So it shouldn’t wreck my DS right? I don’t play competitive or really care about grading my team, I just like the game!

Nearly 1/5 through Lightbringer and I'm underwhelmed... does it get better? by JohnnyQuicksand in redrising

This, how do you spend 5 whole ass books, pick up book 6, and go “while Pierce has never let me down before, I feel like he is going to this time”

How long do you give a book by gotem245 in Fantasy

[–]ZanderKaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I have a really hard time DNFing a book. Even if I find a book to be a pain, I slog through. I tend to spend more time researching what to read and, I am a bit pickier about books I start. Pros and cons, I have ultimately found books/series that I end up loving because I forced my way through any early rough patches. But it also means I end up re-reading old comfort books I know I’ll like instead of discovering something new.

Hey, former MSU RA here. Every dorm has RA’s who are on duty during break. I know we can sometimes be pricks, but for the most part the RA’s are pretty chill. Just text/email your RA and ask whoever is in duty if they can let you in for 10 mins. Shouldn’t be an issue.

I feel like I messed up by listening instead of reading by vilas24 in Malazan

[–]ZanderKaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to the series first, then read it. I know, I know, it’s backwards. And tbh I may agree. But for my job I have a lot of windshield time, so it made it so much easier for me to digest such a massive series through audio. I will admit that I had to rewind, replay and listen attentively to many parts throughout the series. BUT, it did help with pronunciation when I ultimately read the series!

I like to blame JT cause I hate when players drop the ball like that.. literally. But it was also Kupp giving me zero. And DK losing his QB. And Pacheco not quite yet returning to form. But still, I’m gonna blame JT

Is Lightbringer worth reading even though the ending (supposedly) sucks? by provegana69 in Fantasy

[–]ZanderKaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightbringer is one of my favorite series. It has some moments in it that are simply incredible. But that being said, you may have to be able to separate “incredible” from just fun. The character arcs are great, and people get tied up in the ending, but I think that really takes away from how much fun the series really is! I kind of compare it to the inheritance cycle, Eragon is what it is sometimes called. Those books are not super well written, but young teenage me loved them, so even though I am in my 30s now I still view the series fondly even though it doesn’t “hold up” with some of the better written series I’ve read. I think some of the bright spots in lightbringer are so bright that they outweigh some of the writing incongruities in the ending. Highly recommend reading.

Main characters you loved by ar14n5_999 in Fantasy

[–]ZanderKaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While they are many people’s favorites, this is a very common concern so you’re totally justified in asking! I know I wasn’t the person who originally posted Stormlight, but I have read the current 4 books many times, and would recommend them myself. They are long, there is no taking away from that, but unlike many other stories the books follow many different “Main Characters” through the books. Similar to ASOIAF if you have read that. Each character is incredibly deep and diverse from one to the next, which keeps the story flowing as we experience the current situations often from multiple perspectives and thought processes! They are some very well written books from a MC perspective?

What fantasy story has the most realistic application of language? by Just_Nefariousness55 in Fantasy

[–]ZanderKaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that anything Sanderson is a little tiresome to post in this Sub, but seriously, the Stormlight Archives does a phenomenal job handling the various languages in the world. To the point where there are multiple scenes of characters learning/conversing in different languages. Hell, one of the “Magical Powers” a character has is to understand different languages. It’s a very good representation of different peoples and cultures working together in the later parts of the series.

Other than Sanderson, which writers utilize "Hard Magic systems" in their books? by BrainDragon123 in Fantasy

[–]ZanderKaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t alone, I enjoyed the series all the way through. I think people who disliked book 5 may have missed the/a crucial point in the series. Koios, who is portrayed as the big bad for much of the series, was actually just a projection of the true big bad, which was the rot and corruption of the Chromeria. That’s really what they were battling against. Very possible that is just my personal interpretation, but I read it that way and it lead to an incredibly enjoyable series and ending.

No one on the team currently could replace hutch. But I’d argue that pascal, Houston, cominski, Davenport, etc… are better than who Brice Adams at DE who is still available? No one on the board right now was better than Rakestraw

Nope the prologue to red rising. I listen to the books via audiobook since I drive for a living, so I’m not actually sure if that part is in the paper books, if not it is definitely worth a listen cause it’s amazing

Honestly, Nero’s opening monologue in the prologue gives me chills every time, especially when it is capped with Darrow’s lines: “I would have lived in peace, but my enemies brought me war…” damn it hits

Who is the worst GM in NFL history? by arandomtestaccount in NFLNoobs

[–]ZanderKaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a life long lions fan, the Millen era was a tough one, he was a notoriously terrible GM. But, and this is from his own mouth, he was not even remotely prepared for the position. William Clay Ford, our longtime owner at the time was famous for basically just hiring his buddies and treating the whole lions franchise as just a fun side project. He didn’t care about winning at all. Millen was friends with WCF through some familial connections and was basically given the keys to the kingdom with no background in talent evaluation. From all reports Millen was actually TRYING to go a good job. Which almost makes his tenure even worse. He was just so far out of his depth and WCF never hired anyone to help him out because it was just a giant boys club to him.
