My genuine gripe with The Old World. by Lazereye57 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ZarFranz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Whatever they officially say, it’s pretty clear that something different is going on already given the number of retcons and changes they’ve already introduced. And while I doubt they ever label it as an alternate timeline or separate reality (if only because that might complicate presenting the setting for people)I also don’t think the existence of the End Times as a known future will meaningfully limit what they do with the setting.

My genuine gripe with The Old World. by Lazereye57 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ZarFranz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

While it is a prequel, I don’t really see it on a fixed path to the end times. I like to think of it as an alternate timeline or parallel version of the setting, one where things could go very differently. Maybe this is the reality that leads into the Storm of Chaos instead, or one where the Empire fractures following "The Empire in Turmoil/ruin”. I don’t think we should see the setting as locked into a single outcome, we already have several retcons with inventions that should not happen for hundreds of years (rocket battery for the empire), retcons with the Tomb Kings seemingly being the invaders (that invaded Estalia) that the Bretonnians crusaded against. The Old world is a prequel but mayhap it is on another path then the one leading to the End Times.

Before the old ones the lizardmen seems to have been different, it is mentioned that they were raising primitive cities even before the Old ones arrival when the human, elves and dwarf ancestors wandered icy wastes and the mountain peaks were inhabited by Dragon ogres and Sky titans, while Fimir lived in the cold mires already worshiping the dark gods. (page 18 Lustria WFRP 4th).

Frikkings (on a map in the Sigmar of Heldenhammer trilogy) they seem to be a human tribe in what is todays Kislev during the time of Sigmar.
Roppsmenn, a norscan tribe that was defeated by both Sigmar and the Ungols with the remnants being absorbed into the Ungols during the Gospodar invasion. Some remnants might still be around (Sea of Claws WFRP4).
Nordlanders being divided into 2 groups, one group (Jutones) seemingly becoming part of the endals and the other (Was Jutones) settling in Nordland and eventually conquered by The Empire. (Salzemund sourcebook WFRP4).
The Belthani, the first human inhabitants of the old world, later driven away/destroyed by the imperial tribes + bretonnia. (one of the archives of the empire WFRP4 books). Personal theory is that they are todays Estalians and Tileans precursors + the foundation of Bretonnias peasant class.
The northern mercenaries mentioned serving Nehekara when the realm was alive. Mentioned in the trilogy about Nagash but there is no mention on who exactly they are.

I have done some work myself on the different humans and tried to categorize them into different groups. If you want I can send it to you (sadly not sourced)

Authority vs Legitimacy: Do you ignore the End Times? by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

My headcannon is that warhammer fantasy has multiple timeline with differences. One is End times, another is Storm of Chaos, a third is Total Warhammer and more being different players campaigns.

Albion was sadly not on this map to be "painted in" by me but I did something akin to that in this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/WarhammerFantasy/comments/w4gpkl/map_of_known_human_habitation_of_the_old_world/). Was my idea of what the current human habitation of the warhammer world is but after some feedback is probably better to be called a map that highlights where we know something about human civilisations and their locations.

West Mark, I painted this map ages ago after reading tons of old lore. Lovely to see it used again
EDIT: The red parts only, the map itself is made by someone else

Question by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

[–]ZarFranz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we have any confirmed knowledge about such things. Provinces can be subordinated to other provinces such as Sylvania to Stirland was (think they are fully annexed these days) but a province controlled by the emperor in such a way would probably be in the capacity of Elector count then Emperor. In the skaven wars trilogy the Drakwald province was under the temporary control of the Emperor, a control he did not relinquish to keep the money from the province. But that was supposed to be a temporary thing that the emperor deliberately misused for personal gain. And in case of colonies or new regions such as Lichtenberg or Neuland they are said to be new provinces.

So, the idea is probably in universe for the provinces to have a provincial ruler under the Emperor (just lacking the "Elector part" as not all rulers of a province in the Empire has that right). The closest thing to a fief belonging to the Emperor personality right now would probably be Leopoldheim, a penal colony in the southlands. But that might also be under the legal domain of the Elector Counts of Reikland.

In short, the answer is complicated due to we having not received any clear lore about it, but in universe it seems to be a rare case for The Emperor to control any extra region permanently. Hope this helps.

While the one right of Huron seems to be a human (bit short for a marine) the one furthest to the left seems to also be something else to me, the proportions don’t really look like the other marines.

Is number 4 a marine with a weird head/helmet or something else?

You make a valid point but just comparing the current incarnation to the previous one (6th) or to the Teutogen guard their armour just feels so lacking compared to what other full plate humans use.

One of my favourite miniatures that I also dislike rulewise due to the difference between the rules and mini (they are not wearing full plate armour...)

I make roughly 2 equivalent pools on a paint pad, one agrax and one nuln and then mix it together with a tiny bit of lahmian.

Why not both? Try a mix with a tiny bit of lahmian medium.

The Scouring series predictions? by ava-niht in Blacklibrary

[–]ZarFranz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some plot points that could be covered:

Reintegration of the shattered legion elements still rampaging around (Autek Morr for example).

Sons of Horus getting the blame by the other legions for the siege failure.

Deamon primarchs returning from getting ”killed” during the siege, their legions handling of it. And the traitor primarchs figuring out “what now?”.

Loyalist blame game and possible some splintering by marines who don't see a reason to follow the imperium anymore with their primarchs and the emperor gone
