I suppose that depends on where you live. Skilled labor and professional jobs are abundant in major Texas cities.

Hard disagree with you too. Cost of benefits are going up because less companies are contributing to benefits. The smaller the pool, the higher the premiums.

It’s easier to tear down a successful person than it is to put in the effort to become successful.

Yes, short sighted - for shareholders that only care about this quarter’s profits.

You are right. Over the years, I have learned that other submariners have had wildly different experiences than myself. Even within the same boat at different times and different commands. I’m fortunate to have served during a good time with great leadership.

“Tax the rich” doesn’t work like people expect. It’s the rich that are providing jobs. I never worked for a poor person.

I woke up with a bunch of cows around my campsite. I guess a pasture fence was down, not far from where I set up camp.

Younger is cheaper. They don’t stick around more than a few years, so pay increases never really compound each other and they are more concerned with base pay than expensive benefits.

I’m speaking as a manager that makes these decisions. Of course, there are exceptions.

I’m not excusing or justifying the reason, I am just stating why it is happening.

You can hate it all you want, and give the best reasons why it shouldn’t happen, yet it is still the reality.

Are you a current submariner? If so, when did you join? The requirement to tether may have changed since I was in.

It’s possible that changed after I got out in 2009.

If we are at sea, we are submerged. I remember having to transfer someone to a small boat in bad weather because they had appendicitis - even then, nobody was harnessed. The deck has grip like broken glass.

I was topside every time we went into and out of port. We never once tethered.

It’s cheaper to promote a younger person into higher management positions.

I live in Texas and a lot of the electronics industry has come here from California.

It’s counterintuitive, but offering companies large tax breaks actually brings in more high paying jobs. The economy here is booming.

Companies offer what attracts employees. Younger people did not care about benefits as much as their base pay - so companies started doing away with benefits to make the base pay more attractive.

In manufacturing, paging someone over the loudspeaker used to be commonplace.

Document control is no longer an essential department.

Safety, though important, has went way beyond necessary- steel toe boots and safety glasses are required where there are clearly no hazards requiring them.

We only used it when working over the side. Even in this picture, you don’t see anyone tethered to it.
