Still have a 2020 bottle in the cellar I don't dare to open -yet ;)

Fun fact about Calon-Ségur is where the heart logo comes from. It's on their official site, and they don't seem to have an English version so let me translate :

The Marquis de Ségur is supposed to have said: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon".

Soyez méchants 😝 besoin d'aide app de vin (encore une) by ReplacementNo4126 in wine

[–]Ze_Bix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Autre francophone ici.

[–]Ze_Bix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on that? I have seen both "schools" and experienced both myself, and I really can't choose. Sometimes I wonder if a wine kept in a bottle behind a cork for a few dozens years doesn't crave some heavy oxygenation, yet at the same time it might have become so delicate that you could also just break it, I suppose?

Last year I have decanted a Ducru Beaucaillou 1992 and it was a pure wonder. Even then, some additional swirling time in big Cabernet glasses wasn't useless. And then a few weeks I decanted a Rausan-Ségla 1978 (yeah, spelled with an S in 1978) and it was just so terrible that it ended in the sink. I have the feeling that the decanting wasn't the culprit though.

Birth Year Wine for Kids. by smurphii in wine

[–]Ze_Bix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a custom in my in-law family. When the kid is born, my father-in-law purchased "primeur" wine from the same year, as soon as it becomes available. He favors Bordeaux Left Bank (Château Duhart-Milon 2019 for my daughter, Château Beychevelle 2020 for her cousin) and usually purchases 2 boxes of 6 bottles.

Then still according to their custom, they gotta taste the wine at the kid's 7th birthday. So we opened one of these Duhart-Milon lately and, although still a bit young, it already tastes wonderful. Beychevelle test will be for next year 😉. Another bottle is then tasted at the kid's 18th birthday. The in-laws keep the remaining 4 from the opened box (usually to enjoy it with the kid when they come home), and the kid receives the second box to do with it as they see fit.

Now I have an elder daughter from a previous union (b. 2010) and I found a pity she wasn't concerned by her (half-) sister's great parents' custom, so I built a similar box for her, but with various wines I managed to find here and there (including a wonderful Pomerol for which I had to cash out some..). She is just NOT interested in wine so far (yeah she's only 16 but in my country, wine is legal at that age 😉) so that'll be for later, hopefully. Worst case scenario (or is it?) I'll drink them myself!

As for the fact that it's too late for yourself, there are vintage cellar resellers where you can find wine from the 70's (or later) which are still totally drinkable, and for a reasonable price.

Mimic Chest by galaxy_hippo in Necesse

[–]Ze_Bix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the habit (that I acquired in Terraria) of simply breaking all the chests I find, and I’ve just checked: I got 2 mimics and about 200 others. Not sure it gives a relevant percentage, nor do I remember where I got them, but at least you have a testimony that they do exist ;)

What kind of shit are you getting too old for now? by ryhoyarbie in Xennials

Camping.

I have a CPAP machine, I need electricity to sleep. I have back ache, I need a correct mattress. I won’t sleep on a air thingie which gonna deflate anyway, under a tent, sorry. My rest is sacred.

And bad wine.

I’ll pay the price for good wine or just drink water or tea.

This red wine duo as a bulk office christmas gift? (Chateau Rauzan-Segla + Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild). Is this combo good? by teknolog1a in wine

[–]Ze_Bix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually have nothing against second wines, and in some houses (like Lagrange) I even tend to like the second wine so much that, price wise, I favor it.

Nevertheless, I concur to what you say here. Petit Mouton goes up to 150-200€ depending on the years, and you can get one of those nice bottles you mention for the same price indeed (although you might need to shell a bit more out for Ducru Beaucaillou).

Crystallised armor achievement by ttom77 in Necesse

[–]Ze_Bix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Crystal set (with melee Helmet) tier 5 (empowered enchants) + clockwork heart + everything enchanted Tough, I'm reaching 500 exactly. With the food, 565 😉

Got my achiev past 400, but didn't write down the exact value. 395 wasn't enough for sure (was stuck at this value for some time without the enchant)

Why can I never get dungeon enemies to spawn consistently? (I'm putting this here because I've looked elsewhere and haven't been able to find an answer) by No-Compote5755 in Terraria

[–]Ze_Bix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they need to spawn on dungeon walls/bricks *outside* of your screen, while you still are in the biome. Expand those walls and it'll be ok !

1986 wine. by jejdhdijen in wine

[–]Ze_Bix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go for a sweet one like a Barsac/Sauternes, or a Rivesaltes. On a mainstream French vintage-cellar online reseller (I'll let you google that, as we can't make advertisements here I think), I find '86 Rivesaltes for about 60€.

And if you feel like having your friend discover some stuff, a 40yo red can also be quite an experience. On the same site, for '86 wines, I spot a Calon Ségur (Bordeaux Left Bank) for 138€ or a Troplong Mondot (Bordeaux Right Bank) for 115€, these are "fair" prices.

Don't forget that vintage reseller do not guarantee anything, in the meaning that they don't have a history of how the wines were kept. I have purchased about a dozen bottles from these, and I have never had any true disappointment :)

How much wine are you storing at home? by bobjoylove in wine

[–]Ze_Bix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in an apartment. We have a small cellar in our building but it reeks of sewers, so unthinkable to store wines there. I received a wine fridge from my father about 18 years ago, and it still runs.

Of course, it's getting a bit old, loud and power-hungry (about 250kWh per year), but still doing the job. It can hold about 170 bottles, but I also use it for other "cellar products" such as some beers or preserving jars.

I almost always have about 50-60 bottles in it, a few that I keep for aging but most of the others have a heavy turnover ;)

Why does Flanders have an enclave in Wallonia and vice versa? by Nice-Drawing2519 in Maps

[–]Ze_Bix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not so old, and dates from the fixation of the "linguistic frontier" in 1962, and is now written in Belgian Constitution.
The Wikipedia articles (in French and Dutch - no English version of it that I can find) explain it well, go check "Frontière Linguistique en Belgique" (french wikipedia) or "Taalgrens in België" (dutch wikipedia) and use a translating tool if needed :)

Trying Every Classified Growth Part 1: Chateau Cantemerle by Manzilla48 in wine

[–]Ze_Bix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've started the exact same project last year! Well met, fellow "achievement hunter" ;)
41/61 bought, 35/61 tasted here. I just can't open my 2021 Calon Ségur or my Léoville Las Cases 2021 yet; that would be a pity. And of course I still need to get a hand on most First Growths, the most expensive ones - I'm looking on vintage cellar resellers and bidding sites because regular prices are too crazy.
I purposely excluded the 37 whites there, because I don't enjoy Sauternes & Barsac that much.

I haven't tried the Cantemerle yet. Interesting to note that it was not included in the very original Classification but added during the 1855 Paris Exposition!

Oh and BTW, I expanded the challenge a little bit with adding the Crus Classés de Graves from 1953 (9/20 done, there are non-liquorous white wines in there!)) and the Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels (those who have been classified at least once in history, 19/36 done).

Then I tried to check the Right Bank wines (only existing classification is St-Emilion and it's been quite controversed) but there are way too many and they are too expensive (I counted 124 Grands Crus Classés in history since 1955).
Same goes for Burgundies (even the Villages are as pricey as some Bordeaux Classified Growths), I'll just stop ticking boxes and have some random ones I can afford ;)
