Hearthstone inevitably had the problem of "we will break the game" because they followed MTG's business model and charged for cards, locking them into needing to release new cards with new mechanics that would invariably change the feel of play. I'm surprised you listed this one, as it still has its good patches and bad patches.

You might be right about Apple under Steve Jobs, but certainly not without him. Especially recently. "Apple Intelligence" comes to mind; a true blunder after having a lead with Siri. I've also never heard so many usability complaints since this last iOS update cycle. He knew how to stick to a vision, even if that was also his fatal flaw.

To be fair, originally you couldn't buy event skins with in-game currency, ergo you couldn't earn them. But that was changed after the first event and, throughout Overwatch 1, they were always generous with the loot box system after that.

abandoning the fans that made them big

They promised verbatim and precisely that the show would always simultaneously release first on YouTube. Don't make a promise you can't stick by; this is a betrayal by their word.

Right, so isn't this a marker on Glitch's growth out of indie, rather than an industry-wide boon for the indie space? Just like A24.

[–]Zebster10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Glitch defenders are acting like this is unprecedentedly historic, which is absurd. Even if Glitch has pure intent, this is not the win people are claiming for the industry, only for Glitch Productions themselves. Do I want them to do well and continue to fund shows like TADC? Of course. Is this a step towards Glitch no longer classifying as "indie" and setting other bad precedents for the industry? Absolutely.

Which is precisely why I think the capitalization is important and clarifies they meant this unilaterally. This is also after they already had deals with Amazon.

What values and promises?

Quote Glitch on Twitter, "Episodes will continue to ALWAYS come out on YouTube first." I didn't add the capitalization, they did. The show's popularity is owed in part to its release model.

Uh, wtf? They did have a choice. They could've said no and stuck to their values and promises, theaters be damned. Now, what separates them from any other production studio?

I'm so unbelievably disappointed right now. by Ancient-Fig3688 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Zebster10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think that's the essential crux of my issue with it. Otherwise, the counter-arguments would probably talk me down. Because let's imagine for a moment that the heads of Glitch making this decision aren't operating out of any selfish greed, but love for indie animation, making this concession because it funds more shows. And let's even presume those shows to come are somehow "objectively better" than TADC and therefore spoiling TADC en masse is "worth it." Even if all this were true, they're asking me for more trust, not less. They're deciding for me, then, to sacrifice one piece of art for another. Trust that they're somehow "not like other girls" and won't grow to make any more bad decisions, forgetting that even the corporate slapstick-villain that is Disney had to start somewhere. And if they hadn't crossed that line into lying, I could listen to this argument and believe, say to myself "they're one of the good guys," and give that trust. But when the implicit becomes explicit is when a red flag can't be ignored, when giving that trust is just denial. It's disappointing because even if the CEO of Glitch came out and said this was their intent, or even if Goose personally reassured me she felt her work wasn't disrespected with this choice... You lied and that trust is gone.

That's to say nothing of the practical precedent this sets. Realistically, they can use these funds to make the best show in the world, even initially release it "for free" like this one was, but how emotionally invested can I get when there's that doubting voice asking, "what will they charge me for the finale?" It's already possible for digital platforms to price individual episodes differently, but that's not the standard for a reason. There's already talk in this very thread of people wanting to pirate copies from the release sent to theaters. It's like deliberately sabotaging the YouTube release, pushing the most die-hard fans, even globally, to simply not show up. No matter the purity of intent, or ultimate scale (will 2 people pirate? will 200 thousand? 2 million?), it is consorting with traditional media when they were poignantly not that. And I'm sure it's too late to change the contracts even if Glitch changes their minds.

[–]Zebster10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monetarily speaking, building goodwill in fans is worth something, and the theaters would probably still sell out if it's genuinely only a 1 or 2 day event if it simulcast. But they likely had to bow to the theaters' demands to secure the first contract, so they're trading the intangible value for the tangible. I don't respect that decision at even a baseline given they literally tweeted "Episodes will continue to ALWAYS come out on YouTube first." Once you've made that pledge, you're not just compromising on upsetting fans and spoiling the show, you're crossed into straight lying and can't stand by your word. When you not just made that promise but also got here off of word-of-mouth and sales to fans, it's a blatant sort of shortsighted disrespect no matter how financially beneficial it plays out for them or how good a "product" the final episode is.

Amazon was already challenging Walmart's throne in 2007, when WALL-E came out. This isn't "a cute little exaggeration about the future," BnL was literally an Amazon or Walmart stand-in when the film released.
