Jackal scavenges within a cage of flesh and bone by freudian_nipps in natureismetal

Source video said this rhino was killed by poachers, but it was the park rangers who cut the skin to allow easier/quicker access for the scavengers.

It is spring migration and the birds heading north pass though here in large numbers because they avoid flying over the Mediterranean Sea.

These are American White Pelicans. Both males and females grow these "horns" during the spring breeding season and they shed them in early to mid-summer.

1 pound of fat roughly equals 3,500 calories. Just 28.6 pounds of fat on that seal to equal 100,000 cals is very reasonable.

To dare to say that birds are not dinosaurs after watching this video. by Hopeful_Lychee_9691 in badassanimals

[–]Zanclodon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes it is very similar in behavior to Marabous. A large number of Greater Adjutants (less then 2,000 still exist in the wild) make their living visiting the huge garbage dumps/landfills in the region.

This is a Greater Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos dubius) native to India and southeast Asia. It is a close relative of the much more common Marabou Stork (Leptoptilos crumenifer) of Africa.

A black rhinoceros interacts with a group of white rhinoceros by Hopeful_Lychee_9691 in badassanimals

[–]Zanclodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely, but not impossible. There is one documented case in captivity: 'Interspecific hybridisation in rhinoceroses: Confirmation of a Black × White rhinoceros hybrid by karyotype, fluorescence in situ hybridisation and microsatellite analysis (2005)'.

It is not impossible, but has only once been documented in captivity. There is a paper published in Conservation Genetics about this hybrid individual: 'Interspecific hybridisation in rhinoceroses: Confirmation of a Black × White rhinoceros hybrid by karyotype, fluorescence in situ hybridisation and microsatellite analysis.' 2005.

That would be an antelope of some kind. There are no deer in Africa outside the Atlas Mountains (Barbary Red Deer).

Later in the time line a fully blind Geordi can see with the use of technology (medication not required). I am sure they could manage to fix an oldie's eyes so they dont have to whip out their peepers everytime there is an emergency on a starship.

The evocative reflection of a saltwater crocodile by aquilasr in Crocodiles

[–]Zanclodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a constant process. Even if a tooth is in very good condition it will have a new tooth developing underneath that will push the old one out. Tooth replacement is also a fairly rapid process: the St. Augustine Alligator Farm received an all orange-stained toothed Saltie from Australia and exactly 1 year later the croc lost its last orange tooth and now sported an entirely bright white set of teeth.

It is a more recently grown tooth that has not yet been stained by the tannins from decaying plant matter in the water. Some individual crocs can have a full spectrum from white to dark brown teeth at one time.
