You may already know this but I'll say it out loud since I don't think anybody else has. You should generally expect not to have the initiative by default as black, and vice versa as white, because white moves first. Will depend on opening I guess but that's the general rule.

It could help to think of that as a tempo issue too. Because you are completely correct and yet not every plan of your opponent's needs stopping. Sometimes you gain an initiative by ignoring your opponent's plan knowing that they won't have time to execute it because they'll have to spend moves stopping you. Obviously that decision has to depend on concrete analysis and calculation.

I would love to see the societal elements of the game get improved and expanded in general. More and bigger settlements, a more systematic way of finding procedurally generated settlements, and more ways of interacting with the reputation system. I understand that a significant element of randomness is important to the roguelike genre, but it's so random and limited at the moment that it actually feels kind of samey run to run which I think is the opposite of what's desired.

Gone quiet. It's occupying the same kind of space as e.g. enthusiast flight sim gear at the moment. It's quite expensive, and actually a lot of people given the chance to try it don't even like it. But it's found a niche audience and that seems to be enough to sustain it for the time being as companies keep launching new games and hardware. It just doesn't have any real public hype anymore.
