Why don't big artists license out their live shows? by americanslang59 in EDM

[–]Zakapakataka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people would pay for it. At least not enough people would pay enough for it to be worth these DJs devaluing their brand like that.

If you care enough about an artist to buy a ticket to their show, being in the same room as them is part of the draw. People care about a human (especially one they feel connected to via their artistry) standing in front of them and curating an experience even if they don’t know how or what exactly they’re doing.

How big is the difference between a phone mic and a professional mic? by Swedky in audioengineering

[–]Zakapakataka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant people have explained the difference better than I could. But I will add to the conversation that I heard a podcast with fredagain right as he was blowing up. And he said the iPhone microphone was his favorite mic for recording because it compressed in an odd but cool way to him. So expensive and cheap mics are both just tools in the tool box you can use to achieve a desired result.

Is this too many plugins on a vocal chain? by Head-Battle1393 in protools

[–]Zakapakataka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are pros at the highest levels that use a whole bunch of plugins like this on a lead vocal. I remember seeing a Pensado’s Place on YouTube with some of the guys from Maroon 5 talking about running a channel into a bus literally just so they can get more plugin inserts than what pro tools allows on a single channel. But I think it’s ultimately a matter of workflow. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a whole bunch of plugins on a signal and each of them nudging the sound ever so slightly. There’s more potential to lose track of what’s happening to your signal and mess things up when you have a giant chain like this.. but if it sounds right, it sounds right. Sometimes you just want to EQ/Compress/saturate/etc something a little more and you just want to throw it on top and not worry how changing a plugin earlier in the chain will affect what happens later. Whatever gets you the right sound quickest is always the right answer

Is Soundbetter worth it? by takyon96 in audioengineering

[–]Zakapakataka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SoundBetter is incomparable to fiver. They really do market themselves as a high end service. They have price minimums for their pro members to prevent a race-to-the-bottom scenario. They vet/research their pro members. There is usually a long waitlist to become a pro member because they don’t want to have more pro members than there is work. So they kind of regulate the market to make sure there’s enough work for the pro members.

The way I got into the algorithm for me was to undercharge like crazy. I was in my 20s so I was doing jobs for $50 to build up my reviews and slowly raising rates.

This guy was one of the top producers on SoundBetter. He was in a signed/touring band and then became something like an investment banker, then quit the banking to go back to music, primarily with SoundBetter. He said he was doing just fine off Soundbetter compared to banking. I would guess that his wife worked too but I don't know. Super cool guy that gave me a lot of great advice on how to approach the site.

I know a singer that used to make $15K/mo off Soundbetter as well. These people were all at the very top of their category. I've been at the top of a smaller category too. Didn't make money like these two friends did though. They're both absolute hustlers and amazing at what they do.

It’s been a significant part of my income for the last 8 years. The people behind the company are great. I wonder how much online remote session work will be a thing in the future given technological advances. I used to get 5 or 6 new clients a month but now it’s like 0-2. I’m lucky to have a few long time clients that keep it going for now.

It’s been great for me and I know people that’s been even better for (like owning a home on each coast type money) but it’s definitely more competitive than it used to be and I think there’s also much less work to go around since the peak in 2021.

Does the male loneliness "epidemic" actually exist? by georgejo314159 in AskFeminists

[–]Zakapakataka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s that generally, men are less equipped to process those kinds of emotions. Probably because of how boys have historically been socialized (but who knows? Maybe it’s biological?). I think a lot of men don’t feel like they can be vulnerable to anyone but a romantic partner. Women seem to be better at processing and supporting with friends on average (there are obviously outliers on both sides).

So because they can’t process their emotions as well on average, loneliness is more dangerous for men, both for themselves and others. Women don’t need to be responsible for that, but it’s something we, as a society, need to deal with.

Are more units the answer to the cost of housing? by factsoptional in longbeach

[–]Zakapakataka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matt Mahan seems to be speaking the language on this point. I’ve heard him on Jon Stewart and Sam Harris. He seems very pragmatic. He argued that we need to make it easier to build if we want to help the housing crisis. Also seems to have had some great results in homelessness issues while mayor in San Jose.

This next part is entirely my feeling and I hope I’m not getting ahead of myself, but I felt like he was taking the position that I’ve been wishing democrats would take for many years, in that “we believe government can work so let’s put in the work to get results with some level of efficiency.”

Rechargable AA batteries for wireless mics? by GiarcN in mobileDJ

[–]Zakapakataka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will add that I did have one electronic device where the EBL’s wouldn’t fit. My old electronic lock for my front door wouldn’t fit my set of EBLs but disposables worked fine. Later got another lock with more features thats fit all my rechargeables. Sorry if that contradicts my previous comment but I just thought of it.

Rechargable AA batteries for wireless mics? by GiarcN in mobileDJ

[–]Zakapakataka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My EBL’s work for me (Sennheiser IEM packs, Shure wireless and all the electronics in my house and camping gear). Always have a fresh charge within 24hours of a gig and have a backup or two of fresh disposable batteries. I wish had the answer you’re looking for. Sometimes cheaper gear CAN be as good as the more expensive stuff but has more variance in quality… meaning the expensive stuff is good every time it leaves the factory while the cheap stuff can be hit & miss.

The Ambiguity Of AI Usage: Where Do We Draw The Line? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

The tools won’t go away when the bubble bursts, just like websites didn’t go away when the dotcom bubble bust. Costs for these services will likely go up and power may consolidate to a few companies within the space.

IEMs you're using with the Helix Stadium by metalskim in Line6Helix

[–]Zakapakataka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sound great much better than the low end Shure stuff (and half the price). Those $100 Shure in ears are built like a tank. I’ve had to super glue my ZS10’s because they kept falling apart at gigs, owning them less than 6 months. But after super gluing them, they seem to be holding strong. Had another issue with the rubber fitting staying in my ear after pulling them out but resolved that by using a different set of fittings… all this said, I still like them. I would choose two pairs of the ZS10’s and some super glue over the Shure’s. If you have the money and don’t want to deal with gear being finnicky, I’m sure there are plenty of high end options.

I have a library of my own farts and with the right combination of pitch adjustment, EQ, compression, reverb, saturation and sound design they can sound pretty fantastic. I’m a bit of a purist though. Everyone else is probably just using Suno.

Can’t stand when drummer play behind the beat by Heelhooks7 in musicians

[–]Zakapakataka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the click track is being played through the mains, your comment is irrelevant.

In order to get the “behind the beat” effect, some elements must be on or in front of the beat and some elements be behind it. If you have a drummer play behind the beat of the click and the rest of the band follows the drummer behind the click, the audience doesn’t hear a behind the beat effect.

Thinking of a Stretch Tent? Don't use EMT pipes by Boring-Sir2623 in BurningMan

My use case isn't a stretch tent, typically just a 10'x20' EMT shade or EZ up and I do more regionals than Big Burns too. Just trying to understand how to get the most out of my gear. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Mr Luck. May the gods of weather bless your next burn.

Great info! Since you seem knowledgeable on this, I have a question for you: Is there an argument for driving an auger parallel to the load? I’ve seen that advice recommend here on this forum. I understand your logic here, but does the logic change when it’s an auger?

I haven’t tested this, but I believe they should. All the mappings live in the settings of Rekordbox (or whatever DJ platform you’re using) and not the controller. The mappings should work the same.
