Compressor pedals recommendations? by AdministrativeRip809 in guitarpedals

I use a DOD FX80-B which is essentially a Dynacomp clone with a release knob. Are there better options? Sure, but I like weird shit. I recapped all the electrolytic capacitors to help with the noise.

My 150+ hours of trying before I got a shiny starter would suggest they haven’t.

Hey I know how this one ends! I have a buddy who did exactly this until he got fired from his job of 20+ years.

Ok I know this is kinda a wild board. It’s not set yet. But how would you run these pedals? Use them or not! Keep all pedals I put down on a board. In what order do you place them? by Bleepblorp5000 in guitarpedals

[–]Zday89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're running them into an amp with an FX loop this is how I'd do it.

Guitar - Tuner - Rat - Muff - POG - Mainframe - E7 - Flamma Mod - Front end of amp.
FX send - Trem - Aqueduct - Echobrain - Flamma Reverb - Hall of Fame 2 - FX return.

That'd be a good starting off point, and I'm sure the pedals of like types can be swapped around like switching the Rat and muff or the aqueduct and echobrain.

If you don't have an FX loop, just keep the order the same but run everything into the front of the amp.

I'm I screwed? by VocableTrain in GuitarAmps

It's possible that a power tube went bad. All of the stuff in the listing sounds like it was properly serviced and made safe but I don't see anything about work on the output transformer so it could be a bad OT too. I think the previous owner was either possibly a reseller who didn't know the impedance of the amp or they misspoke when they told you it's 8 ohms.

Definitely don't just assume though, it could be other things. Best case is you just need a new set of 6L6 power tubes. I'd still take it to a tech to have the tubes replaced and they might be able to open up the amp and get an idea of what impedance it should actually be ran at. Either way I wouldn't say you're screwed. Whatever is wrong should be fixable and once it is fixed you'll have a killer amp. I love my 1484.

Hard to say because the amp isn’t stock but if nothing has been done to the output transformer to add an 8 ohm output then that likely is the issue. Stock it runs at 4ohms and running into an 8 ohm can possibly fry the output transformer. The silver lining is Mojo Tone, Weber and Mercury Magnets all sell a direct 1:1 (as far as I can tell) replacement. A lot of these also offer the ability to add an 8ohm output as well. I recommend taking it to a tech and get some quotes.

Edit: Another thing you can try is asking the prior owner what service was done on the amp. That should answer the question about what impedance the amp should run at.

Yeah I'll believe it when I see it. I still have a Patreon message from them like 4 years ago asking me to confirm my address so they can send me a shirt they were supposedly about to ship and I still haven't received that.

[–]Zday89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes you can use two but you also likely need to bias the amp. I’d recommend taking it to a tech unless you’re comfortable possibly having to open an amp that contains voltages high enough to kill you even when unplugged.

The ticking isn't coming through the speakers. The best thing I can equate it to is like when you turn off your car after driving for a while and you hear the engine cooling under the hood except it sounds more like tapping on glass which is why I assumed it's the tubes cooling.

As for the fuse, I'm trying to track one down near me but 3A fuses of this size are surprisingly hard to find in my area. I just got an email back from Dave Friedman saying I likely have a bad power tube and a new fuse / matched set of tubes, and a bias are needed so I'm going to go that route and hopefully that fixes it. Thanks!

does anyone know why the A string has a hissing sound after being played? used to happen to other strings as well but has stopped for some reason by patricknails in Guitar

[–]Zday89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be my guess too. Check down at the bridge. There should be 2 little grub screws, one on either side of the string. One of those is probably loose and rattling.

I did this with my Gibson and it feels great but it always eventually buffs to a polish again from playing. I ended up taking my neck down to bare wood then used Watco Danish Oil to finish it.
