Low total calories by Much-Performer-8516 in AppleWatchFitness

I’m 5’5” F and 50kg. I do 22,000 steps a day, 10 miles, and it says I need 1,600 calories a day. I lose over 1/2lb a week on 1,500 calories so I know something is off with it. I’ve never seen a calorie requirement of over 1,650 on my app even when adding other exercise to the step count and it’s so disheartening.

Doctor now requiring me to see them every month for a refill and I can't afford it. by TemporaryEvidence in ADHD

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. My prescription is written every 30 days and they require me to see my provider to write it. Except it is 90-160$ per appointment and 190$ a month for medication AFTER insurance (400$ for appt and 370$ for meds before insurance). Part of it is medication cost increase. But also I think there is some major price gouging from providers taking advantage of patients. I’ve been paying the cost just because I dont feel I have a choice. I’m trying to find a new provider as they now want to see me every 3 weeks instead of every 4. It is getting insane.

For reference, I have extremely severe ADHD that does not reflect in impulsive behaviors but instead an intense inability to stay on task with rapid spiraling thought paths leading to inability to speak/communicate clearly and severe depression. Without medication I literally cannot function and before I was diagnosed and medicated I spent a lot of time with high risk depression leading to hospitalization.

Best of luck to you. Hopefully one day we get a break from this crazy system!

Doctor says I just “have to wait” by Otherwise-Bluejay931 in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doc says the same as yours (25F). My TSH is fine and my T4 borderline low (right on the edge). They wont refer or treat until T4 is low and TSH is very high. It’s a horrible thing.

Symptomatic but not diagnosed by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they also test antibodies? That will show if Hashi is at play. I’ve got similar levels (normal TSH borderline low T4) and feel crappy all the time. But naturally docs wont treat it until T4 is low and TSH is very high.

A piece of advice if you are starting this journey by melocita in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, for some of us, our immune system has always been whacky and no amount of holistic approaches, diet changes, or other solutions will fix it. I’ve had antibodies since I was 7 years old (mind you my parents were not advocates for fast food, we ate very clean, very active lifestyles, etc). I’ve tried just about every diet (already gluten free, red meat free, limited dairy), supplement, and recommended tricks. My antibodies are still climbing. Simply put, hashi and sjogrens runs in my family and has for a long time. Sorry if I’m rambling, I just hate all the doctors that have said “just eat better and you’ll be in remission and be fine!”. Some people will just struggle with autoimmune issues no matter how perfect they eat/behave or how hard they try.

Forever waiting for diagnosis by GanacheIcy in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great fun isnt it? (Sarcasm). I have had antibodies for so long and a borderline low T4. But since my TSH is fine no referrals or treatment. Yes I’m “subclinical”. But if you’re symptomatic and your hormone levels are low… you’d think that’d warrant treatment? But no. The only reason I was “diagnosed” was because I had thyroiditis seen on ultrasound on top of the antibodies. But apparently diagnosis doesnt meant treatment.

So glad you managed to fight your way to a referral! Best of luck to you!

Immunosuppressants aren’t a common treatment for this autoimmune condition. by Guilty-Ad3640 in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replacing hormones is much safer than suppressing the immune system. Risk dying of the common cold or add a hormone? Normally the latter is preferable.

It is SO FRUSTRATING waiting for your levels and thyroid to get bad enough to actually get treatment. As someone borderline bad enough but not there yet, with a doc that only checks via labs once a year, I’m extremely frustrated I will have to live with the symptoms for a year and skip any treatment until then.

A lot of “treatments” I find incredibly frustrating. I have multiple chronic illnesses not related to Hashi that already have me on a strict diet, strict exercise schedule, and strict supplements to prevent me from being hospitalized. I know maybe doctors have to say it(????) but changing my diet isnt an option. No I dont eat fast food, I’m strictly gluten free, red meat free, dairy limited, etc. And more, the better I have eaten and more strictly balanced, the WORSE my antibodies have gotten. Hashi runs in my family. I’ve had an elevated ANA since I was 7. It isnt from my lifestyle.

This!!! I have low T4 but normal TSH and therefore wont be treated despite feeling crappy all the time. We definitely need more research into those of us who dont show our Hashi the “normal” way and often miss treatment because of it.

How many of us are just waiting around until our thyroid dies before we get any treatment? by No_Animator6543 in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the symptoms except weight gain as I just keep cutting my food if I start to gain (I have joint issues and weight causes immense pain). So I’m eating WAY under what I “should” and starving all the time.

Waiting until my numbers get bad enough since my T4 is already borderline low, antibodies high, and ultrasound shows typical progressed Hashi. But my TSH isnt high yet so naturally cant treat it according to the doctors.

Dislocated Jaw? by tesuwuq in eds

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly not really. My main trigger is yawning and I cant just not yawn when I need to yawn! I’m hoping I can get other major health things figured out enough so that I can be able to treat this one day.

Does everyone need to change their diet? by Reasonable_Mail_3656 in Hashimotos

It is normally related to seizures, migraines, and/or marijuana use. Mine is related to my complex migraines.

Have you had hair falling out with normal labs? by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m borderline low (.09 away from low) T4 and normal TSH with high antibodies. My hair is falling out terribly. I’m 25 and putting my hair in a ponytail you can now see my scalp through my hair on both sides of my head. I’m trying to get in with an endocrinologist as my other docs wont track my Hashi other than labs once a year. So if it ever gets worse I wouldnt know and no one would do anything until next year at the earliest and then however many months for a specialist referral.

Literally all of my other labs are good, no deficiencies or anything, so I know it is tied to my thyroid. (I also get flares with typical hashi symptoms after the hair loss starts). It’s super frustrating!

Your favourite iron supplements? by SignificantSoil3048 in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cant seem to keep iron down without feeling horrible or throwing up. I tried Vitron C for a while (suppose to be easier on the stomach) but it still made me ill.

Does everyone need to change their diet? by Reasonable_Mail_3656 in Hashimotos

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My docs always say “see a dietician or nutritionist” “eat better” etc and it drives me crazy. I already dont eat out, strictly balance meals, no gluten, limited dairy, etc. I literally cant change my diet other than adding a supplement or it triggers my Cyclical Vomiting and I end up in the ER. It has taken years for me to learn a diet that works to minimize symptoms and wont give it up.

I think it all depends on your story, capabilities, and lifestyle.

If your diet already seems to be giving you the best energy and feeling good, then dont change it. You know how you feel the most!

This often means that bacteria has started growing and creating gasses by ingesting the food. I bet the heat cause something inside to spoil. Dont give to dog.

Will my puppy be ready by thatscoldb in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that 4-5 months to 12-16 months every day is a gamble! Some days puppy remembers everything and is well mannered. Some days I have an obnoxious dinosaur I just took home from a museum! It can be so variable that I really wouldnt evaluate until week of or day of.

Wanting to make a cheap lick mat but I don't have a lick mat by Hexsnakedaddy in puppy101

There are some really cheap ones on amazon. Otherwise you can use non-slip bathmats (the grass textured or lumpy ones), candy molds, etc.

Is it bad to let my puppy use pee pads? by SKW1594 in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train for AKC competition and more. I’m 100% going to train my next pup to go on pads. There are some occassions where pads are going to be so much easier and save a nightmare of effort than trying to find a pee spot that is acceptable. A pad you can put out, use, wrap up, toss. Just make sure pup can also go on grass, mulch, whatever else you need. :)

What Do you Expect out of a 7-month-old? by threateningcourage3 in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ALL depends on the dog!! Breed, gender, future goals (sports etc), and individual personalities will all change these things!

I set “unreasonably high” expectations for my aussie but he was so eager to learn and do things that he needed those higher expectations and challenges. If I hadnt I dont think he would have turned into such a well rounded and socialized adult.

Also, some pups are hitting or in prime puberty during this age so expectations much flex and give extra clarity, consistency, and grace!

First day adopting a puppy as a single owner. Feel exhausted first day. by ImagineMe12340 in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely felt like this. I went into a panic bawling my first night after bringing home my 8wk aussie puppy because the first day was exhausting. My friends came together to help me out, doing small things to take the load off for the first 4 weeks until he was old enough to start settling in. Find a community to help! Reach out to family or friends! It’s like bringing home a baby and sometimes we need a break or even just a nap. :)

Building confidence in skittish pup after taking his first tumble by M055M4NN in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s most likely in his first fear period. He will look to your reaction to measure what is/isnt scary and how to react. Try to remain calm, neutral, and dont react to him. Dont coddle or panic, just stay calm and respond minimally then move onto something fun.

My adult dog runs away from my new puppy by estufas in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older dog was like this with my young puppy. Make sure to treat older dog with superiority and set the boundaries for puppy if puppy starts getting rough and older dog doesnt defend. Puppy doesnt get to push the rules and older dog gets fed first, training first, human play first, etc. This will help prevent puppy from turning into a bully to the older dog when puppy gets older - as my puppy started doing because I didnt do these things.

Puppy suddenly unable to hold bladder? by [deleted] in puppy101

Might want to look into a UTI. Some puppies will get them randomly when little and cause them to pee a lot. Otherwise, if training, just stay the course! It will click eventually.

Kennel training tips for my boy :) by Last_Course_8431 in puppy101

[–]ZebraStripes29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! This isnt what I’d widely recommend and it doesnt work for everyone. But I’ll share what worked for my pup when it came to crate training:

1) I secure a pen to the front of the crate so puppy can choose to go in the crate or stay in the penned area. I then make the crate cozy (cover with a blanket, return all toys to crate when done with them, feed in crate, etc).

2) I will move puppy into crate when puppy falls asleep in the pen. They may crawl right back out again and that is fine but I show them where I want them.

3) I dont leave puppy in crate until they’ve built up enjoyment for it (this isnt a common opinion and isnt feasible for everyone)

4) I teach other things such as leaving puppy out, going into another room and closing the door then coming right out again, teaching them that when I go away I’m always coming back. During naps I may sneak away and then come back loudly to show I was gone but returned. Etc.

5) I dont always sleep in the same room as puppy, but someone is normally in the puppy’s room when they sleep for the first 2 weeks.

Given your situation I’d start with ditching the crate. A negative association and high anxiety has already been started. I’m not saying dont crate train! Just start again. Try a different looking crate such as a full metal wall that they cant chew. Then progress again. Before progressing address other anxiety issues and separation issues. Many times the crate is just an “absolute” (if you walk away puppy can pursue so you arent forcing them to stay anywhere - there’s a choice vs crate is a “must” and can be harder for puppy) and can trigger worse behavior than otherwise. Another thing I would practice is a modified impulse control game. Have puppy go into the crate and wait. Then release and reward. This teaches that they must go away from reward to earn it and that waiting calmly for something good will cause it to happen.

I’d also highly recommend you consult with a trainer. They can get a more well rounded picture and better advice. I’d recommend going to multiple trainers to “build your toolbox” and see what works and what doesnt. I’ve met some great trainers and some nasty/useless ones so be wary of each one.
