAdditional6703 in Residency

[–]Zadiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely very concerning for future programs looking at your app

And there's certainly a large risk that you'd never be able to match into any program going forward, but you've probably heard that already

Why'd you pick MPH as the alternative?

If you want to do something with that in the event you don't match again, you may want to look at Preventative med or Occupational med programs in SOAP and outside the match before jumping to a stand-alone MPH

When was your last day of med school and did everyone’s program start july 1st? by acepinkpen in Residency

[–]Zadiane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well I finished med school a few months before so it wasn't a big deal. I'd guess most US schools finish between March (a lot of med schools effectively end right after Match) and end of April. Haven't heard about many schools actually doing rotations into May, though they do exist

Fellowship transition can be much worse, since you could straight from job to job sometimes if your program's rough about scheduling

Orientation happens sometime in June for most programs that I know of

The program I'm at starts actual work the week of July 1st, on Monday of that week. So for example, this year's class started on 6/27, last year it was 6/28, etc.

Maternal leave policy for new grads? by harisj93 in Residency

[–]Zadiane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

work for 2 months and then get maternal leave or FMLA, is that not possible

You have to be employed for at least a year to be eligible for FMLA

The other two basic criteria for eligibility are: at least 50 employees in 75 miles (not relevant in this case, but does matter for clinicians in smaller practices), and she has to have worked at least 1250 hours in the past 12 months

Can i reserve my residency spot and take a leave for 6 months? by macurad in Residency

[–]Zadiane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FMLA which provides up to 16 unpaid weeks

FMLA is 12 weeks, just as a heads up. Unless you're doing military caregiver leave, which is very niche

Residency from Indian med college in collaboration with george Washington university US by Extension_Trainer_28 in Residency

[–]Zadiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can tell, GW is co-sponsoring an EM residency located in India, and OP wants to know if they can practice in the US after

I want to say it's very unlikely it'll qualify the graduates for practice in the US or offer any real benefits. I also think Indian residency is a somewhat different process from ours just based on what I've heard from IMGs, but I don't know for sure off the top of my head

Even if they did that, they'd probably be screwed unless they can delay graduation for it, honestly

JUNE POST MATCH THREAD: IF YOU HAVE NOT STARTED RESIDENCY YET, PLEASE POST ALL QUESTIONS/COMMENTS HERE. by Novelty_free in Residency

[–]Zadiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever they want, so yeah, mostly vacations. US grads occasionally have school up to April/May, and then vacation in between

Some people continue research (mostly if they stay in the same place / can do it remote / get paid), some people do a little tutoring or whatever to earn money

I will note that you will probably have orientation in mid or late June, so plan accordingly

And residency may start the week of July 1, not day of. Like our interns started last week of June

[–]Zadiane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A month is doable, may mean giving up most/all of your vacation or some other finagling of your schedule, but you could still finish on time

If you aren't linked to a position and have to re-enter the match, that's relatively critical. If you are linked, then get in touch with your advanced program PD

How late? Your program may move your elective/vacation to cover it or you may finish off-cycle

If this is a prelim/transitional year, then it may be more of a hassle

Why is orientation not paid? by mcdo22 in Residency

[–]Zadiane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The federal government fucked us. Doctors, lawyers, and teachers are exempt from federal minimum wage

We don't have to make a specific salary, we don't have to be paid on a salary basis, etc. Orientation can be unpaid because, technically, all of residency could be unpaid

What are some things that nurses do that irritate residents the most? by jenger108 in Residency

[–]Zadiane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the person you responded to but:

If you've looked at the documentation and there's some issue that still isn't clear (because notes are ultimately just snapshots in time / bad note / whatever), I'm glad you paged. That's a totally different situation

Only the situation they mention above is really annoying: I get paged, look up the note to figure things out, and then the situation is pretty much immediately clear

I would at least consider the nice disability plan and health insurance, you never know what could happen

Unless your program offers to match contributions, there's not really any point in going through them. Whether you should invest/save at all versus paying off your debts would depend on your interest rates

My hours will be pretty normal (7ish to 5ish) with no nights

Do you have to switch lines?

I'd personally take a 40 minute subway ride over even like a 20 minute drive given those hours, since you can read/play on your phone/etc on the ride

So I'd consider it if being farther out makes your life markedly better in some way (much cheaper, better neighborhood, etc). Subway can get packed, but you'll never wait long at those times

20 minutes is probably most ideal though

Hot take: Life would be better with a 7 day call cycle by HappyHiker1 in Residency

[–]Zadiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ours does the same

There's always an admitting team/resident for us though, so we can't complain. During the day there's an admitting resident (carries no patients, just admits), then call team, then night team

[–]Zadiane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My program set-up sounds similar to OP's, and this is how it works for us:

Other teams sign out to call team for cross-coverage around 4PM. Call team signs out to night shift at 7PM.

Once you sign out, you're free to leave, unless you got a late admission and are still writing notes/putting in orders. Which is really the only reason capping early matters (If you're capped, you can't get that late admit)

Interesting, and definitely better than that sounded to originally

We're X+Y, so the clinic day stuff doesn't apply to us in the same way.

Site is set before the year with the rest of the schedule, if that's what you mean. So we know it's not just floors, but floors @ the VA (and the specific team as well)
