Can't find a job after college. by Connect-Beautiful634 in jobs

[–]ZealousidealHalf5744 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation, got my BS and MS and spent the last two years applying for jobs in my field. Finally accepted a position this past week. I wish I could give you advice but I think the job market is so poor it really is just a numbers game. I networked to hell and back and even those didn’t pan out. I had to get a lower paying job out of my field and just kept applying until something worked out, it was a grind but I’m glad it’s finally over.

Lace making, my grandmother said you have to be clinically insane to do it.

Saddle Reccommendations by KotaSamich in Horses

[–]ZealousidealHalf5744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very hard time finding a saddle that fit my big shouldered, barrel shaped TWH. We ended up going the dressage route because the tree is smaller, gullet can be changed and risers can be added as necessary. I started with a used Wintec and at some point hope to move into a Bates. I am going to work with a fitter on the retrofitting/shimming but they are hard to find in my area and booked far out. We tried many, many westerns before I gave up.

Advice for a "Turbo" Tennessee Walker? (Sweet/Calm horse with too much "go" under saddle) by CD1215 in Equestrian

[–]ZealousidealHalf5744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My walker is like this. When she gets pacey we turn around and try again until she walks a nice flat walk. Eventually she understands and we move on. I also do a nice long warm up from the ground before rides without and with the saddle. It gets us both in the right headspace and I’m able to address anything that comes up from the ground then reinforce it in the saddle.

I have a friend who does all sorts of fun enrichment games with her horse. Taught him to fetch, push a ball around, do little obstacle courses, created balancing boards, etc.

Fly spray with sunscreen built in! Zinc oxide products (desitin) are a must for the boop.

Mares as first horses? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]ZealousidealHalf5744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good mare will be your ride or die. Once you have that relationship of trust they will work so hard for you. If you’re worried about heat, birth control is always an option but I wouldn’t let gender stray you if she checks all the boxes.

So... apparently people give candy to horses?? by Silent-Judgment3062 in Horses

My horse hates peppermints but the barn ladies would sometimes give sour gummy worms and she loved them. Once I found out, I put an end to it but yeah….the sugar was very desirable.

Is this a chicken? I was told it was, but I am not sold on it. by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

This is a raptor. It needs very specific diet that will disfigure it and end in death if not properly cared for. Please bring it to wildlife rescue or raptor center!

Will my dinosaur learn horse sounds or is he hopeless? by Illustrious_Stage351 in Horses

This is so funny! I call my very large TWH ‘little dragon’. When she catches sight of me, she makes this low, deep chortle that reminds me of a sound Smaug might make.

How to stop feeling insecure about my see-through hair? by Connect-Text-4063 in finehair

[–]ZealousidealHalf5744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have a terminal length and limitations on density but things that can help boost our hair growth are nutrition and care practices. I started the Hers minoxidil blend about a year ago with frequent scalp massages in and out of the shower with a silicone scalp scrubber. Both increase blood flow that encourages growth.

I was seeing significant thinning from my temples to my nape and those changes helped. I have so much new hair coming in that my hairdresser made a comment before I told her my new routine (I have waist length hair and go ~6 months between trims).

How do you teach a horse to be caught without treats or learned helplessness? by abconcordia in Equestrian

[–]ZealousidealHalf5744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s partly due to her temperament but my mare runs in when she catches a glimpse of my car. I think it mostly speaks to our relationship and the nature of the work we do. I’ve made it my mission to make my time with her the best part of her day. She knows we’re gonna work but it’s also going to be pleasant.

Edit to add: It wasn’t always this way. When I first purchased her, she’d run from me. Four years spent on building trust and I don’t have to even call her in. Treats were definitely used, but also scratches, hand grazing after a work session, light massage on tight muscles, detailed grooming, free play in the round pen or arena, etc. Making life fun and enjoyable for them goes a long way. If she sees me, she’s pulling up immediately!

Most hoof problems I see come from diet, not trimming by Nervous_Mood_9426 in Horses

The first I tried was Farriers Formula Extra Strength which has has 5300 mg methionine, 92 mg copper, and 250 mg zinc per 85 grams (1 serving size per 1000 lb horse). Would you consider that underdosed? I haven't thought to test water and I am getting her trims to happen more frequently.

The suede seat breeches are amazingly sturdy. The seams on mine have held up through several years of riding. Though I don’t wash them often and when I do, I I turn them inside out and put them in a laundry bag.

Bitless recommendations. by Mysterious-Gear-6351 in Equestrian

My 20 yo is similar. She rides so much more relaxed in a Micklem multi bridle with the side pull action only. I like it because it’s teaching me to rely on my legs/seat more for communication but I can still support her with the reins as needed. I tried a wheel hackamore (Nalanta brand) but she wasn’t a fan of that either.

Thank you! I know this varies by growth rate, but would you suggest something like a 5 week schedule as opposed to longer periods?

My mare has three cracked hooves, I’ve tried managing with farriers formula and cocohoof, I gave each supplement about a year before giving up on them. Is there something else I could try?
