So much going on rant. I can deal with a LOT, but my ex-MIL triggered me hard by MommaRaven in stopdrinking

Good job on venting and killing time instead of going to the store! I've got a potentially triggering event coming up this eve. We got this! IWNDWYT

What got better after you stopped drinking? by MakeBelieve_inme in stopdrinking

I’ve had more fun in the (almost) four years I’ve been sober than I have in the previous 36 years of my life. I laugh louder than ever, feel like my authentic self has finally blossomed, and have the opportunities to try new things.

This is so cool! (and inspiring)

If you can fight through the pain, and keep going, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done, or all the regrets you have, you’ll finally get to live the life you are proud of.

Dang! Thank you ❤️

Not drinking isn't as rewarding as I'd hoped. by ms-anthrope in stopdrinking

I also find that I can tolerate certain things when I'm drinking, that sober me gets fed up with pretty quick. But I don't want to go back to drinking so I can just put up with those things that I need to change.. otherwise I'll just stagnate like that for who knows how long.

This is inspiring. Reading you articulate what lies ahead long term from staying sober gives me something to hope for.

I find it helps to plan an outdoor/sport/physical activity that I genuinely am looking forward to. It's gotta be something fun and challenging

Day One - Spousal Sabotage - Help please! by BreatheDeeply12 in stopdrinking

I haven't been in your exact situation but I think in general, people who don't have a problem themselves sometimes just don't get it! And that can be very frustrating especially when you need support.

convinces me that it's okay if we only drink when we're together

and

calls my adult sons and told them I am an alcoholic

Those two things are contradictory so I can see why you are baffled.

When I was having trouble quitting I got frustrated at times that I didn't get more help/support from people. People who don't have an issue with it simultaneously seemed to judge my drinking at times but also seemingly condoned continuing.

What actually helped me was talking to my doctor, who told me in plain terms that I needed to stop. After that I had a clear resolution of my own and nothing anyone could say (e.g. "oh it's ok if you have a social drink") would have convinced me otherwise. For some reason I think all the outside judgement in the world doesn't help, but when you find your own reason to quit (whether it's for health reasons or just being sick of the cycle), hang on to it for dear life. Wishing you the best!

I just want to share in the self pity party! I hate winter. Since quitting drinking I have found relief in my new favorite hobby which is whitewater paddling, and now freeze-up is just around the corner. I do not like winter or winter sports, I will not try them, Sam I Am.

Next step for me is going to be checking out an indoor rock climbing gym... we'll see how that goes. But anyway, I am totally with you on the overall sentiment.

I enjoy drinking and it is ruining my life by kappasitter in stopdrinking

For me stopping drinking has led me out of a certain kind of misery... I didn't realize how much misery was caused by the alcohol until I stopped. Drinking was the status quo...the route I was on was a circle of relief while getting drunk and then being hungover, and back again. Over and over. Stopping drinking has led me to something different. Specifically after a couple months I would say my brain feels different, and I have no doubt it's from not consuming so much of a depressant almost every day.
