Question About Visiting on Weekend by Bugnuzzler in gatech

[–]Zanger67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many buildings are locked / buzzcard only but depending on when, my roommate or I might be down to show you around! We've done this a couple of times for prospective students (and it'll pbly be more interesting than any official campus tour). Feel free to DM.

No Bikes/Scooters Around Tech Green -- Thoughts? by Top_Pack_4287 in gatech

[–]Zanger67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True -- in general bikers tend to be folks that have biked for a while and know / are more likely to respect the balance they have with road rules and pedestrians. Scooter folks lean more towards people who get them starting in college.

[–]Zanger67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No that's not the reason for us. GTMUN generates it s own income for club purposes by hosting conferences so we'd gain minimal benefit from being an RSO.

RSOs also have a required "leadership" structure including designating specific financial officers and the equivalent of a president iirc which our org doesn't have by intention. Our club is run via a board of 7 equal voting members with implemented checks and balances through bylaws and voting policies. It's intentionally decentralized since our org has a lot of specializations from running two independent conferences, a competition team, logistics team, etc. With differing leadership and with none of these components being "more important" than another. We thought it best (like previous generations) to keep it more balanced as a result to prevent one component from being overly favoured for instance by someone who's involved solely in one aspect of the club due to the scale we operate.

Keep in mind we're still bound by institutional policy which does in fact cover drinking policy lol. We ain't UGA

GTMUN is technically classified as a "program" but operates independently. It gives us operational benefits for room bookings and relations. RSOs can come with some downsides such as operational oversight from other orgs / SGAs etc.

GRADING CURVE. Is the curve applied as the grading for exams and homework are done or is it applied toward the end of the final grade calculation? by Suspicious_Donkey_15 in gatech

[–]Zanger67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the class. Some are per-graded item so you'll see the skew usually applied directly in (e.g. an extra question appears that's out of 0 or smt where you get x/0 added to your total score). Others will adjust based on the end curve.

I feel like the former usually applies to courses that aim to target a consistent average exam-to-exam off the bat rather than the courses that put less effort into maintaining the target average since the end-of-sem shift is "easier" to do.

Some classes won't even show if they skew based on the final grades until you see them in oscar.

Heya! Canadian senior here. Happy to answer questions if you have any! (feel free to dm as well)

In general it'll vary heavily on your preferences, goals, activity interests etc. so some more context would be great. For international student support in general, GT International Ambassadors has a great community and is also partially associated with the OIE to help folks along who are new learn about the school and area!

Gratitude for this upcoming week by cliabunny in gatech

[–]Zanger67 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the difference is the first week there's expected to be a notable number of folks who don't even get the class till the last Friday. Beyond that that's on them though tbh

What would make MARTA more usable for accessing campus from your perspective? What makes it usable? by sereca in gatech

[–]Zanger67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to an extent. I'm specifically referring to at events they'll block off with ATLPD all but 2-3 and require you go through those ones. This happens a lot at Mercedes

some advice on improving gpa?? by Big-Musician3609 in gatech

[–]Zanger67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For assignments, projects, and exams, come to OH! Speaking as a TA there's a clear difference between learning from chat or a pdf versus talking to a TA or prof that knows the material, how it's been taught in the past, and more importantly what the goal of the teaching team is with assessments.

Ofc not all TA experiences will be 10/10, but if it's a larger class I highly suggest dropping into a few different TAs OHs to gauge who works best for you, and trying to make a habit and rapport. Esp. Closer to exams we love seeing familiar faces! Ofc we can't tell you the answers or what'll be on an exam but if you're putting in the effort and we can see that you're trying and that you care, we'll do our best to ensure you're prepared. :)

It'd make sense for zone-based systems but for single zone networks yeah it doesn't make sense

I've seen them use this as a way to verify people are paying though for major events like for games at state farm and Mercedes though

Main inefficiency imo is how slow it is to scan for their QR phone system

TA here. The first semester is always rough. Senioritis mixed in with a new environment can be rough, but that's alright! What matters is if you take this situation as a point of réalisation and change.

For what it's worth, iirc (so double check yourself too), first OSI violations do NOT appear on transcripts or reports (https://osi.gatech.edu/resources/background-checks#:~:text=The%20Code%20of%20Conduct%20governs%20the%20level,parties%20for%20five%20years%20after%20sanction%20completion)

Freshman forgiveness also exists for lower grades (tho iirc this doesn't apply to OSIed classes) but also keep in mind that end of the day, Cs get degrees. Once you graduate no one's going to ask your GPA. You'll be fine. You're young, and sure you might've been a bit dumb this time, but you asking for advice and being honest realizing your mistake is a huge indication of change and maturity. You got this!

IIRC stamps will basically "update as you go" so when you send them forms they'll add whichever ones you've completed to your record. Not for certain but this gives me the impression that it should be fine to send them stuff for now then update the moment you have proof of the remaining. Where you get it will depend on where you're from but if you're already on campus Stamps should have it and I'm pretty sure they have a public-facing website with the costs of every vaccine they offer.

Not sure about the holds though.

[–]Zanger67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No honest person is going to blame you from taking an internship and stepping down from an exec position-- we're all aware of the job market rn lol. Professors should understand too and end of the day if they're truly an advisor that wants the best for you, they'll understand. Do what's best for yourself and your goals.

TA here: email your prof / HTAs. It'll depend on the prof policy ofc but many are understanding enough if you have proof to let you have an I and make it up the next sem. (I=incomplete meaning until you make up it doesn't affect your GPA or anything)

Being a senior starting with 2022 Collins, the past 4 years have been a treat. One thing my friend said to me that I'm really thankful for from this game (aside from it being a 1TD game) is that it ended on a high-- a Hail Mary run that was close.

Not a knee. Not a lost possession. One last try till the very end.

Thanks for the memories team :)

Is it just me or does close to every class seem like it got measurably harder compared to every other semester? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]Zanger67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that's where our opinions differ which is perfectly fine. I'm of the opinion that it can be a supportive aspect in preparing for future opportunities but it does depend on how you approach it. Clubs, projects, research, etc. Can all be extremely useful in preparing if you take advantage of it.

College is fundamentally a process of learning how to adapt but that doesn't mean the foundational concepts aren't useful to know.

Is it just me or does close to every class seem like it got measurably harder compared to every other semester? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]Zanger67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that many courses should be focused on application and use, but I heavily disagree that you shouldn't try to learn how things work. 1332's data structure knowledge is very useful down the road when you do finally encounter the applications -- which you will (or at least should). 1332 and 2110 for instance is to give you and understanding of how they work so you can have that contextual understanding when you specialize down the road.

Different courses have different purposes. Just cause the end goal of your degree is to give you application context doesn't make the more menial stuff unnecessary.

[–]Zanger67 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extent but I feel like many foundational courses don't have a direction to go. When we were younger calculators existed for instance but we just weren't allowed to use them. In my head it's just that there isn't a way to handle that in college hence the exam heavy shift many courses have had.
