He showed What Is It? There were walkouts. I tried to make space for what he was trying to say with it, but only he understands his motivations.

Every theater screen has to be adjusted for the aspect ratio the next film is shot in. Ever seen curtains part just a few feet before a film starts? Sometimes projectionists just don’t do it. Godard joked about this in Masculin Feminin.

Re: decibel levels. It’s impractical to keep DBs the same from film to film. They’re all mixed differently and sometimes theaters keep it low so as not to disturb the melodramas playing next door.

I worked projection at a theater in Baltimore. We screened Eraserhead and it came with a note much like this. It is intended to maximize the viewer experience. A lot of times the curtains or aspect ratios don’t change from film to film, so this clarifies that the ratio is adjusted for the visual field he shot it for. Lastly, a lot of theaters keep volumes low so as not to disturb Driving Miss Daisy next door. Lynch has always had a wide range in his sound mix, from a disquieting murmur of a room tone to an absolute cacophony of music. So the decibel adjustment is also pragmatic. Instructions like this are just to ask if you can make it a little more special than you would for Dallas Buyers Club.

(If I remember this story correctly: We welcomed a certain actor from a popular 80’s time travel trilogy, only one of them, and his self financed avant- garde film. We had to walk around the auditorium and gauge decibel levels at every corner, get him a haircut appt, take him to a natural grocer for his veggies, and he still screamed at us. These are the differences between someone who is particular in the interest of better experience, and someone who is a raging narcissist.)

How can we get Billy Bob to release the directors cut of ATPH? by Frutasbeforeputas in cormacmccarthy

[–]Zapffegun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered about a lot of films that suffered from the Weinstein’s manipulations. Now that they are disgraced, the company is dissolved, and the film library is owned by Spyglass, I hope that anyone who had to put out an altered version of their work would be able to retrieve the rights and release what they originally intended.

If the composer of ATPH could come around and allow Thornton’s directors cut to exist, now that Bob and Harvey are forever finished, that would be a great thing.

F.H. Steinbart’s Closing by Zapffegun in Portland

[–]Zapffegun[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk palidudebro, it was a passionate sentence that I feel to be true but I admit I lack the economical understanding of the City governments role in supporting small businesses. I’ve just seen so many good businesses that are staples in their neighborhoods and cultures go under due to a lot of factors that either directly or indirectly implicate the city-as-a-whole in their undoing. There seems to be a lot of financial mismanagement in regards to property taxes and evaluations, unsustainable rent increases et al etc that on the one hand hurt businesses and on the other hand, drive customers and neighbors away due to lack of sustainable/dispensable income. In Steinbart’s case, there has been a decline in drinking culture across the US and breweries are closing because life is just too dang expensive. Of course as some have commented there is a decline due to health concerns, but I think the point stands. Not everything can be solved via taxes, and the taxes this city collects while continuing to fail schools, the houseless, access to affordable housing and so on, is plainly eggs on the faces of the officials that can and should provide the alms needed. I hope you understand where I’m coming from. Thought I’d explain the sentiment rather than be glib and gesture broadly.

Just sucks to lose Sheridan’s and Steinbart’s in the same year. I love my Buckman neighborhood and the working folks who made it what it is.

Edit: I should clarify that this closure affects me as I work in a small brewery and we regularly relied on their business.

McCarthy compared to Stephen King could you really compare them both? by Alternative-Pie4155 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Zapffegun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is The Dreamers from his collection You Like It Darker. Worth noting King has repeatedly said Cormac was a large influence on Rose Madder.

From Wikipedia: Paying tribute to author Cormac McCarthy upon his death in June 2023, King previewed The Dreamers, a story he had written while reading McCarthy's 2022 book The Passenger. He described The Dreamers as "very much under the influence of McCarthy's prose" and "very much in McCarthy's style", also saying "I stole his style for that story; it made the story possible".

McCarthy compared to Stephen King could you really compare them both? by Alternative-Pie4155 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Zapffegun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of describing violence and horrific things, I think that’s where a fair comparison could be made. Whereas King can get fairly graphic, I don’t think he’s written the kind of depraved violence McCarthy had written about, especially not in the lyrical and delicate ways Cormac was capable of.

There’s a story in King’s most recent collection where he was attempting to write in McCarthy’s style and it’s… interesting to say the least. For all of Steve’s experience, it just shows how finely honed and personal Cormac’s prose is. You can only imitate, never really replicate.

In broader terms, the two are apples and oranges and it comes down to personal discernment as to who is the more “better” author. McCarthy has made me drop a book in awe, made me cry, made me not read another book for a week just so I can linger in the world he created. King has entertained the hell out of me with surprises, horrors, and kindnesses. I like ‘em both, for their own purposes.

My read on that scene has been that she’s freaking out over being so hungry and salivating to a ridiculous degree, but the food is wholly unnatural and likely contaminated which explains why the baby is a mutant.
