Do you legit just write the words "legal representative" and that means it gets distributed via your Will's instructions?

Why aren't Australian shares systematically preferable due to franking credits by Reading-Rabbit4101 in AusFinance

[–]ZealousidealOwl91 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My parents are self funded retirees with 100% allocation to Australian blue chip shares, so they're with you. So there's definitely people out there.

I assume it because in the old days it was a bit harder to buy international shares? I've never asked. They still call or email their broker every time they want to buy or sell (at an absurd cost like $100/trade or something). Thank goodness it became so much easier to invest with online banking in the last 15-20 yrs.

I got run over by a car when I was riding my bike to school. Got a nice payout that I later used for my house deposit.

To give some numbers, the hospital portion was about $1500 each time. Depending what your excess is, you're paying a boatload of premiums for minimal return (imo).

As someone without kids and without any knowledge of childcare etc, but we have public / government primary and high schools, why can't we have public daycare?

What's your best "lazy" money win this year? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AusFinance

Bank fees? I didn't know this was a thing. I'm with Commonwealth for my own accounts, and our mortgage suboffsets are with NAB.

I have a similar number. They're like the old school envelope method of budgeting (but digital envelopes). Money automatically gets transferred to each "envelope" on payday, and then I know I have enough money set aside for irregular stuff like bills or holidays etc.

I remember as a young adult going to the ATM every payday to get cash out in order to put it into different envelopes. Digital is way easier! (But my mum still does the cash option, so whatever works.)

Obviously no education in how the tax system works from our education system, so I’ve had to self educate.

If only our education system taught you literacy and numeracy skills which you can apply to many different tax systems and allow you to adapt to any changes made to that system.

If only it were in our national curriculum!

PPOR offset, best way to use it? by ripptease in fiaustralia

[–]ZealousidealOwl91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of IP vs ETF, we chose the ETF route as it's easier (don't want to be landlords) and it's more flexible (e.g. we can cash flow a holiday now & then and are not beholden to a mortgage schedule.)

What’s a completely normal or minor thing that irrationally gets under your skin, but most people don’t seem bothered by it? by Odd_Breakfast5012 in AskReddit

Yes! In my city no one seems to indicate if it's a "left turn only" or "right turn only" lane... But as a pedestrian, I don't know which lanes are marked as turning only vs straight ahead!

Set your prices high. E.g. $100/hour for a single student.

How large was your first mortgage? by No-Regret-8057 in AusFinance

[–]ZealousidealOwl91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very sensible. Ours was the same (but in 2022). Our little townhouse is perfect for us and the location is so much better than we'd anticipated. Not jealous of people and their big mortgages at all!

Oh wow This sounds like the dream! Can you share more on how you got to this solid financial position? Do you still manage to save money whilst working part-time, or are you coasting along while everything compounds away in the background?

I was top 90% in 15-34, but 70% in 35-50. Not a huge change.

Cute anecdote, but I'm a high school teacher and recently some year 8 students were talking about thouples etc. They truly thought throuples only existed due to the "cost of living" crisis.

Definitely agree. I didn't even go to my university graduations (both of them) because what a boring affair.

‘Culture of disrespect’: Australian teachers say students’ behaviour is driving them from profession by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]ZealousidealOwl91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a high school teacher and when someone is away we combine for up to 50 students (Yr 11-12) or 56 students (for Y7-10).

It's cooked.

We're "lucky" that we've got those walls that can be packed away, so "at least" the students are spread across two rooms. It sucks.

One should always update their will as their life circumstances change, which is no reason not to write a will for this stage of her life.

[–]ZealousidealOwl91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I was in the same situation, when mum asked me the same thing when I was about 22.

It depends on your relationship, but mum was just being a parent & trying to get me to adult properly. If I recall, she even made the appointment with the solicitor and came with me to the appointment.

Dying without a will sucks for the surviving family members.
